PS2: Don't trust my French. Still very definitely a second language lol.

Can you change your keyboard from Canadian English to Canadian French (FRA-CAFR)? Careful of just FR as it might take you to the European AZERTY keyboard. I know how to type on that, but do make more errors.

I just purchased a new computer and am using the old keyboard. Could that be why I'm having problems?

The layout's a software setting; unless your keyboard's really unusual, it shouldn't affect things. Here are Windows and Mac instructions for changing it. If you don't want to go to that trouble, here are Windows and Mac instructions for typing the accents without changing the layout.

... and with respect A24, can you copy and paste the full thread title line I proposed? I see you made one change, but there were a few others...

But of course you have the right to right in less than perfect English, French, whatever. I'd say it is good to look up proper names (people or places) and copy them into your text.

Yes, I prefer l'année de l'expansion du français as well. Since it wasn't my title I just corrected the errors, but the meaning is much clearer with expansion - if not it could convey the idea of a one-off.

I would prefer that if we simply start speaking French throughout the forums if we can and if the issue is relevant. I want to send a message that whether talking about francophone cultural issues specifically or things with impact majority francophone communities, that we do take it seriously and has a much right to be discussed as any other issue. My fear of French-specific forums is in coming across as if to say, "you go over hear and speak French in your little sand box while we let the conversation around serious issues be dominated in English."

In any case, to set my own example, I've started threads about the Ford cuts hurting the franco-ontarian community, a French community in Saskatchewan having to accept unilingual RCMP officers, and an oil train derailment near a French village in Manitoba.

And speaking of the French language, in the spirit of the weekend of Festival du voyageur, je voudrais souhaitter toutes ceux qui ecrivient sur babble un joyeuese fete Louis Riel!

Unionist

Bonne journée de Louis Riel! [lundi le 19, n'est-ce pas?]

lagatta4

Yes. Remember that a lot of voyageurs, or coureurs des bois, were Métis.

That's not how I see it!  Lots of languages in this world and lots of serious interesting intellectual intelligent going on not in English. Sorry I do not speak French or Portuguese. My loss, not anyone else’s!

My second language is Chinese, so not a total loss for me.

Oups, t'as raison hihi!

I agree with Aristotled24 on this one, but I'll admit to regional bias: conversations where one person speaks in French and the other responds in English, or both switch mid-sentence, are extremely common here. They might be alienating outside of Québec. Plus, I don't know if our mods are comfortable enough in French to moderate bilingual threads (Google Translate can help some, but when it comes to more subtle terms-of-service violations, nuance often matters).

That's not how I see it either. I was talking specifically about babble, and by far the dominant language on this board is English. What I'm saying is that I want to see how we can incorporate more French into these discussions. Maybe based on sheer numbers the number of discussions in French and English will never become truly equal, however let's open the door here on babble for more non-English discussions.

Speaking on your point, what about other languages, like Chinese or First Nations languages? Canada prides itself on being a multi-cultural society. Is there room on babble to actually live that out?

I believe it's up to the owners of rabble. I know for a fact some forums clearly spell out that their forums are/use English upon registering a new account/profile. But I never seen anyone banned suspended for using languages other than English. I'm sure this would be a condition of other forums in other languages and countries.

In a way I kind of like it when other languages are used because it forces the reader to learn something very new.

If anyone feels strongly about this issue, I would recomend getting in contact with the moderaters and/owner of rabble.ca and running it by them. If you haven't heard anything back from them for using other languages, then I would assume they don't mind?
