The Secret About Free Trade is Out of the Bag

https://nowtoronto.com/news/free-trade-canada-u.s.-mexico-trump/

"When the project of using trade deals to create prosperity took control of the political agenda during the 1980s, Toronto and Canada had lots of factories and very few food banks - now we have lots of food banks and very few factories. A bad taste may linger among the Canadian public, but so far, astute news management by the Canadian government has prevented any controversy from welling up or spilling over..."

Future of World Trade Organization splits leaders at Asia-Pacific summit

Disagreement over the body that resolves global trade disputes split Asia-Pacific countries at an international economic summit, leaving the annual gathering the victim of a trade war between the world's two biggest economies.

The Liberals have been championing changes to the World Trade Organization, which has drawn the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, organizing a meeting last month in Ottawa to start crafting a road map for reforms.

The U.S. has openly blocked the appointments of new judges to the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism, known as the appellate body — a tactic that threatens to paralyze the organization and prevent it from making decisions.

quote:

The outcome seemed destined from the start of the summit as China and the United States used the annual forum to lay out competing visions for trade and investment at the gathering of nations, which combined represent about 60 per cent of the global economy and half of global trade.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence traded barbs Saturday in a battle for global influence. Both left the summit by early Sunday afternoon amid what reports described as tense backroom negotiations on the wording of the final communique from the summit.

Thousands march in Montreal in support of farmers, against trade concessions

Half a dozen tractors rolled through the streets of downtown Montreal on Sunday as thousands of people marched in support of farmers who say they're threatened by the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

Many in the crowd brandished signs and kitchen utensils and pushed shopping carts as they joined an hour-long march organized by Quebec's farmers' union.

The union, known by its French language acronym UPA, says Canada made "unprecedented" concessions in the dairy sector during negotiations for the USMCA deal.

President Marcel Groleau argued that producers in Quebec have to pay higher wages and meet higher environmental standards than those in the United States and Mexico.

He called on the Quebec and federal governments to support local products and make sure any new imports have to meet the same standards Quebec producers are bound by.

"The security of a nation depends first and foremost on its ability to feed itself," he said.

Canadian dairy farmers stand to lose 3.59 per cent of their market to U.S. producers under the new trade deal, although the federal government has promised to compensate producers for their expected losses.

The marchers, many of whom were bussed in from all over Quebec, stretched over several city blocks as they wound their way through Montreal's downtown.

quote:

While she was disappointed with the Trudeau government's concessions on dairy, she said she understands there's likely no going back.

"Protesting and making noise isn't good anymore — it's about educating people the right way," she said.

The union has been appealing directly to consumers, urging them to reject the new imports and support local producers.

Globalization, Inequality & the Predictable Corporate Takeover of the WTO (1/2)

The corporate takeover of platforms like the World Trade Organization has been denounced by developing countries and activists for decades and today the denunciations are reflected in rebuttals to pro-corporate machinations like those unpacked in this series of presentations at the 2018 World Trade Organization Public Forum

quote:

DEBORAH JAMES: We should debate what are the sources of poverty reduction in the world, that which is happening and that which is not happening. And now we’re seeing the negative impacts of globalization in high income countries such as mine, the United States, and this has in recent years contributed to political upheaval. But that globalization has been defended as if it were a great boost to millions of people throughout the world. So if we understand that this type of globalization has not benefited the majority of people in developing countries and we understand that now there’s a huge populist revolt because that same globalization model has not benefited the vast majority of people even in the developed countries. But at the same time, there’s been a huge increase in wealth creation and a huge increase in trade and investment flows. Where’s all the money going?

Well, it turns out that we have the answer in this year’s Trade and Development Report. It’s going to the top one percent of superstar vampire corporations who are sucking even more wealth out of the vast majority of people around the world in the Global North and the Global South and everywhere in between. And we would say that this corporate takeover is the predictable result of these firms using their wealth to intervene in the economy, to rewrite the rules through the WTO and also through bilateral and regional trade agreements, and through electing austerity-focused national governments.

quote:

RICHARD KOZUL-WRIGHT: And by hyper-globalization, we basically see three distinct features from the earlier period of globalization from the end of the Second World War. Clearly, there’s an ideological component with the rise of neoliberalism as the dominant economic narrative. Neoliberalism, though, is not simply about more markets. That’s a very basic kind of philosophical failure in a lot of the discussion of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism is fundamentally about creating a set of rules that allow business to do what it wants, how it wants, where it wants, unencumbered by the actions of governments and other potentially distortionary elements, democracy, trade unions, other things that might get in the way of business doing what it wants, how it wants, where it wants.

