A Bath a Week: One Look at Privately Run Seniors Care

As private care expands in BC, staff and residents say low wages have led to decreased quality of life at one Parksville seniors residence.

Gee a reporter for the mainstream press supports private health care clinics so the rich can go to the front of the line.

Who knew!

Hopefully Canadians are not as stupid and short-sighted as our mainstream, represent only the rich, press.

Adrian, shut 'em all down!

Private clinics are the necessary but unwanted foster child of health care

How long is the line?  Canadians are totally used to the idea that some things have a line.  But at the grocery store, it's seldom longer than five minutes.

If our beloved health care system is producing lines that stretch into HOURS then either we should be funding them better, or they should step back if someone else -- anyone else -- can meet the need.  If the local Fire Department could only respond to your house fire in three hours, would you argue against a parallel system that could be there in 15 minutes?  Wouldn't you argue that the public FD needs to step up, rather than that the private firefighters are destroying our totally sufficient public system?

Martin N.

Oh, yes. Much better for everyone to have equal access to lack of healthcare. Access to a waiting list is not access to healthcare. Are you really dumb enough to think that "the rich" wait in line with the "great unwashed" rather than swan off to the US or the medical tourism destinations in Mexico or India?

At the least, allowing a two tier system like in Europe will provide doctors with incentive beyond the operating room restrictions placed upon them by funding starved hospitals. Healthcare is 'free' but it is also severely rationed by budgetary limitations.

The lineup may be hours for emergency treatment but in BC, surgery lineups are measured in years if not immediately life-threatening. All the cancer surgeries go to the head of the line and the merely painful or uncomfortable collect dust until some booking clerk ventures into the unknown.

Reducing wait times - just what the doctor ordered.

Keep on fining and shutting down these private, for the one percenters, health care clinics.

Looking good Adrian!

Adrian Dix, one of the leading lights in B.C. NDP Premier John Horgan’s Cabinet

Just look at all the progressive things that are being done in BC and with a minority government

How can that be!

It is always the same whether it is the attempt to privatize Medicare or charge exorbitant cell phone charges. Just another in a long line of constant attacks by the rich on the poor. The class system is alive and well in Canada so you had better know what side of the fence you are on, eh!

Increased privatization not the answer

Dix's 'toughest' decision sets back wait-list progress by years

Before this year, one might have guessed it was the judgement calls he made as leader of the NDP that cost him a lead in the opinion polls and victory in the 2013 provincial election.

But to his credit, he overcame what must have been devastating in personal terms, and toughed it out, much like his predecessor as leader, Carole James.

Now, like James, he finds himself in a key position under a premier who does not hesitate to delegate huge responsibilities to able ministers.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man, as they say.

Dix, with his command of detail, formidable work ethic and patience in answering the same question again and again is ideally positioned to handle the daily news media grind on the pandemic response.

More important, he was willing to make the call to cancel all those surgeries, even if it meant undoing his own efforts to reduce waiting lists over the past two and a half years.

BC Investigates Racist ‘Games’ in ER Rooms, Damage to Indigenous Patients

Staff tried to guess blood alcohol levels in patients and compromised care, allegations say.

Honestly, I was truly shocked by the news about the racist actions in ER rooms in BC. The San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program is one of many best practices that have come out of the province to deal with health inequities faced by Indigenous people. Absolutely depressing. It reminded me of how horrible the racist attitudes were (and hopefully have been somewhat rectified) in Winnipeg hospitals with the inquiry into Brian Sinclair's death in Health Sciences Centre ER a few years ago. Here is a link to the original story:

Thanks Laine

The Brian Sinclair case is appalling. It's bad enough to have to go to a hospital in the first place, but to have that compounded by racism must be overwhelming.

Thank goodness the investigator, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, appointed by the BC NDP Government, comes with top notch credentials
