Thanks Unionist good read!

Thanks for your insights, Unionist.

I asked you because I think you're the only poster here who lives in Outremont. : )

(Btw, Chantal Hebert used to live in Outremont, but she said she has moved to Laurier-Sainte Marie).

You're probably right that it was more of a Tom Mulcair riding than an NDP riding. One thing that gets overlooked though in all the hulabaloo over the 2007 by-election is that it wasn't really a Liberal stronghold anymore by that time, so it wasn't quite as big of an upset as people said it was. Plus, Mulcair had been a provincial Liberal, so people were used to voting for him as a Liberal.

The Liberals had been on the decline in Outremont for many years. After Marc Lalonde retired in 1984, the PC's picked up the riding in the Mulroney Quebec wave of 1988. And the BQ placed a strong 2nd to Martin Cauchon in 1993, and a strong 2nd to Jean Lapierre in 2004 & 2006. And the NDP got a good score under Leo-Paul Lauzon in 2006 before Mulcair arrived.

Anyway, as I posted above, Mainstreet says their Outremont poll in August showed the Liberals ahead. And everyone seems to be predicting it will go back to the Liberals (eg. Eric Grenier, Bryan Breguet, David Akin, etc.) so I just wondered whether someone on the ground in Outremont such as yourself had a contrary view. : )

NorthReport

Just like Jagmeet Singh in Burnaby South.

I would be concerned about the Liberals losing their deposit in that one.

The Liberals will win Outremont in a cake walk. It was a Tom Mulcair riding, not an NDP riding.

I think you're right about the weakening of the Liberal hold on Outremont, Debater. But in Québec, there are no smooth ascents or declines. We prefer swings! Cf. 2011.

How could I forget Léo-Paul Lauzon? He was the first NDPer I voted for. Couldn't believe he was running for the NDP! A brilliant academic, strong ally of the union movement, we always used to invite him to speak at conferences - his big thesis was the elimination of tax havens. I broke my own "strategic voting to get rid of the Liberals" trend that year. Plus, I just couldn't bring myself to vote for that neo-liberal Jacques Léonard of the Bloc, even though he had the far better chance of unseating Jean Lapierre (who I think was Transport Minister by then?). My union, and the FTQ in general, shamefully (IMHO) distanced themselves from Lauzon, because he had outed himself as a "federalist".

My hunch is that a by-election will be called soon and the title of this thread will change again.

My hunch is that I could use JKR's advice on buying lottery tickets!

Another hunch I have is that NR would be happier if the Liberals lost the next election than he would be if he won won the lottery. In that case he could accuse Trudeau of rigging the lottery in favour of Liberals.

Obviously the Liberals were feeling the building public pressure to provide Parliamentary representation for the citizens of Burnaby. Not calling the by-election was obviously backfiring on the Liberals so they caved in to the public pressure.

This is just one of many issues hurting the Liberals, but there are several reasons why Trudeau is in trouble in Burnaby South.

Well, we couldn't really stay with the title about Trudeau being scared to call the by-election after the by-election had been called, could we?

Jagmeet and greet: NDP leader hits the streets in high stakes Burnaby byelection

While canvassing Wednesday night, all but one resident recognized Singh. But there were several people who made it clear they don’t plan on voting for him. Some of them just smiled and waved him away before closing the door, while others engaged in conversation, questioning NDP spending and policies.

While dragging her compost bin down a paved driveway, one woman told Singh she’s voted Liberal for almost a decade and she didn’t see that “changing anytime soon.” By the end of a brief but friendly conversation on several issues, she hadn’t changed her mind but was chuckling as she rolled the bin away.

Then there were those who flung open their doors with almost reverence as Singh approached. One elderly Punjabi woman clasped his hands tightly in her hands, and tears filled her eyes when she told him he was like a “god.”

Singh’s wife says this is often the norm at South Asian homes.

“It’s such a big responsibility,” she said, explaining that Punjabi families are elated to see a politician sharing their culture.

Revisionist history.

pietro_bcc

The revisionist history is that Mulcair lost because of his proposal of a balanced budget. If you looked at the actual polling at the time the NDP's support in Quebec held after the balanced budget announcement, it didn't hold after the niqab statement. Some on the left like to hold onto the idea that it was the balanced budget that sunk the NDP because it makes their preconceived notions right. Unfortunately the truth sometimes gets in the way of dogma.

josh

After the Liberals announced that they were willing to run a deficit, their support rose.

