OTTAWA — The New Democrats have removed Quebec MP Pierre Nantel as an NDP candidate following what the party is calling "confirmed reports" that he is in discussions to run for a different party.

Nantel has been a New Democrat MP for the riding of Longueuil—Saint-Hubert since 2011 and had already been nominated as the NDP candidate in the riding for the Oct. 21 federal election.

Melissa Bruno, national director of the federal NDP, issued a brief statement today saying Nantel is now out as an New Democratic candidate.

...

Radio personality and former Quebec legislator Bernard Drainville, citing anonymous sources, tweeted today that Nantel is in discussions to possibly run for the Green party in the upcoming federal election.

Michael Moriarity

Does this mean that M. Nantel thinks he will have a better chance of being re-elected as a Green than an NDP? If so, that is pretty terrible news for the NDP in Quebec.

pietro_bcc

Nantel was against Singh being leader because he didn't like his turban and threatened to leave if he was elected (before walking that threat back), him leaving is a benefit not a loss.

robbie_dee

Nantal had little chance of being elected in that riding given the NDP's current polling. I'm not sure how much better he would do as a Green. I understand that earlier this year there were reports he was considering the Bloc as well, although I guess those can't have been as serious since the NDP went ahead and nominated him.

swallow swallow's picture

Nantel's flirting with other parties (including the Bloc) has been an open secret for some time. The Journal de Montreal wrote about that last February. Not sure what's different now.

Both Andrew Scheer and Justin Trudeau were in New Brunswick this week

Just checked NDP candidates in New Brunswick, and they haven't nominated a single candidate in any of the ten ridings in New Brunswick. It is a blank slate.

Even though the NDP has not historically done well in New Brunswick federally other than Yvon Godin in Acadie-Bathurst and the temporary win by Angela Vautour in Beausejour a couple decades, ago, it is surprising that the NDP has no candidates at this late stage in the game.

Alexandre Boulerice said that he visited Pierre Nantel at his house to find out what was going on and that Nantel admitted he was in discussions with the Greens and it was almost a done deal.

Here's an article in French about it:

https://www.ledevoir.com/politique/canada/560820/le-npd-montre-la-porte-a-son-depute-pierre-nantel

English translation:

The rumor of Mr. Nantel's visit to the Greens' camp, first relayed by journalist Bernard Drainville on Friday morning, forced NDP deputy leader Alexandre Boulerice to visit his colleague at home. "He confirmed very, very clearly that, for him, the page was turned, that he was in discussion with the Green Party, that the negotiations were over, that there were only a few points to settle, and that his decision was irreversible, " says Boulerice.

The NDP has chosen the candidate for my riding Honore-Mercier Chu Anh Pham, who is a former journalist.

So what is the working theory as to why Nantel would do this?  Does the man think he has a better chance of hanging on to his seat if he stands as a Green, or is he doing this to get back at the NPD for some perceived slight?

From 2017

NDP MP Pierre Nantel told Radio-Canada that Singh's religious symbols were incompatible with the province's values.

"We don't want to see any ostentatious religious symbols. We think that is not compatible with power, with authority," he told journalist Louis Blouin on the sidelines of the party's regional caucus meetings Saturday in Hamilton, Ont.

Nantel, a self-described nationalist, said he didn't want to say Singh would hurt the party's chances in Quebec; he just wanted to stress that Quebecers wouldn't recognize themselves in Singh.

Looks like Syd Ryan, well know leftist activist and Former President of the OFL is running for the Oshawa NDP nomination. He ran in the 2007 Ontario election and was about 2500 votes from winning. I'm reading there may be 5 candidates running though, I can't find any lists.

More Nominations:

Stephen Crozier, South Surrey-White Rock -  The president of White Rock’s Democracy Direct slate, and Douglas College teacher and New Westminster and District Labour Council president.
Noel Joe,  Coast of Bays - Central - Notre Dame - Another Indigenous candidate, Former Band Councillor for Miawpukek First Nation, Former AFN National Youth Council

Two Fomer MPs in Quebec are running again in 2019
Djaouida Sellah, Montarville - former MP for Saint-Bruno -- Saint-Hubert from 2011 to 2015.
Paulina Ayala, Sant-Leonard--Saint-Michel - former MP for Honore-Mercier from 2011 to 2015

I also recall both of them being heavily involved with the NDPQ when I was a member, might've actually run for the party, don't remember.

May confirms ex-New Democrat Pierre Nantel is running as a Green candidate

It's official: former NDP MP Pierre Nantel is switching teams and running for the Greens in the federal election.

"Pierre Nantel is a climate leader, and he is one of the most passionate MPs I have encountered in the House of Commons," said May in a statement.

Sid actually had support for running in the NDP leadership that Jag won!

But according to Sid, because he doesn’t speak French, he wouldn’t go there.

I wish Sid the best of luck!

Another Former MP is looking to run again:
Ève Péclet just posted (facebook) she will run again in Pointe-de-L'Île running against the former BQ leader.

An interesting Candidate is running in Kitchener-Conestoga: Riani De Wet.

- South African born, Anti-Aparthied activist; ANC member. Elected to the North West Provincial Legislature in 1994-1999 then elected to Matlosana City Council in 2000. Been in Canada since 2012 and currently teaches at Conestoga College.

Sid Ryan has withdrawn his candidacy.

