Trudeau has, of course, kept many of his promises. For example, he used tax increases to help pay for new and improved baby-bonus cheques to families that now depend on them.
But, as I had occasion to point out in the preface to the recently published book “Assessing Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Government“, the more a promise would have challenged the established order, the less likely it was to be kept. From subsidies to oil companies to democratic reform to climate change, the bigger and more transformative the promise, the more likely the failure to deliver.

I don't think it is very hard to understand why Tom Mulcair would have a particularly negative view of Justin Trudeau, as distinct from Andrew Scheer.
The prospect of Mulcair becoming PM was real for a while, only to be thwarted by someone he would likely rate as an intellectual lightweight. Aside from Trudeau being the unmistakeable agent of Mulcair's downfall nationally, it also undid much of his work and standing in Quebec, harkening back to 2008, which looks likely to be further unravelled in this election. Trudeau's rise cost him the Prime Ministership, and (indirectly) his role as NDP Leader and even the eventual loss to the Liberals of the seat he had won four times.
Trudeau's rapid rise was , I believe, a jarring surprise to Mulcar. I remember an interview back when Trudeau first became Liberal Leader in which Mulcair said to the journalist something to the effect that there is no remaining mystique to the Trudeau name in Quebec.
Mulcair is a notoriously prickly individual but even Ghandi would have had a hard time not resenting Trudeau for that sequence of events. Add to that the fact that Scheer was relatively non-partisan during his period as Deputy Speaker and Speaker, which spans almost the entire period that Mulcair was in the House of Commons.

No. But he iS working for an amoral far right news network. They hired him as the token 'liberal'....a very conservative liberal at that.
It's a News network even posts opinions from Ezra Lavant. And Faith Goldy (who has sat down w/ Scheer for an interview as a guest on her podcast) , like mulcair, is a contributor.
Thomas Mulcair is and always has beed an amitious conservative leaning centrist.
This is like congratuating Singh for his new gig at Fox after the election.
I'm definitely not implying one is a Conservative if they don't vote Liberal.
Simply said, I'd enjoy to see the Right strangled by the tight leather belt of socialism. I say we go for the jugular with Scheer. Tou can go for Trudeau's but what woulkd that make you? A Liberal? or a Conservative?
The NDP and Liberals should merge. It would be best for everyone.
I look forward to the election even if they very worst case scenario where the Cons win a majority as Albert Ontario and Quebec deal with newly elected Conservative Premiers.

I'm still musing over the thought of Thomas Mulcair being considered an intellectual. Actually, I hate the label but I don't think of him as terrifcally accomplished in passing great policy or writing thoughtful books about our political system.

Yes, there's always been tension & mutal resentment between Trudeau & Mulcair. They were rivals for the anti-Harper vote.
But there were several other factors which brought about Mulcair's "downfall":
1. Harper & the Conservatives -- they used the Niqab issue in Quebec against the NDP going into the Fall of 2015 because they thought it would tank the NDP vote and win the Cons extra seats.
2. Duceppe & the BQ also used the Niqab issue against the NDP and ran attack ads on it. At the time, I remember Lagatta posted here about one of the BQ ads she encountered.
3. Mulcair's own decision to run on a no-deficit/balanced-budget platform in 2015, which cost him progressive votes.
4. Mulcair not taking more personal responsibility for the loss on election night, which caused him to lose votes by the time of the NDP Leadership Convention where he only got 48% approval.
