If the survival of progressive media in Canada is in doubt, shouldn't progressives  like....support them? For-profit media makes profit by providing a service that supporters actually support....with money.

Media money comes primarily from commercial advertizing.    The problem is that for-profit media corporations are naturally more likely to support politicians who cut corporate taxes.   If only progressive organizations could get it together and acquire a mainstream media organization, this would help to combat the deficit of progressive media and even centrist media in Canada.  Certainly, there is a great deal of successful progressive entertainers who can provide high quality content.

Similarly, non-profits could also provide a service that supporters actually support....with money.

Non-profits aren't forbidden from generating revenue, but it must be used for cost recovery, not for paying shareholders or buying "the owner" a new cottage.

If anything, a non-profit should have an advantage over a for-profit in that they don't have to worry about making anyone rich.  How can their cost of doing business not be less?

As for supporting media with money, the majority of the all important 18-49 demographic has been consistently progressive/moderate in Canada , and less likely to vote Con.

SocialJustice101

Btw, the Con-appointed CBC CEO is out.  Catherine Tait is in.   Let's hope CBC deversifies their editorial panel.  Right now it's mostly Con transplants from Postmedia.

Apparently, all Canadians have two jobs, their own and running the CBC.

Social Justice non-profits absolutely can and do own media. they can also make a profit doing so. it's called social enterprise.

MartinF BS on the for profit media all the way around.

how many times have taxpayers paid bailouts?

they also are not providing a service supporters support with money. corporations buy advertising space not the watchers of tv. watchers of tv purchase cable access and watch whatever they want. they purchase nothing from the tv stations.

quizzical, I've read that ownership of the Toronto Star was supposed to be transferred to a non-profit upon the owner's death, but this was disallowed due to a law passed by an Ontario Conservative government.

Is this what you're thinking of?

Quote:
Atkinson's will had directed that profits from the paper's operations were "for the promotion and maintenance of social, scientific and economic reforms which are charitable in nature, for the benefit of the people of the province of Ontario" and it stipulated that the paper could be sold only to people who shared his social views.  The five trustees of the charitable organization circumvented the Act by buying the paper themselves and swearing before the Supreme Court of Ontario to continue what became known as the "Atkinson Principles"

SocialJustice101

Exactly.   I didn't check if the Conservative law is still on the books, but I was stating that it shouln't be on the books, in any province.   Media companies run by charities should balance out the corporate media and their greed.

Mr. Magoo

Well, IANAL, but it seems like the law simply prohibits charities from using donations to directly speculate in the market.  I'm not sure that's a bad law.

And I'm not specifically against the market, and I'm certainly not against a charity turning $10 into $20.  But I can see where it might be a bad thing if charities have to tell donors that the beans weren't magic beans after all.  Is that really only a "conservative" thing?
