The Nazi Post's headlines aren't misleading enough for some people.

Gee, I wonder which political party is most interested in preventing Singh and the NDP from doing well?

"Thompson said the murder of Burnaby teen Marrisa Shen was an example of why Canada must screen refugees more stringently. The man accused of her murder is a refugee from Syria, but there is no public evidence suggesting he had a criminal record or that there were other warning signs missed by Canadian officials.

When it came for Singh to answer the question, he said he was “disgusted by some of the values being espoused.”

Some in the audience clapped and cheered for Singh’s comments as others booed and one man wearing a People’s Party button shouted “Canadians first!”

“We're talking about refugees; we're talking about people who are fleeing danger,” Singh said as the crowd grew louder. “These are people fleeing death; these are people who are fleeing serious situations.”

Another man in the crowd shouted “Terrorists!” as Singh continued his answer.

It was the most heated moment in a debate focused on “social inclusion” in Burnaby South."

kropotkin1951

Thanks for that Mobo.  At the end of the article if you look at the video of Trudeau talking to a young woman you see our "feminist" PM feel entitled enough to put his hands on her shoulder like a benevolent patriarch. What a vile piece of work he is.

Of course, Thompson’s campaign isn’t exactly in the clear when it comes to supposed “smear” politics. Her campaign took out an ad in Thursday’s NOW that included listing the word “Korean” four times and “Korea” once next to Shin’s name. Those multiple references to “Korean” were followed by two words: “Identity politics?” I read that as saying the Conservatives are only running Shin as a candidate because he’s Korean. That sounds pretty smearish and race-baity to me.

It’s hypocritical because ex-Liberal candidate Karen Wang had to resign for her WeChat posts that mentioned race in the campaign, but Thompson definitely also dragged race into the campaign with her ad. Seriously, she mentioned Shin’s ethnicity five times in one paragraph. This is ridiculous.

NorthReport

Now that the Team Trudeau signs are coming down after the SNC scandal how’s that Burnaby South by-election, who Trudeau said the Liberals were going to win, looking for the Liberals now?

I don't know if a low turnout will favour Singh and the NDP or not, but...

Advance poll numbers don't show massive early turnout for Burnaby South vote

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is fighting for his political life in Monday's federal byelection in Burnaby South, spending the last few weeks campaigning in the riding to win himself his first seat in the House of Commons.

Voters don't seem to share his sense of urgency, however. New figures from Elections Canada put advance voting over the weekend on track with other byelections held over the last few years — byelections that didn't feature a national leader on the ballot.

Sean in Ottawa

I would not view anything as a guarantee and I do not accept that Singh has nothing to worry about.

There is even the possibility of NDP supporters wanting Singh to lose.

wage zombie

My prediction is Singh #1, Laura Lynn Thompson of Bernier's People's Party #2.

pietro_bcc

There's no way that the People's Party will place second. They may crack 10%, but 2nd, no way.

wage zombie

Did you watch either debate?  The CPC candidate is a total dud, and the Lib candidate isn't much better.

Lots of PPC signs around Burnaby South.

An outcome that would warm Trudeau's heart after several bad weeks.

Yeah, that's right.  If there's one thing Trudeau's afraid of, it's that the internal power struggle within the NDP intensifies to the point where caucus attempts to depose a democratically elected leader eight months before the election.  Because caucus coups have always worked out great for the NDP in the past.

So the misleading headline got you didn't it. In fact the advance poll numbers are normal for a by-election. CBC can spin the norm as anything it wants but it is still the norm. Does anyone have any comparisons to other national leaders running in by-election? Were there any and did they get a huge advance poll bump?  The CBC's journalistic standards are abysmal.

I was actually thinking of a strong PPC splitting the right and forcing Scheer to take unelectable positions as the bigger gift to Trudeau. But yes keeping Jagmeet in place rather than having a more effective NDP leader take over would also be something the Libs would appreciate.

wage zombie

I agree that (if) Scheer's going to have to fend off Bernier eating his lunch and (then) that's great news for Trudeau.

Thanks krop as usual for your ability to the cut through the constant Liberal cheering silliness and get to the crux of the matter

There is not an ounce of anything whatsoever that is newsworthy in the once again usual CBC nonsense

He sounded all right. This by-election might just be the warm up he needs for the big stage. I liked his passion in attacking the racists in the crowd.

Given what his predecessor sounded like it is praise none the less. Trudeau is going to start sounding as phoney as he rally is to more and more people being too polished might not be a great idea either. That is why I liked to hear the passion when he spoke of racism.

NDP, Liberals failed to provide info for visually impaired voters

Singh’s campaign manager, Amber Keane, said her team has since apologized and provided the requested digital files.

“We were at fault here,” Keane wrote in an email. “While we made attempts to secure the proper files, we failed to provide accessible versions of our leaflets in a timely manner.”

Keane said her team has spoken about the issue and agreed they need to do a better job of providing accessible information.

“We must also do better overall, by making sure we are doing everything we can to accommodate all Canadians in being full participants in the election process,” she said.

I also really liked his pledge at 30 minutes in to have the federal government build half a million new, non-market homes.

