Here is an explanation of DPAs and it seems to me that DPAs are better than a criminal trial for the victims and employees.

SNC-Lavalin brand at risk of turning ‘toxic’ due to ‘muddled messaging’: PR experts

Further clouding the legal front are court documents that show Quebec prosecutors are working with the RCMP on the possibility of new criminal charges against SNC-Lavalin tied to a contract to refurbish Montreal’s Jacques Cartier Bridge.

I wonder if JWR knew this was coming down the pike. That would be a reason not to give them a DPA and a reason to keep the reason private.

Interesting observation by those attending the Equal Voice reception last night for 338 young women in town for a Daughters of the Vote events. There was a 20-minute lineup for photos with , Not so much for anybody else.

Ummm... JWR didn't do anything wrong, but she resigned. But that was different. Right?

NorthReport

Yes actually it is, and everyone knows it is.

Right. Everyone knows. Right. So:

1. Why exactly did Butts resign?

2. Why exactly did Wilson-Raybould resign?

This should be an easy quiz. Right?

NorthReport

Give it a break Unionist.

Emergency Federal Liberal Caucus meeting tonite at 5:45 PM but JWR definitely appears to be out!

It won't put the story to bed but it will tell Canadians that Liberals protect Liberals.

Thank goodness JWR made that tape.

Ok, that's 0 out of 2. But I'll give you a break: Re-test scheduled for tomorrow morning. Make sure to review your notes this time!

After that stirring letter she wrote, I'm predicting she'll not only be allowed to stay, but be named as caucus chair.

Will she be recording the proceedings?

Principles or grubby politics?

Trudeau has failed on 3 counts:

Women

Indigenous Peoples

Doing Politics Differently

Yes the Liberals can of course can continue to do their grubby politics and will probably even arrange for the Norman trial to take place after the election.

Principles or grubby politics?

Candians will decide in October which they want.

NorthReport

There are conflicting reports about whether or not there will be a Lib Caucus mtg tonite, but regardless whether it is tonite or tomorrow, or both, Caucus can have their say but Trudeau will make the final decision.

Pogo Pogo's picture

1. Why exactly did Butts resign?

Questions were raised about undue pressure from the political arm of government on the judicial arm.  Butts was identified as one those applying pressure.

2. Why exactly did Wilson-Raybould resign?

I understood that she accepted a demotion cabinet shuffle but was not changing her views.  When the PM went on national TV and said that she was in support of his position regarding  SNC because she was still in Cabinet she resigned the next day.

This is my understanding as well.

When he resigned, he explicitly denied that there had been any undue pressure from either the PMO or the PCO. He said he was resigning because he didn't want to be a "distraction". I didn't get it then, I don't get it now. But you're suggesting he's a liar? I'd need to see more evidence before coming to that conclusion.

He didn't quite say that. He said the fact that she was still in cabinet "speaks for itself". So she decided to resign, saying that her resignation "speaks for itself". I've been raising this very question here for weeks. She only came up with this explanation - when, yesterday or so? - and previously, the common wisdom was that she was not "allowed" to talk about her reasons for resignation because she had only been given a "waiver" for the time she was A-G. This makes absolutely zero sense.

The saddest thing in my view is that this whole "scandal" is an irrelevant distraction for first world folks who are comfortable and have nothing else to worry about except: "I told them I had made up my mind and they kept bothering me!!", and "We had to talk to her 5,000 times to make sure she understood about the jobs!!" Then everyone is supposed to take sides. These are all self-serving opportunistic servants of the 1%.

NorthReport

It is as Pogo stated, and what krop understood as well.

Grubby politics of course. Did you expect anything else because I didn't. Plus ça change. I won't expect anything else if the NDP is elected either.

Her letter says:

We committed to change old and cynical patterns of centralizing power in the hands of a few unelected staffers, the marginalization of hundreds of members of parliament with expertise and insights to offer....

Maybe that happened but I don't remember that it did. If it did happen why did she use staffers to communicate with the PM? She has not claimed that she was blocked from speaking or writing to him directly.

I apologize for getting a personal (if you consider it that) but I think you're a really smart and open minded woman. I find it really strange that, in light of the clear evidence of Trudeaus true character,  you continue to suggest JWR should have just went and talked to him.

I'm saying more than that. I'm saying it was her responsibility as Justice Minister and Attorney General to warn Trudeau directly if she believed his staff was treading on dangerous ground and doing it in his name.  I'm saying that a person who is too intimidated to face the PM for fear he will yell is not qualified for the job no matter what their sex.

I'm saying suggesting JWR was too intimidated by Trudeau to face him directly, or even write him a note, is disrespecting her and all women. Just because she is a woman is no reason to jump to the conclusion that she felt too intimidated or afraid of Trudeau to speak to him directly.

MPs have now raised the issue of JWR not communicating directly with Trudeau and warning him of the behavior of his staff. If she found the idea of telling him what was going on too intimidating she will say so.

Exactly.

But then, how often is a political scandal relevant for the rest of the world?
The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal was front-page news for months. How important was it really?

Edward Snowden nailed it.

He said the lack of privacy from the Canadian government over its citizens and yet Trudeau is concerned about JWR exposing his Liberal government's dirty lies on her tape. WTF!

Yes, we are distracted by the minutiae of political rivalries. It's all about taking Trudeau down rather than addressing the systemic impoverishing of the middle class which will only accelerate with increasing job automation coupled with the urgent challenge of climate change which ironically could put a lot of people to work.

To me the biggest problem highlighted in this whole mess is that not even the most important cabinet members meet with the Prime Minister regularly. From September to January they didn't have a direct conversation on government plans and priorities? What is the PM doing if not overseeing his ministers? Parliament doesn't debate stuff. Is nothing even debated in cabinet? PM and and hired staff make decisions and ministers get their marching orders through staff no less?

We worry about members and backbenchers not having enough power within parties. JWR was Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and for five months she communicated with Trudeau through staff? Am I crazy to have imagined that Cabinet Ministers were in regular communication with each other and the PM? At least a once a month in person update?
