In BC voting takes place on Monday from 7 AM to 7 pm so the first results should be available after 2:30 PM Pacific Time

This is not what I had understand. My understanding was that voting was staggered and yes NL polls close at 2:30 pacific time but I did not think they were being opened counted and broadcast. This should never be allowed. We do not need to vote at the same time but ballot boxes should be closed until voting has stopped everywhere.

I suspect that I know the reason for this and it is not a positive one: Elections Canada lacks the budget to pay the extra money. What could happen is when the poll closes, a skeleton staff should remain with the ballot boxes and scrutineers and the rest should go home or on a break and come back when counting begins at the same time across the country.

Alternately, you do the count across the country in effective lockup like we do for federal budgets and release the information as soon as the polls are closed. This one is easier and cheaper and most results would come instantly when polls close from the east. Yes, BC would still be countring but not voting.

Yes, it is a late night in parts of the country. Small price to pay.

I just learned that after the 2015 election the black-out on reporting results was lifted by Elections Canada, not because of their budget (or so they said) but because they couldn't control social media.

Yeah they said that.

Not true.

You control social media when it comes to results simply by not releasing them as I said above or by not having them yet as I said above.

Central Canada made the decision to reject staying up later to allow a fair election in the west. Why tart this up to be anything else?

I lived in the Atlantic provinces for 26 years.  Results were broadcast on local radio and local TV after the polls closed, but blacked out in the rest of the country until the polls closed there.  I had a friend in BC who always asked me to keep her posted on the results.  In fact, she asked me this year but I told her it wouldn't  be necessary.

I don't know what they did west of the Maritimes, but that's how it worked in the Maritimes and NL.

That is what cannot be controlled with social media. So now the option is to delay the count or delay releasing any results from the polling locations.

It is insulting that this is not being done.
