babble is rabble.ca's discussion board but it's much more than that: it's an online community for folks who just won't shut up. It's a place to tell each other — and the world — what's up with our work and campaigns.
She told me the same thing just now. (She seemed to think I knew you, mimeguy!)
I pressed her on it, though, and told her that this woman might not even know she's being stalked because she's possibly homeless, clearly living in poverty and likely doesn't have internet access, and this is an issue of 700 people in the community organizing a stalking crusade on the internet.
She said I should send the information to Mr. Martiniuk and he'll take a look at it. Likely since I'm not in the riding, he won't even care.
He'll care if it makes the papers, though! Especially if the reporter interviews people like us, and we say that we were brushed off by his office.
First, having just returned from vacation, most of my time is spoken for this week. So, for now, I'm not able to do much more than I've already done (complain to Facebook, send an e-mail to a reporter that I know).
In addition, I thought I should explain that Waterloo Regional Police are a Regional Service in a two-tier municipality. So, while the mayors of the cities do sit on Regional Council as well, I would recommend that you focus on contacting politicians whose focus is solely at the Regional level. In particular, Police Services Board Chair Tom Galloway and Regional Chair Ken Seiling.
Hope you two are keeping notes or something! Never know when a mainstream or alternative media source will do an embarrassing expose. Or some columnist or other might pick this up, with some help.
Thanks and very good everyone. I also spoke to the provincial ndp rep who tells me that there isn't a candidate yet but that she believed the riding association was aware of the group. She herself is a member of the counter group. Excellent. On to the liberals and greens. (I'm a green so I'm going to try and get the local riding association to make some noise.)
My journalist friends have passed this along to their editors. I don't know anyone working in the Cambridge area, but others working for wire services and dailies in southern Ontario said may use this case in larger stories about Facebook policing and organized stalking. They seemed interested, let's hope their editors feel the same way. It's good to hear others are putting pressure on politicians and the police.
Coincidentally, Goodyear was just quoted in a front page article on the political uses of Facebook (which included some great coverage for our local NDP candidate). He said, and I quote, "I don't have time to play on the internet."
I just received an email response from Inspector Barry Zehr which says their detective branch is investigating. This is the police contact I sent the email to on Friday night.

This has been posted on the offending site recently. Posted by Cory Buckwell the admin for the group.

Scott said on a message on the opposing site the forum was now gone so... perhaps it is, as the nasties are ugly on the opposing site from those from the horrid site.
Justin Bernard left the group at least an hour before it was shut down. And then Cory Buckwell wrote that panicky post about how he was getting all these calls from the police and the media, and television crews and everything!
I couldn't help but laugh - gee, how does it feel to get all that unwanted attention from people with cameras?

Apparently, Cory Buckwell has also removed the video clip from youtube now too.
Great point Michelle, it seems they do not like it once the tables are turned upon them.
Even if the woman doesn't know about the facebook group, she certainly knows about being harassed, so I think the point is moot. There are plenty of pictures of her with her hand in front of the camera, or obviously trying to evade the stalkers. It's sickening.
I wish I felt that these assholes were going to learn anything from this.

They just might, one of the misguided youth named his place of work to bash her in quite a nasty manner.
Their phone number is up there now for people to call them about his using of their name. Though he is running scared now and removed his offending post, but not before a screen shot was taken.

That annoyed me. I'm solidly "Other".
It looks like Facebook has deleted this nasty group - at least I couldn't access it.
Hopefully it's deleted and not hidden. Unfortunately some of the stalkers are now flooding the counter group with horrible, hateful comments. I think I've been living in a bubble. I cannot believe so many people would engage in this sort of behaviour. Thankfully the people who united to try to stop it sort of restore my faith in humanity.
Facebook is a huge business and their inability or, more likely, indifference to this group is shameful. All the more so since they crack down on things like breast-feeding. The owners of that site have strange priorities.
I really hope, if nothing else, the police and the media put such a scare in these kids that they think twice before doing anything like this again. It might be too much to hope they actually come to realize why what they did is so unacceptable, but the unwanted attention they receive will hopefully send a message to them and anyone else thinking of some similar stunt to smarten up.
quote: I was interviewed by CTV's Nicole Lampa today, and it should air either on the 6 o'clock or 11 o'clock news. Unfortunately, it will only air on the local news, but if you live in the K-W region, be sure to watch! (Hopefully I didn't look like an idiot, haha.)
R. Johnson
there is a chance R. Johnson's interview is on as I type this.
A small victory, then. The great victory will be, of course, when we can make a world where the Obeebas get the help and support they need to get out of the hell their lives must be even without Facebook stalkers.
But that'll take awhile, since you can't get elected as a Tory or a Republican by supporting the creation of that sort of world.
Congratulations to those who led the fight against the haters.
For those of you who get CTV News in the Kitchener and London area, there was apparently something on at 6 tonight and it will probably be on at 11 again. So watch! (And if you can record it and upload it, I'd love to see it!)
Coward. I think it's time to flood his phone lines with calls.

yay!
I'd love to know for sure from Facebook.
I wonder if this woman in Cambridge even knows about this whole mess?
