I mean, come on people! It's time to throw a "Conrad's Getting a serving of Kick-ass" party! Or at least time to be petty, smug and derisive. Tomato, tomahto....

quote:
Black stands accused of spearheading an alleged fraud of more than $80 million (U.S.) at Hollinger International Inc., a Chicago-based publisher that at one time was the world's third-largest publisher of English newspapers. He faces 101 years in prison if convicted on all counts, but has denied the charges, which have not been proven in court.

101 years?!?! That'll teach him!

The latest as of today"s Star:

quote: Black, 62, arrived in the courtroom at about 8:30 a.m. yesterday dressed in a light-blue suit with a light-blue French-cuffed shirt and yellow tie.

As he stood waiting for the first jury pool to arrive, his daughter Alana Black — his child from his first marriage — walked up behind him and smoothed a few strands of his hair that were sticking up.

Wearing a brown herringbone suit with a black turtleneck sweater and a necklace made of polished stone, Barbara Amiel Black sat directly behind him with Black's daughter.

As they used to say at the closing of CHUM radio news every morning, "Now you're up to date".

Wow, thanks oldgoat. I don't think I could have gone on with the rest of my day not knowing how nattily Conrad and the family were attired.

And what's with Barbara being called "Barbara Amiel Black"? Like, wtf?

polished stone might actually be a good description of Mrs. Black's heart.

That media report sounds like its about Conrad Black's 'threads'. To be fair some media outlets I have seen have reported on the class issues of the trial. There has been some interesting and serious discussion about the makeup of the jury concentrating on their work and economic backgrounds. I am just waiting for someone to get confused and report that the Lord is on trial in Chicago.

What I find sad however is he will never be tried for the real crime against canadian society that him and Rat-boy committed. They made their initial fortunes by buying up community papers and firing most of the staff. They gutted the journalistic integrity of most of Canada's small town papers before moving to bigger papers. That to me was their biggest crime.

But if they can only get sent to jail for stealing money from other capitalists then so be it thow the book at them.

Is this a Conrad Black thread?

Or is it a thread about why there is no Conrad Black thread?

Could a moderator please clarify?

If he goes to jail for life, will that be the end of Conrad Black threads?

If Black goes to the Big House (and I doubt that he will) his 'threads' will be orange coveralls. Not what the Lord of Crossharbour is used to.

Barbara Amiel, a journalist herself, lashes out at media covering trial

quote:This is what she said: "You are all vermin."...

Amiel, just seconds before the doors closed..said "slut"

This is just unnecessary, but since we've already started with the schadenfrede..

What a horrible couple. I wish we could keep them out of Canada for good.

There's a real easy way to do that: raise corporate taxes.

Oh, and reject the Black's application to the Empire Club.

Our dedicated journalists (whom Barbara Amiel calls "vermin") need to keep up their attack. Did you see the TO Star article by Rosie DiManno? Holy cow.

Yeah. BCG posted it above (unless that's what you were referring to).

Kind of sexist, but I can forgive anything for that last line:

Okay, first of all, quelar linked to the Rosie article, not me. I would never talk about or link to Rosie Dimanno because I hate Rosie Dimanno.

For the record, I read the Rosie article and had huge problems with it, for its overwhelming and gross misogyny not to mention ageism. I don't defend Barbara in any way, of course, but cheap shots at her sexuality and her looks are not okay.

I will admit to making an unkind remark on another thread about her and a broomstick, and I really shouldn't have. I officially apologize for my cheap shot (hey, I'm not perfect).

IMO there are so many other legitimate ways to poke at Barbara and Conrad, like their grotesque lifestyle, general thievery, and social-climbing nastiness. I don't think we have to stoop to garden-variety sexism, do we?

Very true in all regards. If you look at all the comments posted, I don't think anyone was very comfortable with her brutal tone. However I don't think anyone wants to jump to the defense of a social climbing uber rich wife of that greedy thief of a capitalist*.

Holy. I must have been half asleep. Because I honestly thought it was you who posted it when I read it. And I remember being surprised, and thinking, "Gee, that seems kind of sexist for bcg's tastes."

I should have realized it would be a cold day in hell before I'd get offended at sexism in an article that you had posted.

The article sucks and it's sexist, but I have to admit, the last line made me howl. Because it's true. Babs is kind of like Rachel Marsden, in that she has really worked the "gorgeous sex kitten" thing, and scorns any kind of "politically correct" attempts to curb that sort of sexism. So while I thought the rest of the article was nasty because Rosie seems to be picking on her for being old and not looking as youthful as she once did, I thought the last line was a bit different. It's a "live by the hooters, die by the hooters" sort of sentiment.

Egads, of course not! Why do think I started this thread in the first place? To be mean and petty and gloating of course, to people who deserve it from their horrible actions and lifestyles.

P.S. Alledged, alledged, jeebus cripes I have to protect myself from any libel suits!

Um, who's Rachel Marsden?

Did I get the name wrong?

Phew, no I didn't. She's a right-wing neocon commentator whose early claims-to-fame include stalking a professor and making false sexual assault (or was it harassment?) claims about him. Her current claim to fame is being a neocon sex kitten, featured on US republican "babe" sites. Oh, and I think she has a column in the National Post, much to the chagrin of the real journalists there.