In a thread about a by-election in Burnaby babblers are discussing why Quebec voted the way it did in 2015. LMAO

kropotkin1951

The picture above does have him flanked by Peter Julian, whose riding is next door, and Raj Chouhan who has held the provincial riding of Burnaby-Edmonds for the NDP since 2005. He is one of four Burnaby provincial MLA's along with Anne Kang, Katrina Chen and Janet Routledge. Janet's riding is not part of the federal riding but I think that the other three have areas that are in it. Anne and Katrina are BCA alumni.

As well as the provincial NDP MLA's Singh's team needs to get the current BCA council on side especially respected people like Sav Dhaliwal. Sav and other BCA politicians have to step up if they want him to win.

NDP MLA Rachna Singh unveils portrait of first Sikh activist in Canada to be hanged for a political murder

Many Vancouver Sikhs—and quite a few non-Sikhs—know the story of Mewa Singh.

RELATED STORIES

In 1914, he shot and killed an immigration inspector, William Charles Hopkinson, as Hopkinson was at the Vancouver courthouse (now the Vancouver Art Gallery).

Mewa Singh stirs up deep emotion in the Sikh community. That's because he took full responsibility for the murder of a man who oversaw a network of spies and who was instrumental in the expulsion of the Komagata Maru vessel from Vancouver's harbour in 1914.

In a statement before being hanged on January 11, 1915, Mewa Singh said that he committed the murder in response to an earlier killing of a Sikh leader and another activist in the Vancouver gurdwara by one of Hopkinson's moles.

"For the honour and prestige of my religion and community, I have killed Hopkinson," Mewa Singh said. "It was beyond me to tolerate all this."

Today, NDP MLA Rachna Singh unveiled a portrait of Mewa Singh in her Surrey–Green Timbers constituency office to commemorate the 104th anniversary of his death.

Among those present was the artist, Jarnail Singh. He's already completed a series of paintings related to the Komagata Maru, which brought more than 350 passengers of Indian ancestry to Vancouver.

Watch the unveiling of Mewa Singh's portrait in the constituency office of NDP MLA Rachna Singh.

Prior to the Komagata Maru's arrival, Mewa Singh was a close associate of a major figure in the Vancouver Sikh community, Bhag Singh. Bhag Sikh and another political activist, Badan Singh, were the ones murdered in the gurdwara in September 1914.

Earlier that year, Bhag Singh had helped passengers who were stranded on the Komagata Maru after Hopkinson and other officials wouldn't let them reach landfall.

Bhag Singh's murderer was Hopkinson's henchman Bela Singh.

"We Sikhs go in gurdwaras to offer prayer but these wicked ones opened fire in the gurdwara, killing Bhai Bhag Sing," Mewa Singh declared before being hanged. "These sinners have orphaned two innocent children."

After he was hanged, a procession of 400 Sikhs accompanied his body to a funeral pyre at Fraser Mills, according to SFU professor emeritus Hugh Johnston. He's the author of the highly regarded The Voyage of the Komagata Maru: The Sikh Challenge to Canada’s Colour Bar.

The Undocumented Trial of William C. Hopkinson was performed at last year's Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts.

Mewa Singh's portrait also hangs in the Mewa Singh Room in the basement of the Ross Street Sikh temple in Vancouver.

His story has been told in Why Mewa Singh Killed William Hopkinson: Revisiting the Murder of a Canadian Immigration Inspector, by Georgia Straight contributor Gurpreet Singh, who's also the husband of Rachna Singh.

In addition, a play by Paneet Singh, The Undocumented Trial of William C. Hopkinson, shines a light on Mewa Singh's courage in court and his willingness to die for a cause he believed in.

Below, you can listen to Paneet Singh's comments about how Mewa Singh was commemorated in the decades following his death.

Not quite the same thing. That was during the Chretien-Martin war after a decade of Liberal majority government.

Currently we're in the first term of a united Liberal government that just delivered on pot legalization, a policy that the NDP attacked in the last election despite it being in our policy book for decades.

