A Point Form and Bit of Background on Pending Land Claims in Ontario.

This is about half of the Ontario claims on the province alone, doesn't count federal claims. (eg, Tyendinaga/Desoronto
This just cannot go on much longer.
The province and the municipalities just go ahead with resource and development plans regardless of outstanding provincial and federal land disputes. ERGO ... Six Nations/Caledonia, Tendinaga/Desoronto, and many more to come.

I somehow cannot see Ontario meekly giving up Algonquin Park and most of the Ottawa Valley overnight - not to mention many of the other claims...
...And if they do, take a look at what happened when they "settled" the Algonquin FN's Cobalt Claims in '98...Overnight, about 50 mining companies muscled in and took over completely!!!
As usual, they will hemm and haw and do nothing but bounce FNs between the Province, the Courts and INAC until push comes to shove or (God forbid) someone gets hurt, or the FN case "runs out of steam" or out of money or just plain out of patience.
It just seems like the myopic policies of successive Provincial governments are just getting worse all the time (although I suppose "worse" is a very relative term, with regards to FN treatment)...
Do they not realize that the cost to the Province for all of this is JUST NOT going to decrease over time???
The irony is that if Canada had settled these claims decades ago, they probably wouldn't have had to give up the land. However, now that the effects of the residential schools are receding, aboriginal people are the fastest growing demographic in Canada and they need land for their descendants. They also are not amused by the way Canada cares for the land and environment, so now it will be all about the land.
I see no reason why Algonquin Park has to be operated by the province.
