On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

http://toronto.mediacoop.ca/node/3883

Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.
Frederick Douglass, 1857

This page grows out of dialogue with many community members between the Vancouver Olympics in February and the Toronto G8/G20 in June. It needs saying.

Oil spill tourism losses may be denied, says BP oil claims chief

On day 72 of the disaster Thursday, the oil spill within the Gulf of Mexico 2010 became the worst oil spill ever within the region. Hurricane Alex put a halt to cleanup efforts this week and pushed oil further onto shore. The booming tourism expected on the Gulf coast as the Fourth of July holiday weekend approaches is virtually non-existent. What's more, the government overseer of BP's oil spill claim program said oil spill tourism losses might not qualify. The oil spill cap remains in place despite heavy winds and waves, but only a quarter of the crude gushing into the sea is being collected.

Cash For Gold Scams Rise, Stock Market Tanks, Cash F Or Gold Scams Soar

The gold market has been where the action is for investors lately. As a neurotic stock market and the European debt crisis spur predictions of a global financial meltdown, a vault full of gold is like a dose of Valium for stressed out investors. Investors fear continued to drive stocks lower when the spot gold price began at a lot more than $ 1,200 per ounce on Wednesday. Gold is wanted by European investors and banks as the Euro tanks and also the dollar flutters. Investment gurus like Richard Russell are telling individuals to stay away from the stock market and buy gold stocks instead.

TAX the BANKS

It's time to tax the banks.

A campaign is already underway in the U.K. (see http://robinhoodtax.org.uk/) and some version of the idea has even been proposed by the IMF, strange as that may sound. You may have heard the news recently, with Finance Minister Flaherty going public with his veto on the idea:

Seems to me that this should be a no-brainer, as a campaign that can lift with wings...

Detroit high school students can now earn an A in Wal-Mart

I want to say this is bad but I have this nagging feeling that it might just be realism on the part of the school board.

Four inner-city Detroit high schools have decided that employment with Walmart is an opportunity worth training their students to pursue. The schools have teamed up with the giant merchandiser to offer a for-credit class in job-readiness training that also includes entry-level after-school jobs.

Trash intellectual property law?

It's a radical idea but the implications are worth thinking about. It could well stimulate innovation rather than prevent it. Certainly it's well past time to reconsider the lengths of copyright and patent. What author really needs their creation protected 70 years after their death? A long patent might make some sense for inventions that require a lot of investment before they can be sold, like drugs, but does it really make so much sense for those that will be obsolete long before a decade is up?

Why you can't expect this government do anything right- it is about priorities

The issues are being addressed as if they are economic when they aren't-- they are political.

Looking at this from a fiscal and economic point of view, the last time Canada faced a deficit problem the dollar was too low and interest rates too high. This encourages a tighter fiscal policy that makes it difficult to address weaknesses in the economy. Today the dollar is too high and interest rates are at record lows. I assume therefore that we ought to be able to print some more money which would allow the dollar to drop. A short term solution but not ineffective.

Ontario Budget

I haven't seen another thread on this issue... If I missed it I apologise.

I look forward to reading people comments. Obviously the first thing leaked was the Harmonization of the PST and GST.

This is going over like a lead balloon.