And because people like, particularly neoliberals who haven’t read him, like to go back to Adam Smith at this point as a kind of father figure of the neoliberal tradition, which he wasn’t, of course, and Smith had two very important insights about what we would call a rules-based system. Smith recognized, particularly in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, that a rules-based system didn’t just depend on the details of the rules themselves, but the trust that people had in those rules and whether people trusted both the rules and the execution of those rules, that was a key feature of Smith’s understanding of a healthy political economy. And one of the things that we track, particularly since the financial crisis although there were signs of it before of course, was the removal of trust from political systems both at the national level, but I think also the international level, too.

At the national level it’s pretty obvious why this has happened. The response to the financial crisis was, essentially, how do we save the banks. And we saved the banks both by handing out very large amounts of taxpayers’ money, which is how the banking system survived and recovered after the crisis, and then shifting the burden of the consequences of that action onto the vast majority of people through policies of economic austerity. And that combination of saving the institutions that caused the problems in the first instance and then shifting the burden onto your average citizen has clearly removed most people’s sense of trust in the institutions ultimately whose job it is to provide for the welfare of its citizenry.

Canada Arrests Chief Financial Officer of China's Huawei

https://www.france24.com/en/20181206-canada-arrests-chief-financial-offi...

"The chief financial officer of China's global telecomms giant Huawei has been arrested in Canada and faces extradition to the United States, officials said Friday, triggering a strong protest by Beijing, which called for her immediate release.

Meng Wanzhou's detention comes after American authorities reportedly launched an investigation into suspected sanctions [violations] by Huawei, which was already under scrutiny by US intelligence officials who deemed the company a national security threat...."

So Canada arrested her for supposedly 'violating' the sactions illegally imposed by USA in contravention of  a multilateral, UN approved JCPOA deal with Iran etc. Doing dirty work for USA is what Canada does best. This offensive is only just beginning. Soon Canucklheads will be made to hate China just like they do Russia. And it will come just as easily. Whatever's in the pages of NYT, WaPo, the Globe or the Guardian, will soon be in heads here. And those who question the coming propaganda war will be reviled by the msm gullible know-nothings as China 'stooges'.

While I agree that this was a foolhardy and counterproductive act, I think Harper would have been even more eager than Trudeau to do Trump's bidding. Why would you even doubt that? After all, Harper wanted Canada to join the "coalition of the the willing" invading Iraq in 2003.

I doubt you're gonna see China go on a mass-arresting spree of US businessmen; not unless they want to do serious damage to their economic relations. Any retaliation would more likely be directed against missionaries, NGOs, and other economically nebulous do-gooders, eg. that Canadian family who were detained a few years ago near the North Korean border, and had already been engaged in somewhat questionable activities(eg. drawing attention to sanctions-busters on-line) prior to their arrest.

You're not thinking about what you're writting here MM.

Harper increased trade to China by very big numbers. He wanted to eliminate the use of US dollars in trade between Canada/China and did (in theory)! Harper actually did the most of any PM in Canada's history to lessen the trade dependency Canada suffers from with the US (as far as I know)

China was not in Iraq in 2003, Harper was opposition in 2003, not PM.

Also I'm venting here somewhat. Only Ghandi is Ghandi. Sorry if I insulted anyone.

Canada Arrests Huawei's Global Chief Financial Officer in Vancouver

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-canada-has-arrested-huawe...

"...Chinese Ambassador Lu Shaye and four high-ranking members of the National People's Congress canceled an appearance before the House of Commons foreign affairs committee scheduled for Thursday.

David Mulroney, a former Canadian ambassador to China predicted the arrest of Ms Meng will promote a backlash in China and hurt Huawei's efforts to gain business in western countries. 'This is a really big deal. Ms Meng is by birth and position a member of China's corporate royalty,' he said. 'Her arrest on suspicion of violating the Iran sanctions, should be seen as a clear signal that Canada is willing to face China's fury to do the right thing.'

'That said, it will be portrayed in China as Canada kowtowing to Donald Trump. Republican Senator Marco Rubio lauded Canada for the arrest of Ms Meng. Mr Rubio and Democratic Senator Mark Warner wrote to Mr Trudeau in October to caution that failure to ban Huawei could interfere with intelligence sharing and impair cross border cooperation in tele communications. Repubican Senator Ben Sasse, a member of the Senate armed services and banking committees, also praised Canada for the arrest and criticized Huawei as an agent of China's ruling party.

'China is working creatively to undermine our national security interests, and the United States and our allies can't sit on the sidelines,' Mr Sasse said. 'Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the Chief Financial Officer of a giant Chinese telecom for breaking US sanctions against Iran. Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen said Huaawei and Chinese telecom ZTE represent  fundamental risk to Western national security..."

So what's the problem?

It's all about national security. The US government has expressed concern that Huawei might be spying on us through its products, specifically its telecommunications equipment. In 2012, a House Intelligence Committee report detailed concerns that both Huawei and ZTE, a fellow Chinese vendor, pose a threat to national security. US companies were banned from buying Huawei equipment.
