CBC suggests pipeline opposition are Kremlin dupes

I just knew the Kinder Morgan protests were another Putin Plot! (Thank heavens CBC let us know.)

Actually what it says is that trolling efforts exploit points of division, and that is true, as in this case where trolls organized two demonstrations protesting against each other:

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/3kvvz3/russian-facebook-troll...

This tactic has been used by propagandists from all imperialist nations.  What better way to undermine your opponent than by piggybacking on legitimate causes like education, or fighting religious oppression. Another big one was using the disarmament movement. It doesn't mean all who support disarmament are dupes, and in fact the article does not say anything like that in this case.

I also don't think all racists, gun supporters and anti-immigrant xenophobes are Kremlin dupes either, even though they have exploited them too.

So, yet another cautionary tale of 'bots', 'hackers' and Russian ill intentions. This time we are warned 'The Russians' have supposedly infiltrated and drawn a bead at a critical popular and Indigenous struggle to halt ecocide and land rights violations resulting from the construction of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Ottawa, NDP Alberta and BIG PETRO  badly want this black snake built to take their  foul and greasy goods (bads!)  to tidewater and to market. The people who know better and there are many,  say no. And more power to them.

Should we be surprised then to see yet another scary Russia story from CBC - this time 'piggy-backing' against a protest movement that threatens to defeat Kinder Morgan's plans? Should we be surprised to find it somewhat greasy? Should we be surprised to find it coming from Edmonton's  Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, aka 'Oil U',  catering as it does to its 'industry partners' in the oil and pipeline industry? I think not.

I smell dead fish, dilbit and bullshit quite distinctly...

Except that Zabiuk isn't the source for the story. This is:

A House of Representatives committee review of thousands of accounts linked to a Russian troll factory found more than 9,000 posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram about pipelines and fracking, including an unspecified number about the Canada-U.S. Keystone XL pipeline.

So there is evidence that it is being done. All CBC did was ask him his opinion on how targetted trolling and hacking could influence discussion around the pipeline issue.

I read the story Smith, so aside from that little bit of Yanqui bullshit you liked and cited, it's almost all Zabiuk. Curiously, I had a little school-friend as a kid with the same name. Family was Ukrainian, from Lviv as I recall. I should check and see if it's the same guy...?

You know, if you'd dug a bit deeper on this the committee did make some flimsy claims about Russia funding the Sierra club and other "dupes". Funny that they got called out by The Guardian on that one. Isn't that rag supposed to be Imperialist stooges themselves?

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/mar/02/dakota-access-pipeli...

But as for the charges of trolling on the pipeline issue, that seems to have been verified by other sources like material provided by Twitter to another committee:

LOL!

This is funny shyt! A Russian troll?!?!?!

You got to be kidding me.

If all it takes is a fucking troll to derail Canada, we’re doomed! Actually we would have been doomed already

Time to cut funding to the cbc and use that money for things that actually help people.

NDPP

This is a low-rent, Canucklhead fizzle-version of the 'Russia funds Sierra Club' in the Guardian's limited hang-out referred to. It's meant to both reinforce the Russia red-peril redux project the chumps support  and link the 'Kremlin Dupes' smear  to the Kinder Morgan pipeline protesters.  The thread title is bang on and what is intended.

Perhaps CBC will soon show Tzeporah Berman photoshopped against a background of Red Square in a Ushanka hat, just like BBC did to Jeremy Corbyn recently. In any case, this story is dirty, weaponized and obvious. But the dirty tricks  BIG OIL, and the PTB are going to play against this pipeline protest have only just begun...

I personally think that the CBC in the last 5 to 10 years deseves the moniker IBC, Imperial Broadcasting Corporation. Every international story, especially ones like this one, have embedded layers of bias that slant the story to the extent that it is turned it into flat out propaganda.

