Why Doesn't Mountain Equipment Co-op Really Support the Environment

Over a year ago I encouraged MEC to adopt a concept that would raise more $$$ by far for environmental organizations throughout Canada, than any other effort.

At this writing, one of Canada's largest corporations is considering the concept for ALL of Canada's charities. A humongous granting foundation in the US is considering the implementationn for hundreds of charities in Canada, US and UK and a major US corporation is considering the implementation for hundreds of charities.

Does MEC have a problem?

Film Links: Save the Salish Sea Burrard Inlet

Salish Sea Burrard Inlet, a jewel in our midst on the West Coast, inspired a local independent filmmaker to make a short documentary film that reaches back into the memory of the 1973 oil spill in the outer harbour, shows the inlet as it is today with both canoes and tankers on its waters, and imagines a possible better future for all of us.

Racist Decision By Manitoba to Flood FN Lands in 2011

Lake St. Martin is now more a ghost town than what was once home to more than 1,400 people. The community was forced to leave abruptly in May of 2011 when Manitoba decided to spare Winnipeg from the effects of the “superflood” – the largest spring runoff in provincial history – by diverting water into several northern native centres.

Win! Company gives up plans for Mega Quarry

CTV reports:

"Acknowledging widespread public opposition, the company behind a proposed mega-quarry at a site north of Toronto has backed down. In a statement released Wednesday, the Highland Companies announced it was withdrawing its request to develop the project in Melancthon Township, near Orangeville, Ont. While we believe that the quarry would have brought significant economic benefit to Melancthon Township and served Ontario's well-documented need for aggregate, we acknowledge that the application does not have sufficient support from the community and government to justify proceeding with the approval process," Highland's John Scherer said."
