Leona Aglukkaq - Using Northern Background as Shield Against Environmental Attacks. Says Polar Bear NOT Disappearing!

Brand new Liberal Northern Development Critic Yvonne Jones gave a press conference yesterday. A reporter asked Jones about Aglukkaq using her Northern background a 'shield' against attacks from Environmental critics. The same way she used it against the UN special rapporteur on the right to food.

Everytime she gets attacked from Environmental critcs, she'll respond that she resents being told how to fix things by an outsider who has no first-hand knowledge of the North.

Says Leona “It’s about fighting environmentalists that try to put a stop to our way of life, of hunting to provide for our families,” she said.

Canada New Environment Minister Leona Aqlukkaq Says The North is Wide Open To Big Business!

“As a northerner, I want to say — first and foremost — that people in the North want development,” said Leona Aglukkaq, emphatically. “We want it!”

“You know, we talk about this as an area that is developing – Canada’s North is developing, the Arctic region of every country’s developing. But it’s the private sector that’s actually going to develop those regions — not scientists.”

Aglukkaq’s gung-ho stance on declaring the Arctic open for business is sure to unsettle many expert observers of the region, the focus of countless conservation campaigns around the world and widely seen as the prime planetary symbol of ecosystem-jarring climate change.

Hot enough for ya? Environmentally friendly tips on staying cool

Summer's here and for those in southern Canada and occassionaly the city of Vancouver the means it is hot hot hot!

While most people in Vancouver, when they do experience some heat, can either open the door for a nice cool breeze or take a dip in the ocean, others of us aren't so lucky.

Concrete and somewhat landlocked Toronto -- ya dying in the heat! Winnipeg?! -- I can't even.

We got to talking at rabble.ca and due to my incessant complaining about heat down here in the southern USA (seriously, it's like 30+ here everyday. at night. Plus humidity. plus blazing sun. that makes it about 75. Celsius.) we thought we'd reach out to see if anyone has any tips for staying cool in the summer while being friendly to the earth.

Investment tip: Green Energy

Been seeing a lot of folks posting about how green energy is a joke - big oil is king and always will be.  Green energy will never meet all of our needs.  Thought I would share a reply.

Green energy is in its infancy, so don't discount it.   Those who trumpet the continued viability of fossil fuels are like those 100 years ago saying that automobiles would never catch on.  Too clunky, too noisy, and prone to breakdowns - you practically had to be an engineer to drive one.

Who here is still supporting CO2 as a driver of Climate change?

HI Everyone!

I was just wondering how many people here are still supporting the idea of reducing CO2 output to help stabilize the climate, in light of this graph prepared by Dr. Roy Spencer:

(Posting is here:  http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/06/06/climate-modeling-epic-fail-spencer-the-day-of-reckoning-has-arrived/)

What becomes clear is that even though CO2 has increased and every model used by the IPCC to model our climate shows an increase in climate temperature, the real-life ovservations don't match any of these models.  The Obseved climate is a flat-line since 1975, and every model is substantially wrong.

Montreal boil-water advisory

Nothing dramatic so far, but someone messed up, and this is an inconvenience and expense.

Most Montrealers are being told they must boil their water before drinking it, a precaution after sediment was found in the water following renovations to a city reservoir.

Officials will be testing the water to make sure there is no dangerous bacteria in the sediment.

City officials have issued a boil water advisory covering all areas east of, and including, LaSalle.
