Les animaux ne sont pas des choses/Animals are not objects

A manifesto for the evolution of the status of (non-human) animals in the Québec Civil Code, based on changes in several European legal codes.

Like most people, we believe that animals are not toasters. This view, however, is not shared by our Civil Code. From a legal standpoint, a dog or a cow is no different than a toaster or a chair: all are considered moveable property. Quebec law thus assimilates the act of hurting or abusing an animal to the destruction of property. Not only is this concept morally questionable, but it also clashes with how the majority of Quebec citizens think.

Liberal political commentator Rob Silver mentions rabble.ca twice on CBC Power & Politics

Sean Devlin and Shireen Soofi, with the help of Brigette DePape managed to disrupt a Stephen Harper Q&A in Vancover. They were protesting pipelines.

Sean Devlin and Brigette DePape later appeared CBC Power & Politics to discuss the protest.

Later on the Power Panel segment Liberal political commentator Rob Silver said those two do nothing to get the anti-pipeline message across, that they hurt the cause not help.

He also said, not once but twice, that their message only appeals to people who read rabble.ca daily.

Why the timing is good for parties from the left in Canada

Let me start by saying that what I am saying applies to the NDP as it is the only large political party on the left. But it can be true for other parties on the left that are smaller. We should not assume exclusivity to the NDP and if it ceases to be a party of activism (as it has at times provincially) it will not apply to the NDP.

This does not apply to non-activist parties of the centre or the centre-right such as the Liberals or parties of the right.

Canada is experiencing a painful lesson that is slowly becoming clear to the public. A rising tide does not raise all boats at all. The economic performance of the country has increased this country's total wealth dramatically while the living standards of most Canadians are seeing no benefit.