Re CBC and Support for Kinder Morgan...I'm going all out this time to shut them down, eventually through Federal Court...It must be done! The brainwashing and passivity of Canadian minds is breathtaking, as I renew my work here, thanks to the likes of the CBC

Well if that's where we are going I'd suggest taking some notes on how Trump is dealing with their public broadcasting system. He's the trailblazer you are following here.

Yes, yes, I know the CBC is the favorite target here so who should criticize people when they are having fun?

It would be really awkward, of course, to suggest that people look up "russian canadian elections" on their browsers to see that in fact all news media are reporting these claims.

It would be even more awkward to point out that the job of the newsroom is to report the news and that people are making these allegations is part of that.

It would be really gauche here to call out those who demand that the CBC censor what many outlets are also reporting to only cover the news thay want to hear. (You have twitter for that.) It would be offensive to suggest that the way to get other opinions out there is to make news of your own rather than criticize the reporting of the news being generated by others.

It would of course be very awkward to point out that the CBC has covered this stroy a couple time -- first by caring a Canadian Press story they did not write and second by including the article here that is mostly a transcript of an interview and provides no interpretation of the comments at all -- just the facts that this was said.

I know, I know it would really rock the boat here to make the point censorship of the news to avoid what is an ongoing discussion is not compatible with democratic process.

Now, I am capable of forming my onw opinions based on my own critical thinking. I want to read what is being said by different sources. As flawed as the CBC may be to people here it has the widest range of reporting. The answer is to cover more not less. Any directive from the government or whomever the people here want to send marching order to the CBC about what it cannot cover woudl be a descent into a place, I think most Canadians would not want our government to go.

This story that you are getting all lathered up about is simply transmitting the opinion of an expert at one of the country's respected institutions.

But we can see the source of the anger: the argument that an opinion that you might like is being used to amplify wider opinion. Okay, uncomfortable, but it is still relevant and it is still news. This is not a suggestion that the opposition is being initially generated by trolls but that it is being amplified and used.

Speak for yourselves of course. For my part, I am interested to kow when opinions I agree with are being potentially used to manipulate. I do not consider all my opinnions to be universal truths apparent to everyone and so I can understand how other interests could make use of opinions I may agree with as part of another purpose. I am not ashamed by that and I do not consider my opinion to be less properly founded. But of course you can return to your conspiracy theories just after you consider that the government providing a direction to the CBC to cover or not cover issues like this would be a mark of fascism.

If nobody elese is willing to say it, I am. I want to criticise all government interference in the media and to criticise corporatist bias. I personally do not want to be a hypocrite by objecting to legitimate neews stories that I do not like. Nor do I want to pretend that certain opinions from sources like this are not news as well.

Carry on with the vendetta against the CBC and the related conspiracies -- you might even be successful as a future Conservative government could shut it down and make way for a more Fox-news like replacement that you will get greater jollies from attacking.

I agree that it's pretty over-the-top for progressives to be calling for the judicial shutdown of the CBC.

That said, I'd like to see this professor's evidence for Russian-trolls influencing the pipeline debates. A while back, someone released memes from the American election that were suspected of originating with Russian bots. It wasn't quite possible to tell where exactly they originated, but some of them did indeed seem pretty dodgy(bad grammar etc). So I'm wondering if it's possible to produce similar evidence for this pipeline trolling.

NorthReport

No one is calling for the CBC to be shut down - just the biased, in favour of the Liberals, News Department.  Apart from the News Department, CBC is a great media outlet.

Sorry, I guess lyraste meant he wanted to shut down Kinder Morgan via the Federal Court. Rest of my post still stands.

Okay there we can agree. I think that the quality of journalism is not where it should be and would rather media outlets covered fewer stories each and did them better. I agree the evidence he is basing this on should be clearer. Part of the problem is the desire for really short articles. I do prefer a better argued and sourced set of points. Policies around the depth of articles and sourcing are good ones to lead with. That is very different from policies regarding what stories to cover -- I do not want legislators getting into that.
