Sounds to me like a very polite way to say "Fuck you, Jagmeet".

It is also a polite way to say fuck you to the NDP. I always thought he was a liberal and now he has put his personal monetary gain ahead of the welfare of the political party he was supposedly committed to. He should not be a political pundit, it is disgusting.

josh

Mulcair’s probably just going back to his natural party.

pietro_bcc

Ah the old Tom Mulcair isn't an NDPer because he was an MNA for the Quebec Liberal Party. He should've run for the Quebec NDP, you know that party that didn't exist.

People who hate Mulcair would've found a reason to criticize, whether he campaigned for Singh or not. I was glad when he lost the leadership review because he was an incompetant campaigner, but the degree to which some people harbor a grudge against the man is ridiculous. Newsflash, he's not the leader anymore, you won.

NorthReport

Now that he has sucked every cent he can out of the NDP, he's quite the class act, eh!

He let his ego get the best of him and Trudeau squished him like a bug. Good riddance!

But like Rae and Dosanjh the Liberal CBC and Liberal Toronto Star will be drooling over every one of his words. Sad but a true comment on Canada's pathetic media.

Now watch while the NDP haters come running to his defence

For those who don't read French - this Jan. 10 tweet by @theJagmeetSingh blasts Trudeau for being silent over GM's rejection of Unifor proposals to save the Oshawa plant.

Would it be rude on my part to point out that Oshawa is not in Outremont?

And in some more appropriate thread, maybe @theJagmeetSingh and/or his NDP and/or NorthReport could tell us what their proposal is for saving the Oshawa plant. I'm all ears.

I thought Oshawa was in Burnaby?

It is obvious that the federal NDP is adrift and it is not the leaders fault. Apparently he is surrounded by idiotic campaign advisors. He is running in a BC riding where the progressive vote is vehemently anti-pipeline and his response on the RCMP removing First Nations from their traditional territories shows a complete misunderstanding of not only the politics but even the constitutional law. His team seems to be trying to devise strategies to affect the national numbers instead of trying to elect MP's in specific riding. The disconnect is astounding.

So how is Jagmeet's French and does he sound as lame in French and he does in English? These two urban ridings must have infrastructure projects that he could be highlighting and promising as part of his green plan to save the planet. Sorry I forgot talking about a green plan to the save the planet is a leap to far for a party that wants to achieve power.

Indeed, and all the evidence is that there is a willing audience for bold environmental and economic plans. Remember the thread about Corbyn during the period between his winning the Labour leadership, and the general election? There were a few posters here who were constantly going on about how his radicalism was going to destroy the party forever. Well, those are exactly the type of guys (of all genders) who are running the NDP right now. So, they will never do it, and the party will have probably its worst performance since the 1990s. They will blame this on having been too far left.

Debater

Well, Corbyn has been a very mixed bag for the Labour Party.  He did okay in the last General Election, but there are many people who think he is holding Labour back and that support would be a lot higher to beat Theresa May and the Tories with a different Labour leader.

There is also an anti-semitism controversy in the Labour Party now, and several well-known British actors & artists who have supported Labour in the past have left the party.

Debater

Anyway, getting back to Outremont, which is the topic of this thread, here is a tweet from a lady in Outremont who sent this to the NDP:

hey! I live in Outremont where there is a by election. I see no NDP signs but PLENTY of Liberal. If the wants to keep the seat you have to hustle IMHO.

It's been repeatedly proven that Corbyn is not an antisemite and that that whole "controversy" was about forcing Labour to renounce any public criticism of the Israeli government and switch to defending Netanyahu and everything he's inflicted on the Palestinians.  And the people who have left the party are all on its far right wing-they wouldn't support any leader who wasn't a Blairite, and there's no Blairite figure in the whole of the UK who either has any broad personal popularity or any ability to bring young voters to the polls-which is crucial because Labour can never win another general election where young voters stay home in disgust.

Dale Jackaman (Chair – The Bring Back Tom Mulcair Campaign) says of Jagmeet Singh

"Mr. Singh, to be blunt, is just not in (Mulcair's) class. We have no doubt that Mr. Singh will make a fine MP, but it will be some years before he will be able to run a federal political party, or the country."

