Of course they're not Nazis.

Nazis were members of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP), who assumed power in Germany in 1933 and effectively ended on May 7, 1945. So,  pleased to announce to all those that hadn't heard the Nazis are no more.

It's a simple title chosen on the fly not a treatise. I didn't ponder unduly at its choosing. It works for me. Blame it on Jerry Seinfeld. Instead of 'soup' you got 'nato'.

US Could Be At War With China In Just 15 Years, Warns Ex-US Army Chief in Europe

"The former commander of the US Army in Europe has issued a sobering assessment of the deteriorating state of US-Chinese relations, predicting that it's very likely the two nations will be at war in fifteen years. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on Wednesday, Retired Lt Gen Ben Hodges said that the US will have to shift its military to the Pacific 'to deal with the Chinese threat' - requiring Europe to take a more active role in its own defenses..."

The Anti-Russia Cold War in the Arctic is Heating Up

https://www.counterpunch.org/2018/10/26/the-anti-russia-cold-war-in-the-...

"...NATO is always on the lookout for excuses to indulge in military action (such as its nine-month aerial blitz that destroyed Libya [led by  Lt.Gen. Charles Bouchard RCAF]), and its Arctic-focused Trident Juncture is yet another confrontational military fandango designed to ramp up tensions.

The US-NATO military alliance is preparing for war in the arctic, and is deliberately provoking Russia by conducting massive hi-tech maneuvers ever-closer to its borders. But the Pentagon and its sub-office in Brussels had better be careful."

Putin's Russia in biggest Arctic military push since Soviet fall

Quote:
But nearly three decades after the Lenin was taken out of service to be turned into a visitor attraction, Russia is again on the march in the Arctic and building new nuclear icebreakers.

It is part of a push to firm Moscow's hand in the High North as it vies for dominance with traditional rivals Canada, the United States, and Norway as well as newcomer China.

Interviews with officials and military analysts and reviews of government documents show Russia’s build-up is the biggest since the 1991 Soviet fall and will, in some areas, give Moscow more military capabilities than the Soviet Union once had.

Martin N.

Is it not easier to just learn Russian than all the effort required for defense? All those icky guns and assorted macho stuff - much easier to be peace loving isnt it? Like Poland in 1940.

Here's a thought. What if Russia invaded the northern regions of North America, won, then supported the Indiginous peoples of Alaska North west territories, Nunavit and Greenland to form completely independent governments?

Or is it more important to keep these regions Danish, US and Canadian?

Is there a population large enough to support a government? Would the Russians let one be independent any more than Canada and the US would.

I think not on both counts. Still it is a nice fantasy to imagine. I think the fantasy gets popped once you consider that the most powerful piece could be Republican-voting Alaska... the rest might prefer to stay Danish or Canadian than be effectively colonized by Alaska.

For me it got popped as soon as I had to imagine Russia going to war with three countries, winning, then magnanimously handing the Arctic over to Indigenous people with a hearty "You're welcome!!" like a fireman rescuing an old lady's cat from a tree.

Sure but even if you suspend belief about the means, the result is also not desireable. Canada's North would rather be attached to Canada -- as shitty is it is to them -- than to Alaska. Of this I am sure. Even with a fantasy means ther eis no desire for that.

If I want to fantasize, I would rather indulge in Northern Canada, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland - even the most northern Russians being connected than a relationship with what lives in Alaska.

Hell yes and that's among the greatest understatements of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The US is by contrast an empire declining beneath the weight of its grotesque military budgets and wars, even if it's not sinking as fast as Norway's frigate in NATO's latest war games. Question is, will its handlers take the rest of the world down with it, either by accident or on purpose?

Pelosi and McConnell: Cranking Up Bipartisan Madness For NATO

"...McCain conveyed the common madness of reverence for NATO and the common intolerance for anything that might approach a rational debate on whether it's a good idea to keep expecting an American-led military alliance to, in effect, push Russia into a corner. Doing so is understandably viewed from Russia as a direct threat. (Imagine a Russian-led military alliance expanding to Canada and Mexico, complete with some of the latest missile systems on the planet.)

