..i went from a 32 bit comp to a used 64 bit. when i boot up the new comp there is no display on my monitor which goes into a kind of wait mode. moving my mouse doesn't change this wait mode where it did on the old comp. can someone help me with this please?

When you boot, do you see the BIOS screen before the OS loads? If so, your monitor, cord and graphics card are in good working order and it's a "soft" problem.
Can you connect your graphics card and monitor with an old VGA (analog, blue ends) cable? Does your computer have an "onboard" graphics system on the motherboard, and if so, does that work (VGA or DMI?).
I had a similar problem recently when I was forced to buy a new monitor. My graphics card didn't want to send a signal that the monitor could use, evidently, so I was able to boot using the VGA connector on the motherboard, and from there I went and completely deleted all drivers associate with my graphics card. Then, by the grace of Gord, my graphics card reinstalled its drivers and my DVI worked.
But it's hard to troubleshoot graphics issues if they mean you can't see anything.
..no i see nothing. blank screen. the new come came with a vga adapter. could this be it? i will try this.

You can probably check that monitor with your laptop, if your laptop has a VGA/DVI out port. Hate to see you drop coin on new hardware if it's not the issue. What happens if you connect your monitor to the laptop? Does the monitor automatically scan inputs, or do you need to cycle through them (VGA - DVI - HDMI) with a button? What inputs does the monitor itself have?

eta: my laptop is 64 bit and running solydx linux. so the problem is windows?
..resolved the issue. seems i was plugging in the adaptor cable into the wrong slot. story of my life. :)

Years ago I had a second computer that I played around with mostly as a hobby, and at one point it picked up the habit of instantly rebooting if my foot so much as touched it. In the interest of complicating things, and in stubborn defiance of Occam's Razor, I assumed the issue was some kind of static electricity thing, or perhaps power main grounding, or something like that.
Then one day, for some reason, I noticed that the graphics card was wobbling in its slot like a loose tooth. Reseated the card, never again a problem.
FWIW, this is why tech support often asks what seem like insulting questions. "Is your modem ON? Are there lights on the front?", etc. More computers won't boot because the power bar switch got stepped on than because of some esoteric new virus. :)