The more important by-election is in Burnaby-South - the NDP is putting 150%, everything they have into that riding. As a result the other two ridings (Outremont & York-Simcoe) will be pretty much on their own. I think the party has just given up on Outremont, as Burnaby-South s do or die at this point.

lagatta4

Now I've seen LOTS of ndp signs in Mile-End and Lower Outremont, on a shopping trek down there (not far). But there are doubtless more Liberal areas father west.

Debater

Thanks for the update on Outremont, Lagatta.

Agreed, it is astounding.  I guess he missed the protests happening across the country.

North Report, there are several appropriate threads for this, but not this one. By the way, Julia Sanchez's campaign office is open, but not at all set up yet. There are many posters for her at least in Mile End; I didn't get to Outremont proper yesterday. Also posters for Liberal Rachel Bendayan on avenue du Parc.  I didn't see anything from other parties. This can of course be different in other parts of the riding.

Hey I realize the federal NDP is basically in "save the furniture" mode now, but Outremont was THE second ever riding the NDP ever won in Quebec and the critical foothold that enabled the 2011 orange wave. Even with the NDP's low current polling numbers, Outremont is still the kind of diverse, mixed-income urban riding that would be accessible to the NDP if it were in any other province and should form part of the Party's base in Quebec. If the NDP can't win the Outremont byelection can it hang onto any of its other Quebec seats this fall?

Good question. But you never know what the next nine months might give birth to.

Nothing is every perfect but this is the party and the vision I support.

Tommy Douglas

Tommy Clement Douglas was born in 1904 in CamelonFalkirk, Scotland, the son of Annie (née Clement) and Thomas Douglas, an iron moulder who fought in the Boer War.[1] In 1910, his family immigrated to Canada, where they settled in Winnipeg.[2] Shortly before he left Scotland, Douglas fell and injured his right knee. Osteomyelitis set in and he underwent a number of operations in Scotland in an attempt to cure the condition. Later in Winnipeg, however, the osteomyelitis flared up again, and Douglas was sent to hospital. Doctors there told his parents his leg would have to be amputated. Fortunately, a well-known orthopedic surgeon took an interest in his case and agreed to treat the boy for free if his parents would allow medical students to observe. After several operations, Douglas's leg was saved. This experience convinced him that health care should be free to all. Many years later, Douglas told an interviewer: "I felt that no boy should have to depend either for his leg or his life upon the ability of his parents to raise enough money to bring a first-class surgeon to his bedside."[3]

During World War I, the family returned to Glasgow in Scotland.[4] They returned to Winnipeg in late 1918, in time for Douglas to witness the Winnipeg general strike.[5] From a rooftop vantage point on Main Street, he witnessed the police charging the strikers with clubs and guns, a streetcar being overturned and set on fire. He also witnessed the RCMP shoot and kill one of the workers. This incident influenced Douglas later in life by cementing his commitment to protect fundamental freedoms in a Bill of Rights when he was Premier of Saskatchewan.[6]

In 1920, at the age of 15, Douglas began an amateur career in boxing at the One Big Union gym in Winnipeg.[7] Weighing 135 pounds (61 kg), Douglas fought in 1922 for the Lightweight Championship of Manitoba, and won the title after a six-round fight.[7] Douglas sustained a broken nose, a loss of some teeth, and a strained hand and thumb.[7] Douglas successfully held the title the following year.[7]

In 1930, Douglas married Irma Dempsey, a music student at Brandon College. They had one daughter, actress Shirley Douglas, and they later adopted a second daughter, Joan, who became a nurse. His grandson is actor Kiefer Sutherland, son of daughter Shirley and actor Donald Sutherland.[8]

Unfortunately he could never win even a single seat in Quebec. In the meantime I think the NDP candidate sounds like a good fit for the riding and I agree with those who say that winning this seat is as important to the NDP as winning in Burnaby. I also think that the NDP will get decimated from coast to coast in the next federal election.

Michael Moriarity

I think it'll probably be considerably worse than decimation. Losing only 10% of their current seats would almost be a victory, given the polling in the last year.

NorthReport

How about Ruth Ellen Brosseau - has she been campaigning yet in Outremont?

lagatta4

Not as far as I know - the campaign has scarcely started. People who know REB appreciate her very much, but Alexandre Boulerice right next door is far better known in Outremont.

