No they are not appropriating -- they came up with these letters for obvious reasons on their own. I doubt the NDP having them is considered a plus or a connection.

Back in the early 90s, conservative Democrats started calling themselves "new Democrats", to distinguish themselves from the supposedly more left-wing McGovern-types. So this isn't anything new.

Basically, the US Democratic Party has existed under that name since the 1830s, well over a century before the NDP was founded. So the onus would have been on the old CCFers and unionists in 1961 to come up with a different name, if anyone was worried about it being apprpriated with the addition of "new" by the American party.

Let the Americans keep the name, NDP. My preference is for Canadian Cooperative Federation (CCF). A democratic socialist society, based on cooperative principles. Cooperative housing, cooperative banking, etc. Time to transition to a green, cooperative Canada?

Well the NDP isn't even "new" anymore. I agree that the CCF is what it should be.

anyway it is not the name but the values that is important. I wish they would go back to heir former ideals.

Me three. Given the failure of voting reform, maybe the NDP and Green should look an alliance. Let the right wing Greens go it alone. They can call themselves Market Greens.

maybe they can rename themselves the New Green Party and hope that the Americans don't have the claim to that one either. NGP may be a name that people can sink their teeth into.

I am not sure that the word federation is essential. I suggest: Sustainability Party (make consitutional the notion of advocating for both social and environmental sustainability).

The initials NDP have been used by political parties all around the world, many of which are right-wing or outright authoritarian. Tommy Douglas and David Lewis didn't invent them. And since the Canadian NDP doesn't operate in the US, why does it matter if the US Dems were changing "NDP" in tribute to Pelosi...assuming they actually are, since you didn't source that? My own theory is that Pelosi loyalists, who tend to be in the less-progressive wing of the party, are chanting "NDP" for Pelosi as a response to supporters of Democratic Socialist congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' calling her "AOC".

This is a non-issue, folks.

Anyone is entitled to be known by their own initials, if that's what they want. By the logic of this OP, the makers of polyethylene terephthalate had a legitimate beef against people who called Pierre Elliot Trudeau PET.

I changed the title of the thread because I misused the word "appropriation" in the context of this post. I should have just said House Democrats are down with "NDP" in reference to Nancy D'Alesandro Pelosi.
