Henry Morgenater

Hey, is it just me, or is Henry Morgentaler a creepy little scumbag? You know what would be ironic? If his mother had had an abortion. That would be funny. I think I will write a screen play about that. I think he has a hidden agenda, don't you? It wasn't enough to make abortion legal in Canada, it had to be on demand. Maybe he has a mental problem. Maybe his experiences in the concentration camps screwed him up. You would think that someone who went through that would have more respect for life, unless they went psycho as a result. Someone should look into that. BTW, I think he should give back his Order of Canada. Kind of like giving on to Clifford Olsen, don't you think?

Unionist

What a ridiculous post. Clifford Olsen never got the Order of Canada.

Unionist

Which post are you talking about, Caissa? Undecided

George Victor

Holding such thoughts, I'll bet this hydra makes the Greek original look like  a  Mona Lisa.

Caissa

We cross posted. I thought Henry Morgan performed well on MASH.Tongue out

George Victor

That one on My Darling Clementine was this old cowboy's favourite.

Unionist

Who is Henry Morgenater anyways (see thread title)?

the hydra

Well, he's sort of like the Terminator, except he's the Morgenator.

jas

Probably an intentional play on Terminator.

He is. The. Morg-en-a-ter.

Caissa

I really should watch some of my MASH videos this weekend especially if Henry Morgan is in them.

the hydra

Henry Blake was way better than Sherman Potter. MASH went down hill after Mclean Stevenson and Wayne Rogers (Trapper John) left. The final nail in the coffin was when Radar left.

Caissa

I'll take Potter over Blake any day. Alan Alda was the glue that held things together.

ohara

Sorry folks, but Charles Winchester 111 was by far the most unique character on MASH

al-Qa'bong

He couldn't have been that unique, if there were 110 Charles Winchesters before him.

Caissa

"most unique" is one of those grammatical conundrums. Something is either unique or not unique.

Merowe

er, re: opening post: its just you.

the hydra

Naaaaa, there has to be someone else out there who thinks he's a creepy little scumbag. Maybe I'm just ahead of my time.

Caissa

I wonder how much time The Hydra has left...

"Hydra"? Sounds like more than a head of your time.

Are you kidding? He sucked. He was like Rebecca Howe on Cheers. Didn't add anything at all to the show.

Well maybe we burned up all the moderating time, with the labour debate. Or then maybe my prediction is coming true? ;)

Unionist

I once said that no predictions would ever come true. Turned out I was right.

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

and therefore you were wrong.

Right!

No, it's just you that's the creepy little scumbag.

(sorry, folks, that was a bit too easy, wasn't it?)

Unionist

Well, sometimes it's really hard to come up with the really easy ones.

remind remind's picture

Well that is a comment and a half, now isn't it? ;)

the hydra

Hey, I resemble that accusation!

Everyone seems really disappointed that I haven't been banned. Hey, I'm just a fun loving communist like all of you. So I have opinions that might be different than the rest of you, but does that mean I shouldn't have a voice? I'm neutral on the abortion issue, but I still think Morgentaler is a creepy little scumbag. If he was the head of NASA I would still think he was a creepy little scumbag.

Unionist

Hey Michelle:

Hydra followed me home, and he's really cute.

Can I keep him? PLEEEEEEEEEEZE!?

Maysie Maysie's picture

No. So there.

Jingles

CEWIII had the advantage of being more intelligent than his antagonists, and therefore often got the better of them. Frank Burns was awesome, but Charles was a far more interesting and multifaceted character. Frank became more and more cartoonish toward the end. Maybe that's why Larry Linville left the show.

Hawkeye became less and less interesting and more and more a condescending, moralizing bore. Ditto Margaret, who became too tame. She could have stepped into her own more once Frank was gone.

It's funny that this thread comes up on a day when we all will lose an extra hour.

But I can see the value in allowing this little piece of entertainment to last a few days--

George Victor

More of the Marx routine from Mash please (and I don't mean Karl).

oldgoat

I just want to point out that this poindexter first posted at 10:30, and nothing showed up in the mods mailbox until 4:00.  I was on the computer off and on through the middle of the day, and would have picked it up quite quickly.  Now ya'd think a thread title like that would have jumped out at me, but it's a busy board, and it didn't.

However, back to the topic at hand.  The oldgoat family owns every MASH episode on tape/DVD, plus the movie of course.  Back in 2002, when my kids were about 10 and 14 respectively, we got into the routine of watching the series over dinner, in order, from the beginning, and talking about the shows, the actors, and the social issues they were about.  I  think we finished in 2007.

That opening helicopter sequence, and the music makes me feel very familyish.

Sineed

What do you think of the movie compared with the series?  Don't get me wrong - I was a huge fan of the series, but it almost made war look fun, what with all the comraderie between the cast, the pranking, and so forth.  The movie was much darker and nastier.

My parents got to see the movie in Washington DC, in a theatre filled with servicemen in the early 70s - Viet Nam was still on.  There's where Frank Burns says something like, "How did idiots like this get into the United States Army," and someone says, "They were drafted."  Mom says that line brought down the house.

oldgoat

sorry for the delayed response Sineed.  I think the movie and the series are sort of comparing apples and oranges.  Yeah, the series started out pretty glib, but I think as years went by, and the cast got more creative control, it got a lot less "war is fun".  I'd say the final two hour episode was a lot darker than the movie.

By the time they got rid of the laugh track, and moved Henry and Frank Burns on, the show was getting pretty serious.  Even the humour was very bitter-sweet and dark.

Actually, killing off Henry the way they did took the giggles out of the Korean war.  Did you know that had been kept from the cast? The last sequence of that show where Henry's death was announced was done cold after the rest of the show had been shot.  They assembled for the scene, gave Radar his lines with about a minute notice, and he made the announcement, just telling everyone to react natually according to character.

Unionist

*bump*

We used to have so much fun with trolls. <Feeling nostalgic.>

So it's got nothing to do with his advocacy of reproductive choice?  You just have it in for the guy on a totally irrational personal level?

lagatta4

At least that was funny.

6079_Smith_W

A timely reminder. I thought the whole rationale back in the day regarding policy was that we shouldn't have to spend all our time doing 101.

Hey, if I could just sic rats on people at least it would be fun to watch.

(edit)

No more productive, but at least fun to watch.

Well, going by your moniker, you wouldn't be the one manning the cage.

If someone had just caged the Manning, Alberta might look different today.

... rather than just looking after the rats.
