Perhaps the 20-year descent into a carnival of utter failure by the current regime in Venezuela will end soon.

It's just too bad that Hugo Chavez isn't alive to see it.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/clashes-rock-venezuela-as-guaido-urges-opposition-uprising-1.4401099

A smaller group of masked youths stayed behind on the highway, lobbing rocks and Molotov cocktails toward the air base, and setting a government bus on fire. Amid the mayhem, an armoured utility vehicle drove at full speed into the crowd. Two demonstrators, their heads and legs bloodied, were rushed away on a motorcycle.

It's a miracle. I should think an armoured vehicle driving full speed into a crowd would cause more damage.

At this point it looks like this last ditch resorting to violence has failed.

The ICM is in full swing with spreading lies and misrepresentation.

On citytv news, they claim that most countries recognize the opposition leader as the president. With lots of news from Canada and US to support the lies.

I thought Freeland's ongoing regime-change collaborations with Bolton/Pompeo/Abrams/Guaido were designed to do that? Perhaps what Trudeau/CBC are really up to is a lame try to  spin odious Canadian toadyism into 'outreach to find a solution' after repeated failures of their puppet's coup attempts.

This article sets out a good timeline of the latest failed coup attempt. I agree with its conclusion that no matter what Maduro may be doing wrong the people fear a US backed coup far more.

Meanwhile, across town, hundreds of thousands marched in support of Maduro.

“We are with Maduro—now more than ever,” said Carmen Mejía, an elderly hairdresser, as she marched the final stretch toward Miraflores. “We Venezuelans only have one president, and that’s Nicolás Maduro, and we need to support him.”

Many in the crowd said it was one of the largest and most vibrant demonstrations in support of the Maduro government, echoing marches from the era of his popular predecessor, Hugo Chávez. This point is key: If this march was any measure, the continuing push to overthrow Maduro has had the opposite effect, consolidating his base despite internal divisions and criticism of his government.

“Guaidó’s stupidity is Chavismo’s best ally, because it has unified people in support of Maduro,” said Gilberto Giménez, the president of the small, pro-Maduro Electoral People’s Movement party.

Likewise all the talk here is of "liberating" Venezuela from a socialist dictatorship but Venezuela is no Iraq.

Let's hope the US doesn't go the Iraq liberation route. What is frightening is that there was more world resistance to the interference with Iraq than there is for Venezuela. It makes me nervous.

Well, we know what a disaster "régime change" was in Iraq, despite the crimes of the dictatorshop there. Régime change is far worse. I loved the quote about Guaidó’s stupidity. Nobody elected him.

There is extreme opposition to military involvement in Venezuela and I think Guaidó made a serious error in appearing to welcome US military intervention. I would imagine that has turned Venezuelans against him and strengthened support for Maduro.

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

Maduro has been profoundly unpopular for quite some time now, and it goes far beyond the usual griping we all do about our politicians.

And the opposition has received pretty minimal traction from trying to capitalize on that.  They serve as an outlet for people's frustration with the government, but by and large it doesn't look like the people support the opposition for their politics so much as the fact that they represent the only option for change.

Venezuela is touted as having a vibrant democracy, and yet for years, the people have had, as their only two choices, Maduro or a rotating cast of neutred opposition leaders shouting in the streets.  When they tried to vote in a new legislature, Maduro simply replaced it with one of his own.  I don't think the people love Maduro and I don't think they love Guaido either.  I think they're sick and tired of watching things get worse and knowing that they can't do anything about it.

NDPP

This is really all about the US orchestrating a regime change and finally getting at all that Venezuelan oil. Just like most of the msm, some here would prefer we divert our attentions instead to alleged misdeeds of the imperialist's 'enemy du jour', aka the legitimate, duly elected, government of Venezuela. Don't fall for it. It's Washington's weapon of mass distraction to cover and conceal yet another  Yanqui smear, smash and grab operation in what co-conspirator Chrystia Freeland calls 'our backyard.'

How come the people most likely to describe Maduro as "legitimate, duly elected" never describe the National Assembly as also legitimate and duly elected?

Remember that election?  And how Maduro just ignored the results and replaced the Assembly with a new one?

Distorting 'Demcracy' in Venezuela Coverage

https://fair.org/home/distorting-democracy-in-venezuela-coverage/

"The Venezuelan government's current mandate comes from winning an election on May 20, 2018 that was observed by more than 150 members of the International Electoral Accompaniment Mission. In a joint report, the observers said of the agency that organizes the country's electoral process, 'the technical and professional trustworthiness and independence of the National Electoral Council of Venezuela are uncontestable.

At every turn, Guaido and his backers have taken steps that have nothing to do with democracy and everything to do with what Oscar Guodiola-Rivera who teaches human rights and philosophy at the University of London, aptly labeled 'a white supremacist foreign intervention.' That corporate media manages to portray this as a 'pro-democracy movement' is both a tragedy and a farce."

US Police Raid Venezuelan Embassy...

'The United States does not recognize the authority of the former Maduro regime or any of its former representatives to allow any individuals to lawfully enter, remain on this property, or take any action with respect to this property,' a notice taped to the door of the building earlier in the day read.

Amid the standoff for control of the building, Venezuela's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for North America reminded Washington that an intrusion would be a breach of international law. 'The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has not authorized the entry of police officers into the former Embassy building in Washington DC. This intrusion is yet another violation of international law by US authorities and aggression against Venezuela,' Carlos Ron said on Twitter..."
