I think it's pretty far-fetched to say that Soviet republics separating from the USSR, Namibia separating from South Africa, and the USA's Pacific holdings gaining independence, provide a plausible template for an independence movement springing up in BC.
To take just one of those examples, Namibia was a black majority territory colonized by Germany and then handed over to white-majority South Africa after World War I, and ruled via racist violence for decades after. I'd say their sense of grievance was a little more substantial than just "We don't like this pipeline".
EDIT: Sorry, I meant to say "white-ruled" South Africa.
Not to mention that the Marshall Islands and Micronesia have the kind of "divorce with bedroom privileges" pseudo-independence people used to laugh at René Lévesque for suggesting. Their inhabitants get mail at American domestic postage rates, collect Social Security, serve in the US Armed Forces, get hurricane relief from FEMA, and have the vast majority of their governments administered by the State Department directly from Washington offices populated by people who seldom visit. If BC got that kind of "independence" from Canada, it'd have fewer rights to prevent pipelines than it currently has as a province.

I doubt if there are many separtists in BC. However the Liberals won 2 seats in the province in 2011 and Trudeau's lies won him a historic 17 seats in 2015. If the Liberals revert to their norm in the early part of this century to 5 0r 6 seats they will be doing good. They could well go back to getting 1 0r 2 seats like they have done in most elections since 1979.