Dear Jagmeet,

Please accept this letter as my notice of withdrawal from seeking the Oshawa NDP nomination. I am extremely disappointed with the unprofessional and grossly unfair manner in which the Oshawa nomination process is being conducted.

With all the un-do negative coverage of the NPD in Quebec, the party is still seeing amazing candidates come forward:

Hugo Latulippe, Filmmaker, Producer, Author -  Montmagny-L'Islet-Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup

That would be two filmmakers/documentarians as candidates for the NDP along with Min-Sook Lee in Toronto-Danforth.

CBC News:

The NDP candidate for LaSalle-Émard-Verdun, Olivier Mathieu, is stepping down amid allegations of domestic abuse against a former spouse.

Mathieu denies the allegations but says he is withdrawing from the race for the good of the party.

That vetting process isn't going so well.

Here is another strong candidate with the kind of energy a real left wing party needs. Voters elect MP's for local reasons not just because of national polls.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) this evening announced Mumilaaq Qaqqaq as their pick for the Oct. 21 federal election.

Qaqqaq, of Baker Lake, is 25 – which happens to be the median age in the territory, according to the 2016 census.

Long dedicated to youth advocacy, Qaqqaq has been a youth leader with Northern Youth Abroad, and has worked for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., the Government of Nunavut and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. She was widely recognized for her speech addressing suicide in the House of Commons in 2017.

Aaron Watson, with the Nunavut NDP electoral district association, noted that in the 2015 election the party received a record number of votes with Jack Anawak as the candidate. Anawak showed his support Thursday night by attending the event.

The NDP came second to the Liberals that year. Previously, Peter Ittinuar won under the NDP banner in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

I doubt I would pass the scrutiny test with any of these parties. So glad I never considered politics as a career.

It's ironic that the NDP riding association in Nunavut is boasting that Jack Anawak got a good share of the vote in 2015.  Anawak used to be a Liberal MP for several terms.

All these political parties can be kind of funny sometimes.

My current Facebook account would never pass scrutiny. Some of the things I've got on there include repeated denunciations of Israeli attacks on Gaza; multiple anti-Mulcair articles from the 2012 NDP leadership race; denunciations of the NDP's vetting process; and hundreds of posts of photos from ralies against every injustice under the sun -- and this is  only a partial list. I'd have to shutter it and create a new account if I ever wanted to run for an NDP nomination.

Aristotleded24

I've been out through parts of the Winnipeg Centre constituency this weekend. It's only a small area, and early going, but so far the sign count for Leah Gazan is vastly larger than what is out there for Falcon-Ouelette. If this trend holds, it will be a mirror image of 2015, when a large number of sings for Falcon-Ouelette preceeded a shift in support from then-NDP MP Pat Martin to the Liberals.

Any words on what Fortin or Marchand are supposed to have done to deserve that?

I don't know if those 2 candidates necessarily did anything -- it may just be that they chose not to run or they could have been switched to other ridings.

The NDP now have 291 candidates nominated for the 338 ridings. They should have had nominated many more earlier in this election year but at least they have started moving on this. According to wikipedia, they have:

40/42 in BC

3/3 in the territories

28/34 in Alberta

13/14 in Saskatchewan

10/14 in Manitoba

110/121 in Ontario

64/78 in Quebec

4/10 in New Brunswick

11/11 in Nova Scotia

4/4 in PEI

4/7 in Newfoundland and Labrador

Not necessarily.  It's far from certain the huge swing to the Liberals there in '15 will hold up, and really, what case is there for the voters to go back to the BQ-a party which has nothing to offer anymore?

Apparently, the NDP now has more nominated candidates than the Liberals.  Where are the news stories about the lack of organization within the Liberal Party?

And btw, probably the most diverse slate of candidates ever.  Impressive.

Failed Parkdale High Park NDP hopeful Saron Gebresellassi and a group of her supporters have now filed a human rights complaint against the NDP arising out of disputes from the nomination contest previously discussed above.

Quote:

You don’t have to be a Canadian citizen to belong to a political party – or to vote for a candidate running for a party nomination.

But 288 people who have joined a human rights complaint against the federal NDP say they were denied that right during the party’s nomination meeting in Parkdale-High Park back in June.

The complaint alleges that "party officials did not provide... any explanation as to why excluded Canadians were prohibited from voting."

The complaint further alleges that "this procedure amounted to a voting embargo imposed on one ethnic group. It is submitted that the exclusion from the voting list and the accompanying voting embargo imposed on one ethnic group sits in contravention to the legislative requirements under the Ontario Human Rights Code."

The Ontario NDP and the Parkdale-High Park riding association have also been named in the complaint.

Former Halifax NDP candidate stripped of human rights award after comparing Israel to Nazi Germany (National Post)

Quote:

The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission has stripped a former NDP candidate of an annual human rights award after comments she made that compared Israel to Nazi Germany.

Rana Zaman stepped down as a candidate for the party in June, roughly a year after posting a string of tweets that suggested Israeli forces were “aiming higher than 6 million” in their bid to wipe out the Palestinian people. “I wonder if #Israel borrowed this from the #Nazis after they saw how successful they were?” she wrote, adding, “#Gaza is the new #Auschwitz.”

The tweet was later deleted but had been captured in a screen shot by Jewish group B’nai Brith Canada.

kropotkin1951

Persecuted for speaking truth to power. The Israeli government has been acting like a fascist regime and committing an ongoing genocidal ethnic cleansing for over fifty years but never ever compare it to the NAZI's that ethnically cleansed Europe for five years.
