CBC: Freeland Rejects Trump's Nationalist Policies, Says Canada Will Step Up To Lead On World Stage

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/freeland-foreign-policy-speech-1.4147672

"...Speaking to reporters later, Freeland said the only foreign minister she briefed ahead of the speech was US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whom she spoke to Monday. Freeland's speech comes the day before Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan is set to release a comprehensive roadmap for Canada's military..."

Sounds expensive. Good comments

Chrystia Freeland Once Counted NDP Among Her Fans

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/11/18/chrystia-freeland-ndp-liberals_n...

"New Democrats were big fans of Chrystia Freeland before she became the Grit candidate."

No surprise here. Perhaps it helps explain the silence of the NDP. Although this is also No Difference Party standard operating procedure with something as controversial as the Freeland/Sajjan hustle - wait and see what the reaction is, then carefully craft a position which can be interpreted as much as possible as being all things to all people. I predict we shall shortly see a standard run-with-hare-but-hunt-with-hounds ndp response. And aside from the usual suspects, Canadian 'progressives' are probably waiting to see what everybody else thinks first.

Geoff

To me the short story is that Trump demanded that the Canadian government spend more money on the military, so Trudeau/Freeland are doing as they were told.  They are taking their orders from Washington, even as they dress it up in tough talk about how we can't rely on the Americans to defend us.

Freeland is the one-time critic of the plutocrats who has devolved into their humble servant. Her book, "Plutocrats", turns out to be nonsense, given her political re-positioning, post-election. I'm not sure now that she believed what she was saying when she wrote it, and let's face it, the analysis in the book is far from radical, anyway.

As a New Democrat, myself, I can't imagine anyone of any progressive persuasion who might support Freeland and her neo-Liberal world view. People like Freeland are the reason I'm a member of the NDP, whatever its shortcomings.

Canada Follows Orders: Russia Reacts  -  by Christopher Black

It seems to me that Trudeau and team replaced S. Dion by C. Freeland because she is an anti-Russia hawk like her grandfather, a pro-German Ukrainian, welcomed to Canada after WWII.

It is sickening to see how Canada, with its own "Donbass" (minority-language Quebec) is militarily helping the Ukrainian government crush the separatist Russian-speaking provinces next to Russia, which could easily annex them if it wanted.

Freeland Says She Had 'Long Conversation' With Vladimir Putin at APEC Last Fall

Regarding Russia's demand for evidence, and the West's failure to supply any, here's an interesting tidbit:

The fact that Novichok, an organophosphate compound, can be created from common, unrestricted and undetectable industrial and agricultural chemicals available worldwide may come as a surprise to many."

The drive is on for Siberia. Economically, Russia is very weak. Its GDP is about 3% of that of NATO's, and it no longer has any buffer states to prevent invasion. The USA alone spends about 80% of the total value of Russia's economy on defence. NATO combined exceeds the total Russian GDP. Year after year, 20% or so of that goes on equipment. Russia has one aircraft carrier, which has to be followed by a tugboat. America has 10. America uses the British Navy policy of having more than your top three competitors combined, for if two of them ally against you, you should still be all right. Also, America always expands westwards.

Siberia is one of the world's last undeveloped areas. Russia does not have the capital to develop it or defend it. Once Russia is reduced to a (still very large) European rump, NATO will be able to build a land bridge across the Bering Strait. In this way, military equipment will be able to move quickly all around the world, while facilitating trade with India, China and Japan. The land could be set up into client states run by "national liberation movements" conveniently installed by the Pentagon.

NATO smells blood here. Russia's GDP/capita is only 7% more than China's. And China will be blowing past that one sometime soon. A direct land link to North America from the Silk Road would be of great interest to China.

Since the Manhattan

Project, the world has experienced 1,000 atomic and nuclear bombs, including the 50 MT Tsarbomba exploded by the Russians, at about 1,400 times the strength of Hiroshima.

As to the ghouls who plan geostrategy, they are going to be willing to sacrifice a few cities for all that land in Siberia.

Many Russian people are sick, starving, and alcoholic. Many would ask what they are fighting for, as their state has no power to ameliorate their miserable conditions. It is not even as if there is any kind of significant capitalist economy to expropriate. There is just no wealth there at all.
This time, they would be facing attack from their east, their north, and their west. It is not like Napoleon or Hitler.

War is coming.

Gee, this is starting to make me all nostalgic for the old "Is NATO about to Invade Russia and Start WW3" thread.

Look on the bright side, Smith. If America always expands westwards, the Middle East doesn't need to worry about American imperialism for another two centuries or so. There's just so much of Asia to annex first!

Freeland has no problem with the ever-expanding mandate of her department acting as a global weapons broker, especially to the US. Indeed the behaviour of her department mirrors changes to definitions that are militarizing the concept of international aid. She has yet to utter a word about the illegal concentration camp at Guantanamo Bay, falls silent when it comes to the no-fly list preventing Canadians from getting on planes, and certainly has no issue with negotiating secret trade agreements that will benefit corporate interests and further repress rights at home and abroad..."

The amazing amount of money thrown away includes a top-heavy bureaucracy, with the number of admirals and generals having grown 60 per cent since 2003 (despite the military itself only growing an estimated two per cent during that time period). Current War Department Chief Jonathan Vance is unashamed abut the number of men strutting about Ottawa with the massive fruit salad on their chests, and he actually plans to expand their numbers even more, especially since Ottawa will invest well over $1 billion in a new facility for the War Department to accompany an $800-million building in the former Nortel campus in the city's west end.   "