Also he made headway against the racists as in the next debate, both the Lib and Con candidates made sure to announce how much they appreciate immigration - https://www.burnabynow.com/news/burnaby-south-candidates-called-racist-l...

The racists in the PPC are only going to get louder as the election approaches. We're going to need Jagmeet's voice.

Burnaby South will surprise Canada by electing People's Party candidate, Bernier says

Quote:

The voters of Burnaby South are poised to send a shockwave through the Canadian political establishment, according to People’s Party Leader Maxime Bernier.

He said his party’s candidate in the byelection, Laura-Lynn Tyler Thompson, will win on Monday and  “send a strong message all across the country that the People's Party is there, ready to work for the people.”

Is Bernier saying that about his candidates in the other two byelections?

Laura-Lynn Thompson ran for school board in Burnaby in 2018 and came in eleventh in a thirteen candidate field running for seven positions. She received 15,000 votes out of 50,000 cast.  I wonder where her new found popularity is coming from?

I wrote a good ranting comment about this earlier but I must have screwed up and didn’t post it properly.

Anyways, this Bernier character is talking stupid shit now. He’s not even trying to hide the fact he’s an idiot anymore.

It’s probably super painful for him to see the conservatives in the polls edging ahead of the liberals into minority government territory. And his feeble bellyflopped sad disappointing would of should of could have been all mighty “for the people” party barely at 1%!

If this guy just kept his big garage door mouth shut, the conservative would have a stronger edge on the liberals and he would be guaranteed a lifetime hi profile cabinet position as long as the conservatives formed government.

I cant believe I gave this guy some degree of caution and that he shouldn’t be belittled. I fucked up I guess.

I hate Maxime Bernier and the PPC, but to discount their success in the polls thusfar just because I dislike them makes no sense.

Take this recent Quebec Federal poll.

http://blog.qc125.com/2019/02/sondage-recherche-mainstreetcogeco.html

5% in the province and 14% in Quebec City (which along with Beauce is the traditionally Conservative party part of Quebec.)

14% likely won't win them any seats in Quebec City, but it will likely take some seats away from the Conservatives and give them to the Bloc. I would guess that the PPC likely has some regional strength in traditionally Conservative areas elsewhere in Canada as well. If this level of support holds it could cause the Liberals to win (or the Conservatives to be held to a minority government.) As a result pressure to merge the parties will build and Bernier will emerge with a stronger hand in his position within the Conservative party.

https://www.burnabynow.com/news/new-poll-shows-ndp-s-jagmeet-singh-leadi...

Look at this Burnaby South poll, 8.7%  for the PPC, in other ridings that could easily cost the Conservatives a seat.

A look at the results for the ridings won by the Conservatives in Quebec in 2015 showed the BQ well out of contention in all of them, usually in 4th place. Liberals were in 2nd place in almost all, with the NDP in 2nd place in one or two.

Do you think that will affect a lot of voters in Burnaby?

My post was a response to WWWTT, perhaps I should've quoted it, my bad.

The Vancouver Sun has published an editorial urging its readers (in the Burnaby-South riding) to vote for the Conservatives candidate. The paper is part of the Sun Media chain, so it is no surprise that they would back the Tory candidate.

I just hope voters in that riding ignore that editorial and make-up their own mind.

No problem pietro.

It looks like you did some research on this so your opinion is probably valid. And I see where you’re coming from here.

However, I seriously doubt that it was ever Bernier’s plan to split votes to give the other non right wing parties a better chance of picking up seats.

I say this because I think he already had a strong position in the conservative  party.

I have not seen any polls with his party in any kind of position of getting a seat beyond his own. And I’m assuming he is polling ahead in his riding. But who knows?

That comment he made about Burnaby South is way out there pietro! Polls will be open in less than 48 hours, his candidate has to pull a huge horseshoe out of her ass to even make 3rd showing!

i could be wrong? But it looks like, at this point, Bernier’s party will flop with zero or only one seat in the fall. If he loses his seat, his credibility is completely blown away. If he only wins his own seat, I can’t see him slithering back to the conservatives.

I don’t know pietro, I thought this guy was going to shake things up before, but I guess we’ll have a better picture in a couple days.

Mighty Middle

WOW Conservatives are getting desperate - they are sending out a new flyer saying the only way to save the NDP from oblivion is to vote Conservative!

The thinking being a new leader will do a better job than Jagmeet. Plus increase the Conservatives chances of winning 2015 election. Higher NDP vote it splits the progressive vote to allow a Conservative MP to win in ridings all across Canada.

The Back of flyer (even rabble is being referenced on the back of flyer!)

kropotkin1951

I have said all along it is going to be a race between the NDP and Cons. The Liberals bringing in a retread who used to be a Deputy Speaker during the "wood splitter" years is not going to help them any. The Liberals did well last time by pretending they cared about the environment on the West Coast. The Liberal liar who won North Burnaby was as at least as vocal as the NDP and Greens in his opposition to the pipeline terminus in the unceded territory of the Tsleil-Waututh. The anit-NDP vote will coalesce around the Cons. I wish the PPC was as popular as its proponents like to say it is because the NDP in Burnaby has for decades thrived on three way races.

Pondering

So what are the polls saying about Singh's chance of winning?