Ever since the fall of the Berlin Wall - and the quickly broken promises by the US government in 1990 that NATO would move 'not one inch eastward' - NATO has ben closing in on Russia's borders while bringing one nation after another into full military membership.' During the last three decades, NATO has added 13 countries - and it's not done yet.

Scott Taylor: On Target - US Moral Claim To High Ground is Pure Hypocrisy

http://espritdecorps.ca/on-target-4/on-target-us-claim-to-moral-high-gro...

"...First of all, who even knew that the US had a contingent of troops in Libya in the first place? Even during the rebellion [Nato-backed regime change] in 2011, the deployment of US, British French and yes, even Canadian special forces, troops on the ground were officially denied. Canada unofficially let the cat out of the bag by having members of the Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) march in the Nov. 24, 2011 victory parade on Parliament Hill but no official announcement was ever made.

As for the US troops in Libya, no mention was made of how many were withdrawn or how many remain on the ground. If US troops are fighting and killing people in Libya, exactly who are they battling? Just as important is the question of who exactly are they fighting in support of, and under what legal authority? If the US truly respected international law, they would not be withdrawing troops from Libya and Syria because they should never have been deployed there in the first place.

The NATO cheerleaders and apologists pride themselves on claiming that we, as alliance members, are part of a 'rules-based international order'. This, they tell us, is what sets us apart from rogue states like Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, Pakistan, etc who simply play by their own set of rules. If the true rule of the jungle is that 'might is right' then let's start by being honest with ourselves and quit the moral posturing. Rules are only for the weak."

NATO Bitterly Divided As London Summit Begins

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2019/12/03/nato-d03.html

"As heads of state of the NATO military alliance arrived yesterday in London for a two-day summit beginning today, 70 years after NATO's foundation in the aftermath of WWII in 1949, the bitter divisions tearing the alliance apart were on display. Facing defeat in their 8-year proxy war in Syria and in wars across the Middle East, the NATO powers are preparing a reckless escalation with potentially catastrophic consequences.

In particular, the tactical divisions over US imperialist foreign policy underlying the Democratic Party's campaign to impeach Trump and denounce him as a pro-Russian traitor are clearly linked to explosive conflicts within the entire NATO alliance. Engler posits that a reason for NATO was to "blunt the European left".  The part of that West European "left" that was seen as a menace was the Communist Party which, especially in France, was strong, after WWII, and was close to Moscow and the USSR, a One-Party state (the Reds had won in '18), former leader of the Comintern (dissolved in 1943), founded by Lenin/Trotsky in 1919 to encourage Communist One-Party governments where possible in the world.  If you're looking for a Menace to justify NATO (good for arms sales, of course) its not exactly "the left".  NATO has always been so important for the Canadian elite (except maybe  Eric Kierans).

Erdoğan is not welcome in Cambridge

The Nato summit has brought Presidents Trump and Erdoğan to the UK this week. Their visit has already been met with huge protests in London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. On Thursday 5 December, residents of Cambridge will also be protesting in the light of an invitation to Erdoğan to open the new Cambridge Central Mosque.

Several organisations and a growing number of individuals have signed a letter initiated by Muslims Against Erdogan. As the letter explains, ‘UK Muslim residents and particularly of Cambridgeshire and student groups and societies at the universities and colleges in Cambridge’ are protesting against the decision to invite Erdoğan. The letter, which can be signed directly, by emailing [email protected] or by messaging the Cambridge Stop the War facebook page, highlights the way Erdoğan’s government is:

currently systematically abusing the human rights of Muslims and other religious and ethnic minorities alike living within Turkish borders, as well as engaging in cross-border wars of aggression and military operations against majority Kurdish regions of Syria and Iraq. In the last five years alone, the Turkish state’s indiscriminate killing sprees resulted in the death of thousands of Muslim Kurds in three countries.

Local shops in the area have been asked to close for the time of the visit. Mill Road will be closed from Coleridge Road to Brooks Road. Shopkeepers are disgusted that the war criminal is coming to Cambridge. One shopkeeper, who will be joining the protest on Thursday, said: ‘He has killed children. Just this week, children were killed. How can he come show his face here?’
