Right-wingers like Baldrey and Global News would make a much more constructive contribution to society if they would be more supportive of governments rather than trying to tear them down every chance they get. Ugh!

Well the provinces have forestry services to manage this stuff if only they would be allowed to do it but unfortunately the politicians in the vast majority of municipalities are in the back pocket of developers so it is the real estate industry who really run the show. Too bad for all of us!

You'd think the realtors would prefer to see non-burning forests and clear skies near the properties they are trying to sell.  Hard to imagine that these conditions could possibly be good for property values.

And why aren't 1000's of  trained BC emergency fire fighters  being used to fight these fires?

What do you mean by "trained BC emergency fire fighters"? If you mean that they passed the S100 course and have a pair of boots it is not enough to be deployed. You have to be organised into crews. This is usually done by fire fighting contractors. Each crew of five has to have a certified crew leader, a level 1 first aid attendant, a qualified power saw operator and a certified Wildfire danger tree assessor among them.

.

OK, then answer us THIS:  Given that they've known since last summer that a situation like this was likely to occur, why didn't they ORGANIZE crews during the firefighting courses and have those crews continue meet, say, once a month, to work on additional training and team-building?  Was there any good reason to NOT have done that?

quizzical

they have been training firefighters since spring.

they're deployed everywhere but still not enough.

military in town here already and our fires are small comparatively speaking. don't know if they're staying or moving along.

It is the same sort of thing as the rising water levels in the Southeast USA where’s realtors have done their best to suppress that news. The almighty dollars rules.

I think they underbudgeted for fire suppression in the BC budget but a wholesale change has to take place because if the fires don’t destroy you the smoke will.

British Columbia's Carbon Output Now Dwarfing Tar Sands

https://t.co/3Yel845YgT

"As all these voracious fires devour the BC forest and our carbon footprint begins to dwarf that of the Alberta tar sands, British Columbians need to consider their own significant culpability in contributing to global heating.

In all the national gnashing of teeth over the BC fire emergency I challenge anyone to show me any significant discussion on the direct culpability of Big Industrial logging to this ongoing climatic disaster."

Just wait until BC gets it’s LNG plants up and running, eh!

Seriously though I think you will find that selective logging is on the NDP agenda. Now getting the MacBlos to buy into that is another matter. Time for BC’s Minister of Forests to lower the hammer!

it all just pisses me off.

when in my 20s i was wildfire fighter and in 1999 BC forest service, at least here but think it was all across the northern region, put out strategies to stop what they knew was coming.

the government changed and it was all dropped including the BC forest industry en masse.

now we are seeing the results of Gordon Campbell's environmental award. whete the hell is ms Berman today?

the change to a community forest model has left no one in charge and released forestry companies, who now only do the milling or shipping, from having to manage fires and timber stands.

quizzical

sooooo....... Justin was in PG today for briefing on the situation.

his response: "protecting people's 'livelihood' is our concern" or close to it. words except livelihood could be a bit different.

redirect question about money. he says sharing of resources needs to be looked at.

what about people's homes and livestock and communities.

wth timber stands are primary i guess and the the pipeline pumping stations they're protecting.

Suppress the news?  How do they not KNOW the fires are covered, day after day, on every form of media-print, broadcast, and online? Do they truly not know that everybody in North America has already heard about this story, over and over again?

i think you're both right.

it's obvious developers control public structures in BC.

people have been freaking for years about clearing interface areas. but non-treed land in BC doesn't sell so good.
