Watching Trudeau at his Town Hall Meeting today it sure looks like he has had the wind taken out of his sails, probably because of Jody Wilson-Raybould's comments that she will continue to communicate with the Justice Committee but this time in writing, and also because he now has an unhappy Caucus. I'm actually getting a little tired of JWR and Phipott dropping hints and refusing to speak while remaining committed Capital L Liberals that fully support the Liberal agenda in every other way. Are they taking a moral stance or making a power play within the party? If what the Liberals did was so bad then sit as independents or join/support the NDP. As it stands their support is for the Conservatives.
Without knowing the truth behind this it is hard to second guess their decision.
I believe that if they left the LPC this would dissipate any pressure that exists to allow them to be heard. It would give the Liberals no reason to relent. I think their stance is on principle but if they left the party it may be read only as something else.
Without the missing information, I think it is impossible to evaluate fairly why they are doing what they are. For me they have more credibility that their party or leader, however.

Never mind "the prospect of an RCMP investigation", the UCP in Alberta is right now being subjected to an actual RCMP investigation, and are still the odds-on favorite to win in April. Caveat: Things could change if either Kenney or Trudeau end up being escorted away by the police in handcuffs. Otherwsie, it all just gets written off as a few bad apples.

Once, when Trudeau caught wind of a whisper campaign emanating from anonymous Liberal sources who were trying to put Wilson-Raybould in a bad light, Trudeau stood up and condemned that campaign and those who would engage in such character assassination from the shadows. It did, one should note, take about a week for him to get around to doing that.
But confronted with what is inarguably a harsher campaign from the shadows against Wilson-Raybould, Trudeau uttered not a peep and failed to condemn the leak of this confidential information. Maybe he’ll get to that next week.

On the elimination of inconvenient Liberals
Welcome to an offensive on Charter rights—This was the week it became necessary to destroy the village of good government in order to save it.
We have learned so much. Within minutes Monday afternoon, two good reporters had stories (here and here) about the Chief Justice of Manitoba, who was a candidate to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada and who, later, wasn’t. Both reporters unfurled similar yarns about a lone Prime Minister standing athwart the tide of conservatism by blocking—shudder—a Harper appointee from sitting on the top court. Jody Wilson-Raybould plays the role of villain in the piece.
Both reporters decorously neglect to mention that Trudeau’s choice for Chief Justice, Richard Wagner, was a Harper appointee.
There are many things we can say about this story, working outward in concentric rings from the thing itself. First, Glenn Joyal’s views, as expressed in speeches that were said to alarm the prime minister, are almost comically orthodox. I first became aware of the notion that Charter litigation systematically airlifts important matters from the parliamentary arena and into the realm of jurisprudence in a Chantal Hébert column in the late 1990s. If I had paid more attention to literally any of my Canadian public administration profs a decade earlier I would have caught the argument then, because it is canvassed in every Canadian political science class. This is not wild-eyed Hayekism.
Second, perhaps the many thousands of Canadians who have applied for federal government appointments under what they thought was a confidential process, introduced by this prime minister, will want to contemplate a class-action suit against him. Because it is now radiantly clear to each of them that their CV is being held hostage by a claque of embattled sorcerers’ apprentices who will cheerfully wheel it over the transom to any waiting scribe if anything about them—their opinions, a fallen political star’s unfortunate decision to argue for their advancement—becomes politically inconvenient. This is the very stuff of the police state.
It was immediately fashionable to wonder on social media how everyone would react if Stephen Harper had done such a thing. It’s germane to note that Stephen Harper never did. Because he had more class. Welcome to the Tet offensive of Charter rights: This was the week it became necessary to destroy the village of good government in order to save it.

Third, Justice Joyal’s wife was in poor health. Apparently we are to believe that 9,000 jobs depended on your knowing that.
If the Trudeau government is not the source of the leak, I assume we will see spectacular efforts deployed in the next 36 hours to find the leaker. Mark Norman-scale efforts. But I’m pretty sure that we needn’t hold our breath, because the government is the source of the leak; that the amiable chap who currently sits in the office once occupied by the Attorney General of Canada will not bestir himself to question Monday’s sickening attack on due process; and that the leak will actually be roundly applauded by the ambient cloud of Liberal and Liberal-adjacent opinion, which became self-aware this weekend and decided Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott are a virus endangering the party’s re-election chances and must therefore be stopped.

This SNC scandal is not only not fading away, it is growing larger and larger with each passing day. I am actually quite shocked at how low the behaviour is of some Liberals, and it is makes me wonder if Paul Martin's people somehow are still involved in running things.
Leak detailing Supreme Court appointment rift only shows how little Trudeau’s camp respects the rule of law
The core question in the SNC-Lavalin affair is whether Justin Trudeau and his advisers respect the rule of law.
The answer appears to be that they have no respect for it at all, after an unnamed source, in an effort to smear former attorney-general Jody Wilson-Raybould, fed reporters a story about a dispute over choosing a judge for the Supreme Court.
Even Liberals are furious over the leak to The Canadian Press and CTV, presumably from someone inside the Trudeau government.
“It is outrageous that there is a leak with respect to the Supreme Court judicial appointment process,” Toronto Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith told the House of Commons ethics committee on Tuesday. “People from all parties ought to condemn that kind of thing.”
According to the reports, Ms. Wilson-Raybould recommended appointing Manitoba judge Glenn Joyal to the Supreme Court as chief justice in 2017, but Mr. Trudeau vetoed the recommendation because he thought Justice Joyal brought too conservative an interpretation to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The implication from the leaker: Mr. Trudeau rightly began to question the judgment of his attorney-general long before the issue of whether to prosecute SNC-Lavalin emerged.
Members of the Liberal old guard are not pleased. The leak “involved extremely confidential information about applicants to the Supreme Court,” tweeted Penny Collenette, who was director of appointments for four years under Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. “Shockingly bad form.”
“Agree,” replied Senator Percy Downe, who served as Mr. Chrétien’s chief of staff. “Appalling behaviour.”
The leak certainly didn’t go down well with Justice Joyal, who is Chief Justice of Manitoba’s Court of Queen’s Bench. Immediately after the story broke, he issued a statement saying that, in fact, he had withdrawn his name from consideration for the Supreme Court after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

Joyal, to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court. The multiple sources who leaked the details claimed Trudeau opposed the appointment because he felt Joyal wasn’t committed to LGBTQ and abortion rights. In response, Wilson-Raybould denied there was any conflict, and pointed out in all-caps that communications about Supreme Court appointments are typically “CONFIDENTIAL … I do however find it extremely worrisome why you are even asking such questions and where you received any such information. Commentary / reporting in this regard with respect to a SCC appointment(s) could compromise the integrity of the appointments process and potentially sitting Justices.” (CTV News, Canadian Press)
The sources also claimed Trudeau overruled Wilson-Raybould to reject Joyal. Yet in a statement, Joyal said he withdrew his application for the Supreme Court position himself because of his wife’s metastatic breast cancer. “Regrettably, that detail was omitted from the now published media reports … I fear that someone is using my previous candidacy to the Supreme Court of Canada to further an agenda unrelated to the appointment process. That is wrong.” (Twitter)
Not okay: Legal scholars and lawyers wasted little time in expressing their outrage about the stories. “Joyal should *never* have been put in the position of responding publicly to the scurrilous stories published today,” tweetedUBC law prof Dr. Emma Cunliffe. Added constitutional scholar Emmett Macfarlane: “That anyone would leak this in an attempt to discredit Wilson-Raybould says a lot of troubling things.”