NorthReport

With their great canadidate now is the time for Singh's NDP to come alive in Outremont.  Jagmeet Singh and Julia Sanchez should have a rally there and the sooner the better. The Liberal overconfidence could conceivably damage them just as Mulcair's ego-tripping did to the NPD in the 2015 election.

WWWTT

Not sure if Jag can help more than hurt in Outremont? For sure there’s still lots of NDP MP’s in good standings that are close by that can pull in votes!

Isn’t it interesting how things xan change on a dime in politics

Onlya a short time ago Liberals were suggesting Kennedy Stewart only won by a few hundred votes and Singh was in trouble in Burnaby South

It was utter nonsense fron the beginning but typical Liberal talking points

Now that Burnaby South is a wrap for the Singh-led NDP what’s next?

Outremont of course and the NDP have a credible candidate who had been out pounding on doors for some time now

Elections  are often full of surprises so let’s see what surprises await us in Outremont

Fundraising - which Jagmeet should have been doing since the day he was elected leader.

This is why I trust Harper on the pipeline issue more than I ever trusted Singh. Sure I vehemently disagree with Harper, but he at least has thought through his position thoroughly, has decided what he wanted to do about it, and most importantly, had the guts to actually defend his decision and posistion no matter what anyone else thought. I always thought Singh's position on the pipeline was more opportunistic, especially since he was the last of the candidates to show his cards in that area.

Do you have any idea how many fundraising e-mails I've been getting from the NDP, especially around the close of a fiscal quarter?

Starting with a fundraiser for the NDP candidate in Outremont.  I'm not sure that I accept that that writing IS a slam dunk for the Liberals.  In fact, the arrogance the Liberals are showing about the race there can be weaponized against them.  The entire Quebec caucus should come and work the riding at every opportunity and show some fight.  This is a real chance to appeal to the underlying resentment a lot of voters feel about the sense of entitlement Team Justin exudes.

Sending out fundraising emails is NOT working. Jagmeet Singh was elected leader for his star power and ability to fundraise. He should've had some strategy to fundraise coast to coast to coast that didn't fall back on just sending an email.

Remember that like Alexandre Boulerice, Justin is right next door to part of that riding.  I got a phone call about the inauguration of Julia's office today (Thursday) but told them I wasn't sure as it was very cold and I had a sinus infection. Sadly, I decided not to go, but there will be other meetings.

Chantal Hébert said tonight that Outremont is what's important to the Liberals in these by-elections, not Burnaby South.

She says that since Outremont is her backyard, she can see that the Liberals are very active with signs and pictures of PM Trudeau, etc. and that this riding has iconic value to the NDP & the Liberals.

Chantal's analysis of Outremont is at about 1-2 minutes into the video:

Lots of "ethnic politics" going on in Outremont too, but in that case it is the specific courting of Hassidic voters, who have a reputation of voting as a bloc.  (As opposed to the many other Jewish people living in that riding, which includes two historic Jewish-immigration neighbourhoods, Mile-End and CDN).

But this is mostly hearsay, and I'd like to hear about the veracity of the allegation from others. No surprise that it is mostly secular Jewish friends who are scathing about that!

I get that.  The Liberals are STILL furious about the NDP taking the by-election there in '07 and having the temerity to hold the seat at the '08 federal election-as they see it, they are simply entitled to all non right-wing and non-hardline sovereigntist voters in Quebec; as Team Justin sees it, the NDP had no right to ever win a Quebec seat in a general election, let alone that one-off by-election thing in Chambly years back.   They think if they can take Outremont, they can erase the NDP in Quebec in the fall.

Rachel Bendayan, the Liberal candidate, is Jewish, so she is well-known in the Jewish community in Outremont/Montreal.  And with Tom Mulcair retiring, it's possible that some of the voters who voted for Mulcair may vote Liberal again.

I believe the Hassidic voters you refer to voted Conservative in 2015 because of their support for Harper.

As the 2015 Outremont map shows, there was one patch of blue in Outremont amongst all the yellow & red, and I believe that's the Hassidic community:

We all know he's leader, but he's going to spend almost all the campaign in Burnaby.  The sensible thing would be to have the NDP Quebec Caucus campaign in Outremont instead.
