Andrea Horwath - Justin Trudeau Failed To Protect Canada's Steel & Aluminum Industry From Trump Tariffs

Whatever Kathleen Wynne and Justin Trudeau have been doing isn’t working – and the consequences are unthinkable.

If I am elected premier, I’ll be meeting with Canadian and American officials immediately to do everything I can to secure an exemption to these punitive, devastating tariffs.

Do you agree with Andrea that Justin Trudeau failed?

Because Thomas Muclair would have done so much better, after calling Trump a Nazi.    (I'm not saying Trump isn't a Nazi, but that's not exactly the language that's used during successful trade deals.)

Other than giving personal loans to Trump what does work. I think the rest of the world has resigned itself to a period of hardship until reason prevails.

Pondering

This is a misstep on her part. I hope it doesn't hurt her.

No I don't agree.

Trump wanted Canada to get rid of its agricultural price supports, and Trudeau retaliated for the tarrifs.  So, it's kind of hard to criticize him.

She may be mistaken in her opinion, but politically I don't see a downside.  Nervous steel and autoworkers might be attracted to her promise, realistic or not.

Actually I think that this can hurt her. She has to be able to back it up with solid facts or this can hurt her credibility. With one week left to go in the election I think this is a bad decision on her part

Pondering

I agree with Misfit. When it was being said she lost the debate I felt she had won it. She came across as authentic. That is what people are looking for. It is in part what got Rob Ford elected. People are fed up with slick politicians. Doug came across like a used car salesman.

She needs the votes of Trudeau supporters. That is her largest voting pool by far. People want whomever wins to work with Trudeau. She isn't running against him. Blaming Trudeau for Trump comes across as playing politics.

There is a good chance it won't hurt her because Wynne is so far behind but it isn't going to help her. She's coming across as fake as any other politician. Not a good look.

And I agree with Pondering

Kathleen Wynne just took a shot at Andrea Horwath calling her tweet "inadequate" (her word). Esentially saying why not offer a suggestion or idea to improve the situation, instead of blaming Justin Trudeau?

If you're a farmer from Quebec

What do you mean a farmer from Quebec? There's dairy farmers from coast to coast who are all affected. The milk you buy in Toronto comes from Ontario dairy farms.

But mostly Quebec.

Nothing Trudeau could've said (apart from complete surrender on the supply management system) could've prevented the tariffs so he might as well have said the truth, rather than spending a year being a supplicant for Trump.

He bought years of  the status quo for businesses also buying them time to brace for the shock. This could be so damaging to the US economy that Trump will either backdown or lose massive amounts of support. Hitting people in the wallet has a way of transcending ideology sometimes. This could be one of those times.

Trump's "economic advisor" Larry Kudrow said yesterday that Trump will now negotiate separately with Canada and Mexico because, as Kudrow so insightfully puts it, "Canada and Mexico are different countries." Brilliant.

Trump is generally stupid -- but bullies normally want to do one victim at a time. He picked too many fights at once and wantes to do them serially now. This is more classic bullying than his fight-with-the-whole-world-at-once-thing. Shows he might be less of a really stupid bully and more of a schoolyard bully type.

Problem here is that it can be too late once you have picked the fights to be able to organize taking people out to the woodshed one at a time.