People’s Party candidate in B.C. by-election risks shifting public debate, observers say

Laura Lynn Tyler Thompson/Facebook

Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada announced this week its nomination of anti-LGBTQ activist Laura Lynn Tyler Thompson as its candidate in the Burnaby South by-election.

According to reports, Thompson said Bernier had “bravely declared the death of political correctness,” and praised her party’s leader for being “willing to take the heat to do politics a different way.”

Thompson claimed she had originally wanted to run for Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives, but said she was rejected on the grounds her views on transgender rights would “ruffle feathers” in the Tory leadership.

When the CBC’s Vassy Kapelos quizzed Bernier about Thompson’s hardline views on transgender rights, the PPC leader said he thought his party’s candidate “has a point,” but added he didn’t “want to go in deep in that debate.”

Thompson will face NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, the Liberal party’s Karen Wang and the Conservative party’s Jay Shin in the by-election on February 25.

British Columbia NDP vice-president and LGBTQ community organizer Morgane Oger said she believes Thompson’s nomination for the PPC is a “positive outcome” for the left.

“I think that bigotry, discrimination and hatred wither in direct sunlight. I think the more these candidates have to speak to what they actually believe, the less likely they are to get elected,” she explained.

“It will make xenophobia louder, but the truth is, the louder xenophobia is, the more self-destructive it is,” she added.

However, while the PPC’s candidate is likely to take some votes away from Scheer’s Conservatives, Dr. David Laycock, a political scientist at Simon Fraser University, thinks the left has reasons to be concerned about the PPC’s broader ideological influence.

“The NDP has reasons to hope that Bernier does reasonably well, but that’s a short- to medium-term calculation,” he said.

“Outside of the NDP, the left won’t be happy, to the extent that Bernier’s party stirs up a lot of latent opposition to multiculturalism in Canada,” he added.

Thompson is a former televangelist and staunch anti-LGBTQ advocate who has steadily gained notoriety in B.C. politics over the last couple of years by leading the charge against SOGI 123 -- an initiative designed to protect LGBTQ youth from homophobic and transphobic bullying.

Teaming up with Culture Guard -- a fringe Christian-right organization that promotes, among other things, pamphlets decrying the ‘Health Hazards of Homosexuality’ -- Thompson has claimed B.C.’s anti-bullying initiative is a secret ploy by “puberty blockers” to indoctrinate children with “gender ideology.”

She has also condemned a petition calling for a ban on gay conversion therapy (which is still legal in British Columbia and most of Canada) and campaigned on behalf of Chilliwack school-trustee Barry Neufeld, who called B.C.’s initiative against anti-LGBTQ bullying a “form of child abuse” and has suggested SOGI is a program engineered by elites who want to “destroy gay kids” by “culling them from the gene pool.” Neufeld’s comments about SOGI have triggered a lawsuit by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation.

Thompson’s ally has also been caught sharing anti-Semitic conspiracy theories (he shared an article claiming Jews are responsible for instigating conflicts in Russia) and quack science (he claimed male semen can be used as an anti-depressant for women) on social media.

Thompson tested the political viability of her views with Burnaby voters in last year’s local elections, running for school-trustee in the city’s school district on an openly anti-SOGI platform.

She finished third from last place; a less than impressive performance, especially given the media hullabaloo that surrounded her campaign and platform. As Burnaby Now editor Chris Campbell remarked: “I don't see how someone who lost running for school trustee will be able to win a federal riding.”

However, despite Thompson being unlikely to win the Burnaby by-election, her presence on the federal political stage might indicate the PPC’s willingness to give more ultra-conservative voices a national platform come the general election this fall.

Glen Hansman, president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and an advocate for SOGI, said: “Mr. Bernier frames himself as a kind of libertarian, and somebody who speaks for Canadian values, and yet he’s choosing to lead with someone who has a detailed track record making some pretty heinous comments about trans people specifically.”

“If this is the first impression that the public is going to get, it could be that (The PPC) will be looking for more of the same across Canada: people who under the banner of free speech will make hateful statements about any number of groups,” he added.

In addition to campaigning for a progressive victory in the Burnaby by-election, the left must be alert to the longer term implications of people like Thompson being given a national platform.

Alex Cosh is a journalist and PhD student based in Powell River, B.C. His work has appeared on PressProgress, Left Foot Forward and in several local publications in B.C.
