Axing Saudi Arms Deal Would Cost Canadians 1$bn Says Justin Trudeau

https://t.co/JvXuVQr311

"...Cesar Jaramillo, executive director of anti-war group Project Ploughshares told MEE that the deal constitutes 'the biggest test' for Canada's purported commitment to human rights. 'The incompatibility of Canadian arms exports to Saudi Arabia with domestic and international miitary export controls has long been apparent.

Yet Ottawa has dismissed, ignored or minimised every possible red-flag in its determination to continue arming Riyadh's autocratic regime,' Jaramillo said in an email. 'But the situation prompted by Khashoggi's assassination is about much more than export controls. It is perhaps the greatest test in years of Canada's commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.'

He said conducting business as usual with the Saudi government would send a clear message to Riyadh that it can do whatever it wants without consequence. 'If arms shipments continue...The Saudi regime will have every reason to feel emboldened to continue its repressive behavior, knowing that Western arms will flow despite the obligatory expressions of concern by those providing them."

Ottawa Eyes Freezing Permits For Armoured Vehicle Sales To Saudis As It Re-examines Contract

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-prime-minister-trudeau-...

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government is looking at suspending the federal permits that allow the export of a massive sale of armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia. He made the comments on Wednesday while reiterating that Canadians are going to expect Ottawa to take action over the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Amnesty International on Wednesday harshly criticized Mr Trudeau for his hesitation in cancelling the deal noting that the Saudi monarchy has also spearheaded a war on Yemen that has left thousands dead and wounded.

'It is appalling that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would stand behind a multi-billion-dollar arms deal with Saudi Arabia as the country's atrocious list of human-rights violations continue to grow, AI Canada secretary-general Alex Neve said in a statement.

'Human rights do not and can never be allowed to carry a price-tag. The people of Yemen do not deserve to be told that protecting their rights and doing everything Canada can do to avoid any degree of complicity in war crimes at the hands of the Saudi-led coalition  that has caused so much suffering over the past three years, is not worth $1-billion.'

A suspension of exports under the LAV deal, as Mr Trudeau is considering, is not the same as cancelling the deal..."

Erdogan Rehabilitates his Image With the Khashoggi Murder

quote:

ILHAN TANIR: Yes, thank you for pointing that out. First of all, I have to say once again, this was a horrible act against journalist Khashoggi. So, we are putting these aside, we condemn this, we want to never see any kind of act similar to this. But what Erdogan gains from this? Erdogan has been dismantling Turkish media for over a decade. Turkey had a very lively media until a couple years ago. Despite his efforts, Turkey still had a media that represented very different segments of Turkish society. Since the coup attempt in 2016, now basically 90 percent of the media in Turkey is under the thumb of Erdogan.

And Mr. Erdogan is winning in several fronts in this Khashoggi situation. First of all, Mohammed bin Salman and Erdogan have been rivals since the coup in Egypt in 2013. Saudis and the Turks are on the opposite side of the regional balance and the Turkish Katari wing are under the attack of the Saudi, UAE, Egypt and some other Gulf countries. Now that Mr. Erdogan leaking these horrible acts every single day, he has been undermining Mohammed bin Salman. We know that some of the columnists in Turkey, very close to Mr. Erdogan, argued a couple days ago that Mohammed bin Salman might stay in as a Saudi ruler for the next 50 years because he is young. So, that is why the Turkish government is going after him and he’s trying to force him out.

Secondly, as a main point, Mr. Erdogan, who has been dismantling Turkish media, jailing hundreds of journalists. Turkey, for years now, is the country which jails the most journalists, right now there are 176 journalists. And Mr. Erdogan has shut down hundreds of media outlets since 2016. So, he could be the last person in the world who could be classified as friendly to the free media. But now, since Khashoggi is a journalist, he and his officials in Ankara are depicting themselves as if they are somehow deciding journalism or free media, which has nothing to do with what they are doing.

quote:

SHARMINI PERIES: And finally, Ilhan, what is President Erdogan’s ultimate goal in all of this, what is he hoping to achieve?

ILHAN TANIR: For the last couple years, Turkey has been going from one election to another election. There are two general elections and presidential elections. And all of these, Mr. Erdogan used many of the foreign policy issues domestically. And in this process, he severed ties with several EU countries, his relations with the EU got worse, his relation with the U.S. and many other countries in the region. Basically, Mr. Erdogan, yes, he got what he wanted as a presidential system. He holds the whole Turkish system now, he’s the one executive person in the Turkish Parliament, traditionally, historically a very important part of the Turkish political system now out of the picture and there’s no checks and balances.

But in this process, Mr. Erdogan isolated himself and his economy is doing very badly. Everybody, including very reputable and respected economists, predict that Mr. Erdogan’s country’s troubles are just starting now. And now, I think with this Khashoggi affair, he’s making a lot of progress to be integrated again. It released this American pastor just last week, coinciding with the Khashoggi situation. I think what he wants is, again, he wants to be part of the respected statesmen. He wants to be part of the Western world and he wants to be part of the international community and he wants to be able to, again, visit the Western capitals and show off. I think this is what he’s gaining right now, as again, he has the upper hand and higher moral ground due to this hideous, horrible act apparently committed in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

I think this situation is complicated because the relationship between the world oil players is complicated.

Saudia Arabia gluted the world market to force prices down to hurt Iran Venezuela Canada Russia and the US shale oil producers. Obviously oil importing countries are happy with cheap barrels coming in. Not the US shale oil producers. When Trump asked Saudi king to increase production, I'm sure US shale oil barrons got twisted up.

Europe Japan SK and probably a bunch of other players could actually be supporting Trumps previous call for increased production? Maybe Trump is full of shit and actually wants Saudi to cut production? Either way, the numbers supporting greedy oil corporations dictate oil producers in Canada US Russia Venezuela and Iran are all on the same side

Tories abstain as European parliament overwhelmingly backs EU-wide arms embargo on Saudi Arabia

The European parliament has called for an EU-wide arms embargo against Saudi Arabia, piling pressure on Theresa May to follow Angela Merkel’s lead and suspend weapons sales to the autocracy.

The vote comes the same day as Saudi Arabia’s public prosecutor confirmed that the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi was “premeditated”, and amid renewed calls for the west to stop supplying the country’s bloody war in Yemen.

British Conservative MEPs were branded “disgraceful” after they abstained in a specific vote on whether to impose the arms embargo on the kingdom, which passed 242 votes to 23 – though they ultimately backed a wider motion condemning the Saudi’s conduct.....

Police are investigating the mysterious deaths of two sisters from Saudi Arabia whose bodies, bound together with tape, washed up on New York City’s waterfront last week.

The sisters, Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22, were discovered Oct. 24 on a bank of the Hudson River, about 225 miles from Fairfax, Virginia, where they lived and were reported missing in August.

As of Tuesday, investigators still had not determined how they died. The sisters’ bodies were taped together and facing each other, but had no obvious signs of trauma, police said. They were both fully clothed.

Their mother told detectives the day before the bodies were discovered, she received a call from an official at the Saudi Arabian Embassy, ordering the family to leave the U.S. because her daughters had applied for political asylum, New York police said Tuesday.
