What is it gonna take for the Liberals to change their leader?

Is Gerald Butts stepping down?

voice of the damned

I don't think it will have much impact, or at least not enough to justify switiching leaders.

Outside of Alberta, people who supported the pipeline, and were planning to vote for Trudeau, won't blame him for the present impasse, they'll blame the courts, if indeed they're thinking about it at all by the time of the next election.

And on the other side of the spectrum, I don't think opposing Kinder Morgan is a priority issue for many people outside of BC, even those who identify as environmentalists.

So that leaves BC and Alberta. If, by a combination of anti-pipeline sentiment in the former and pro-pipeline sentiment in the latter, the Liberals manage to lose every seat they currently have in both provinces, that's gonna be 21 seats. That still keeps them well in majority territory.

I think you'd need a couple of other "Kinder Morgan"-type issues in other parts of the country for the Liberals to really be menaced in 2016.

Maybe Rachel Notley will be available to lead the federal Liberals into the next election?

NorthReport

How quickly we forget, eh!

The Liberals were on the ropes a few short years ago and in their desperation they turned to the Trudeau name to resurrect them. As Canadians recoil seeing their two-faced prime minister promoting the idea that somehow the failed Trudeau pipeline is good both for First Nations and the environment which is obviously absurd, Canadians are also concerned about the prime minister’s lack of wisdom in putting virulent anti-Russian Chrystia Freeland in charge of the NAFTA talks with Trump who obviously is pro-Russian for his own personal reasons.

Maybe Trudeau should replace Freeland with Putin?

I wouldn't assume that the Canadian public is as preoccupied with certain issues as posters on a political message board are. For most MOTR Canadians, it's enough that Trudeau has an image that is the polar opposite of the low-brow Trump, and espouses policies(with various degrees of implementation) that seem contrary to what the Orange One promotes. They're not gonna walk into the voting booth thinking "Hmm, how does Freeland's opposition to Putin impact her negotiations with Washington, given Trump's relatively benign attitude toward the same individual?" That's just not how the average person thinks about issues.

Even gone international as well. Sounds like  a no good, very bad week for Trudeau

You mean the average person doesn't think that His Royal Highness the Oil King of Canada, is not destroying his realm?

You know, the latest spat we've been having is not Trudeau's fault or Freeland or the Liberal Party but a petty vindictive Orange prick who is still holding a grudge because Canada dared reply with retaliatory tariffs that the Orange prick who started by imposing them on us. What was this Hitler wanna be thinking Canada would do? Roll over on our backs and let him walk all over us? Were we supposed to kiss his Orange ass?

He is now trying to cripple us because we answered back on his tariffs,a trade war that motherfucker wanted.

And I agree with those who know that your average Canadian who's not a political junkie is going to sour on Trudeau for standing up for the country. Quite the opposite.Who knows? Orange Hitler's waged war against us might give the Liberals a push up in the polls. I think anyone with two braincells to scratch together know that Canada (and the world) is dealing with a psychotic vindictive man child and an out of control drunk on power madman.

Washington is to blame. Not Ottawa.

For NDP partisans. Trump hates Trudeau because hes everything he is not (intelligent, young, handsome, well read, educated) Trump is also a raging xenophobe. Think for a minute how this Orange fuckface would react to a PM who is a Sikh and wears a turban? So who's the answer? Scheer? He'd be eating Orange Hitler's butthole on command. Bernier? The same thing.

Canada's problem with the US is Washington's fault,Washington's choice.

As for the pipeline, your average Canadian doesn't care.

Right, the Liberal Toronto Star, Chantel Hebert, mainstream media's go to person for Ottawa politics, and columnist Thomas Walkom are no longer read by Canadians.

What will Trudeau do now?

So, you want to be prime minister some day, do you? How do you like the state of this reality show? In just over a year’s time, there’s a real chance Trudeau could hear Trump’s famous line from his own reality program: “You’re fired!”

Umm, how many people outside of Toronto read the Toronto Star, let alone a particular columnist in that newspaper?

I've been reading Walkom since he was writing for the Globe in the 80s, but the point it, I'M A POLITICAL JUNKIE. As, I suspect, are most of the people who post regularly on babble.

It's hard enough engaging the average person in a discussion about politics beyond the level of "Ah, they're all a buncha of crooks", never mind getting them to reflect upon what Thomas Walkom is writing out in Toronto. Do people in Toronto care what Paula Simons in the Edmonton Journal has to to say about Trans-Mountain?

gadar

Dont worry fellow Canadians we will have the leaderhsip worthy of pride after the next election, no more this fancy socks drama nonsense. Now only if we had a former salesman as the leader leading the NAFTA negotiations, we would have been somewhere. And a trained professional Lawyer sitting opposite the worthy leader. Dont worry Canada you will be in good hands, just endure this nonsense for another year or so.

Hahahaha!

Your link is about a STABBING.

Seriously.  Read your own link.  A STABBING.

Also, if your point is that complex social problems have simple, easy solutions if only our politicians had the courage to implement them, you're kind of working NorthReport's corner.  No need to trump your partner's ace.

Isn't this whole thread a throlling expedition? Is the title of this thread, "Do the Liberals need a new leader?" actually serious?!? I think it's just calculated spin to get a rise out of others.

There are 338 seats in Parliament. The Liberals currently have 183. A loss of 21 seats or even 14 would leave them without a majority.

You need 170 to have a majority, so heavy losses in BC and Alberta or Manitoba, where they have a recent historical high of seven MPs, without sufficient pickups elsewhere would cost the Liberals their majority. They may pickup seats in Quebec and possibly Ontario (they can't win more in the Maritimes as they already have all 32 there and could suffer some losses here also), but that is far from guaranteed as a week in politics is an eternity, especially in the modern world as we saw in the last campaign when all three parties led at some point.
