The missing and murdered women of Vancouver

http://rabble.ca/news/2010/08/missing-and-murdered-women-vancouver-deser...

Quote:
I remember in 1999, as a federal MP, raising the issue at my first meeting with the then Attorney General of Canada Martin Cauchon. I asked him: "What would you do if you had 57 women who were missing and presumed murdered in your community? Well, that's what's happening in the Downtown Eastside."

He seemed taken aback, and I don't think he really knew anything about what should have been a national concern.

It's so shocking to me that if it was any other identifiable group, like nurses, or students from the University of British Columbia, there would have been a national outcry and a much different response.

Advocacy group plans to file health and safety complaint against Flynt Publications (California)

Quote:

An advocacy group that has been campaigning for more government protections for porn performers plans to file a complaint Thursday against mega-producer Larry Flynt Publications, publisher of Hustler.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a Los Angeles-based group that has advocated for condom use and increased testing among porn performers, plans to file a worker safety complaint with the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The group takes issue with film shoots that depict sexual acts without condom usage, which the group said is unsafe and potentially life-threatening.

The group plans to submit 100 adult entertainment DVDs along with their complaint to the state agency.

Hijab: Culture, Custom, and Chaos

Quote:

In my life, first as a young woman who had not yet chosen Islam, I have dressed with a dress so short, I had to keep standing if I wanted to keep my underwear covered. Then I chose to cover only in long dresses or slacks and to wear some kind of scarf or wrap over my hair. This was long before I first began reading about Islam and before I entered into a mosque. My ancestors, including my Muslim ancestors, came to America as slaves. The women were stripped at the auction block with no choice about how to cover themselves. I just decided that the right to exercise some control over who saw my legs was just as empowering as the other way around in some other context.

Rio prostitutes fret over facelift for World Cup and Olympics

Quote:
Outside, an autumn chill descended on Vila Mimosa's main street – Rua Sotero dos Reis – and rain hammered down onto a sign promising "streeptease". Inside, hundreds of drunken men packed this sprawling warren of brothels and bars for another evening of shouted conversations and fleeting encounters with the 3,500 or so local prostitutes.

But the rowdy 24-hour parties that have made this labyrinth of excess notorious across Brazil may soon fall silent, as Rio de Janeiro prepares for a multi-billion dollar facelift in the run up to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Montreal International Women's Conference: 13-16 August 2010

Quote:

13-16 August, Montreal
Montreal International Women's Conference
for a global militant women's movement in the 21st century

Women from five continents will gather in Montreal August 13-16, 2010 to discuss building a global militant women' s movement in the 21st century! The conference will culminate in the formation of an International Women's Alliance.

We have much to learn from each other, much to share: analyses, experiences of struggle and resistance, victories large and small. And we have 100 years of experience of the modern women's movement to draw from.

Topics that will be covered in presentation and workshops:

New Version: On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

Ok all you babblers,

I have heard from many people who read the original version of this piece. In response to all your thoughts, I significantly reworked it to include new ideas that people shared with me and to clarify the most important ways we need to build solidarity right now.

Given the ongoing need for unity as we continue to work to get our friends out of jail, get all the charges dropped, and build the movement from within, seems like a good time to post this new and updated version.

Don't Rape, Part 2 — Why women don't report sexual assault

The intent of this thread is that it be a discussion between feminist-identified women. Many thanks.

Quote:

Laura didn’t report her rape.

A few days later, when she couldn’t handle her feelings by herself anymore, she called her mom.

“I got sexually abused,” she said, sobbing, and told the whole story.

“Well you’re fucking stupid,” her mom said. “What do you expect, letting a boy into your house. What, do you think you’re a slut?”

On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

http://toronto.mediacoop.ca/node/3883

Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.
Frederick Douglass, 1857

This page grows out of dialogue with many community members between the Vancouver Olympics in February and the Toronto G8/G20 in June. It needs saying.

Gender Apartheid in Saudi Arabia - and King Abdullah's Upcoming Visit to the United States

Tomorrow King Abdullah of the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia visits US President Barak Obama. The number one issue that ought to be discussed? It's not oil - but human rights. While Canadian Nathalie Morin and her three children suffer at the abuse of her commonlaw husband, in the tiny town of Bisha, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper does nothing. While Sawsan Salim sits in a Saudi prison with her toddler son, awaiting 300 lashes for attending a government office without a male guardian, Human Rights Watch pleads for an appeal.
