WHY was the Sudbury Women's Centre des Femmes (SWC) CLOSED?

Why is the Sudbury Women's Centre (SWC) Closed? ...

It's a sad day in the voluntary sector -- when a handful of women --- can continue to operate without openness and transparency, in violation of policy and procedures (not to mention labour laws) and an apparent disregard for feminist practices, the SWC Collective, and the women they serve in the community,

... and when they can close down a Women's Centre, change the locks, cancel the AGM, and lockout workers (of 19 yrs & 13 yrs)  as they have in Sudbury.

Sex-lies and videotape

The media is creating a debate regarding the online defamation laws - but what about the bigger picture -the actual act of betrayal and fraud online as well as the issue that though this is almost an everyday occurence;  few victims report these kind of crimes because they know that no action will be taken against these perpetrators by the police. So if they can't  expose the person and warn other women on the internet dating sites-what course of action is left for them to take? Should they just let it go and let the next woman fall prey to the perp?

Should the media not focus on it as well?

Urgent Action Needed: Nellie's Shelter: Help Lucy Kim

Quote:

If Lucy Kim returns to her abusive husband, she will most surely be killed. This is what the Provincial courts have mandated her to do -to return to Timmins from where she has fled for her life -in order to attend court for custody of her two children.

Lucy Kim arrived at Nellie's Women's Shelter last month fleeing for her life. After coming to Canada 3 years ago as an immigrant from China, Lucy found herself in an abusive relationship and in constant fear for her safety. Lucy's husband has already been charged with assault against her, as well as being in illegal possession of firearms.

Womens Rights affected by global food policies.

Great interview from Democracy Now!:

"Whether in Pakistan or in Mozambique, we know that 60 percent of the people going hungry today are women or girls. And the United Nations has observed that in a range of countries where massive climatic disasters have been recorded and the impacts followed up, we know that women bear the brunt of these kinds of events."

The missing and murdered women of Vancouver

http://rabble.ca/news/2010/08/missing-and-murdered-women-vancouver-deser...

Quote:
I remember in 1999, as a federal MP, raising the issue at my first meeting with the then Attorney General of Canada Martin Cauchon. I asked him: "What would you do if you had 57 women who were missing and presumed murdered in your community? Well, that's what's happening in the Downtown Eastside."

He seemed taken aback, and I don't think he really knew anything about what should have been a national concern.

It's so shocking to me that if it was any other identifiable group, like nurses, or students from the University of British Columbia, there would have been a national outcry and a much different response.

Advocacy group plans to file health and safety complaint against Flynt Publications (California)

Quote:

An advocacy group that has been campaigning for more government protections for porn performers plans to file a complaint Thursday against mega-producer Larry Flynt Publications, publisher of Hustler.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a Los Angeles-based group that has advocated for condom use and increased testing among porn performers, plans to file a worker safety complaint with the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The group takes issue with film shoots that depict sexual acts without condom usage, which the group said is unsafe and potentially life-threatening.

The group plans to submit 100 adult entertainment DVDs along with their complaint to the state agency.

Hijab: Culture, Custom, and Chaos

Quote:

In my life, first as a young woman who had not yet chosen Islam, I have dressed with a dress so short, I had to keep standing if I wanted to keep my underwear covered. Then I chose to cover only in long dresses or slacks and to wear some kind of scarf or wrap over my hair. This was long before I first began reading about Islam and before I entered into a mosque. My ancestors, including my Muslim ancestors, came to America as slaves. The women were stripped at the auction block with no choice about how to cover themselves. I just decided that the right to exercise some control over who saw my legs was just as empowering as the other way around in some other context.

Rio prostitutes fret over facelift for World Cup and Olympics

Quote:
Outside, an autumn chill descended on Vila Mimosa's main street – Rua Sotero dos Reis – and rain hammered down onto a sign promising "streeptease". Inside, hundreds of drunken men packed this sprawling warren of brothels and bars for another evening of shouted conversations and fleeting encounters with the 3,500 or so local prostitutes.

But the rowdy 24-hour parties that have made this labyrinth of excess notorious across Brazil may soon fall silent, as Rio de Janeiro prepares for a multi-billion dollar facelift in the run up to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Montreal International Women's Conference
for a global militant women's movement in the 21st century

Women from five continents will gather in Montreal August 13-16, 2010 to discuss building a global militant women' s movement in the 21st century! The conference will culminate in the formation of an International Women's Alliance.

We have much to learn from each other, much to share: analyses, experiences of struggle and resistance, victories large and small. And we have 100 years of experience of the modern women's movement to draw from.

Topics that will be covered in presentation and workshops:

New Version: On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

Ok all you babblers,

I have heard from many people who read the original version of this piece. In response to all your thoughts, I significantly reworked it to include new ideas that people shared with me and to clarify the most important ways we need to build solidarity right now.

Given the ongoing need for unity as we continue to work to get our friends out of jail, get all the charges dropped, and build the movement from within, seems like a good time to post this new and updated version.
