Changing thread titles

I still remember when we couldn't even edit the first post in a thread.

But now it seems that we can change the title of a thread as often as we wish!  Which would be fine if the original thread title has a terrible typo or whatever, but it's not so cool when threads with posts and responses are suddenly "about" something new.

Meg, is this a "switch" that the tech staff could flip?  Can we keep existing threads intact, original topic included?

Ken Burch

I'm now wishing the tech staff would change the title of this thread...just because...

Mr. Magoo

Hehe.  Well, the tech staff always could, and have generally used some discretion the rare times they chose to.

My point is that now, having started this thread, I can do it myself, anytime.

If enough people reply with "yes, I agree", I could go ahead and change the thread title to "Do you agree that we need Scheer for our next Prime Minister??"

The title to the Rachel Notley "eastern bastards" thread has now had the word "joking" added to it, which kind of renders less coherent the debate between several posters about whether or not anyone was misled by the original thread title.

I never would have guessed there could be a "less coherent" version of that debate - live and learn!

I wish NR had included the word 'joking' in the Notley eastern bastard thread in the first place.

I wouldn't have lost my shit.

The title of this thread should now be changed to "Was Rachel Notley Joking When She Said The Eastern Bastards Should Make Scheer Prime Minister?".

I think thread titles should be changed sparingly. This is how people come to find conversations and once in a while there may be good reason to change a title but if you are looking for something this has a cost. Usually the kinds of changes that are needed are small enough that the thread is recognizable and people should try to make it still obvious and minimize the number of times they do it.

Mr. Magoo

I agree.  An embarrassing typo -- like "Vulcanoes" instead of "Volcanoes" -- should be fixed.  But a whole new thread title for no apparent reason, after people have replied in good faith to a different thread?  I feel like we don't need that.  It's super that we can edit an opening post now, but I think that notwithstanding a typo or similar, thread titles should remain intact.  It shouldn't be that hard to choose a thread title and stick with it.
