Moments of Excess: Essential reading for Occupy and Quebec student activists

As attention turns toward the mass student strike on the streets of Montreal, ongoing for three months, the Quebec student movement clearly exemplifies the power that activism holds to shape our collective imagination.

<itunes:summary>Friday April 27th 2012 - This Smash the State Report starts off with info on the re-opening of the abortion debate in Canada, then jumps into the Quebec Student strike with a critique from Stefan Christoff of Mainstream coverage, before an update of the April 28th Walk for Peace Respect and Friendship . We also introduce the discuss the Yinka-Dene alliance, their Freedom Train, and the resistance to the Northern Gateway Pipeline, look into the crackdown on Dr. Seuss in BC, the continuing censorship of federal government environmental scientists, and the gutting of the canadian environmental assessment act.

We then look at the the attack on Indigenous in the Amazon by loggers, the gathering of 40,000 Norwegians against fascist racism, then two stories on Canada's increasingly racist and restrictive immigration and refugee system. The first is the story of a mexican refugee claimant who was deported to Mexico from Canada last year and later murdered. The second is of the targetting of Roma refugee claimants from so-called "safe countries" in Europe for rejection.

Finally, we discuss the ontario NDP saving the provincial budget by selling out the poor, federal bureaucrats living in luxury, and we finish with a tie for the "taze of the week" between the arrest of a 6 year old at school, and a search of a 4 year old at an airport for hugging her mom.

And this show finishes up with the announcement of Julian Ichim's 4 million dollar lawsuit against the toronto police and others for the political policing undertaken against anti-poverty, anti-capitalist, and anti-G20 organisers, including himself. check http://julianichim.wordpress.com for more info

- Check http://april28.net for more information about the upcoming rally, walk and community celebration in Caledonia and @Kanonhstaton, Southern Ontario.

Bored but not broken: April 1 update

April 1 2012

Hi everyone,

So it seems there's been a bit of a hold up with the blog, and that it has been causing a bit of stress. Don't worry! Everything is still fine -- I have just run into a logistical snag with the mail system here. I dictated this post over the phone.

On March 11 I sent out my 9th post, entitled Women, the Police and International Days, but it was never put in the mail. I know this because on march 23 I was given a large stack of letters -- some of them had been received by the jail at the end of February! and a couple of them were addressed to Leah -- and there it was. So I sent it out again on march 23. I assumed it was an honest mistake, however as of today Ali still hasn't received it.

Bored but not broken: The many faces of Vanier

A few weeks ago I wrote about the overly scheduled and tedious days here. For the most part every day is the same, but every so often little things happen. This post is a look at the more random events of the past few days -- the good, the weird, the completely fucked up. Behold the many faces of Vanier!

February 23

As I write this we are locked down because a new 32 inch flat screen TV is being installed on the range. It seems like a strange thing to spend money on for various reasons, among them:

Fwd text:

"Call For Court Support Fuck Remorse, Smash The State I will always be a revolutionary!!!!
Feb 8th 8:30 am Front Steps of Old City Hall
Rally in Defense of our politics and for Political status!!!
Bring Flags, banners and symbols of our politics!!!

On Feb. 8th, once again I am called to bow my head in fear and approuch the court of her Majesty cowering at the power and might of the state with fear in my heart.
Smash the State Report: Bill C-10, CETA and decolonizing Occupy

The show starts with a Smash the State report looking into a slightly confused report about a neo-Nazi attack in Vancouver (check http://van-noii.resist.ca for a statement and more accurate report), the cost of #omnibus imprisonment bill #c10, an action against the Canada-EU trade deal (CETA), John Baird's hypocrisy and more. We are also saddened to announce the passing of long-term street warrior Ricky Lavaille, a Vancouver #DTES resident. From KW Spot Collective:
Given the fact that it has come to light that many people who were targeted for surveillance, infiltration and attack by the state around the g20 were done so for holding a “criminal ideology”, given that the organizations that were targeted were political organizations, and given that arrests are still being made around people who are political for speaking about there experience as victims of state attack, whose aims are to silence dissent, The Spot Collective is calling on all people to call or email the office of the Attorney general and demand political status for all g20 arrestees, as well as all other people in jail for political reasons and by doing so admit that Canada has political prisoners and act accordingly. Furthermore we are calling on people to demand that the Attorney General end the political persecution, incarceration, surveillance and criminalisation of protest, ideology and dissent.

Criminal charges against Montrealer who filmed undercover police at Montreal G20 protest to be heard in court

Montreal -- The trial of a Montreal man who was arrested after taking photos of undercover police will be heard in court later this week. Scott Weinstein was arrested on July 1, 2010, during a Montreal march denouncing mass arrests at the Toronto G20 protests. Julius Grey will appear for the defence in what promises to be an important political trial.

Weinstein left the march to take a video of a group of undercover police officers, who were described as "scary-looking" by another videographer. The undercover officers had earlier attempted to enter the march, only to be repulsed by watchful activists concerned about potential violence by police provocateurs. When Weinstein approached the undercovers, they were walking as a group in a street parallel to the march.

Bored but not broken: Ten days down, 314 to go

It's Sunday, Jan. 22 and this is my 10th day. So far things are going well, there haven't been any problems and I have no regrets about my decision to do this time.

Since I got here I've been taking it easy and learning the lay of the land -- which hasn't been very complicated since I'm in Unit 2F, the same one I was in while waiting for bail. Not much has changed since the summer of 2010 -- just some little things, like now we get compostable "ecotainer" cups instead of styrofoam, and instead of real soy milk there's this horrible "Smart Milk" non-dairy milk replacement powder.

A 174-page report by the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) released on Friday January 20, 2012, recommended that five Toronto police officers should face criminal charges for using unnecessary force against activist Adam Nobody.

The recommendations from OIPRD were based on interviews with a dozen police witnesses, the five officers involved, five civilian witnesses and Adam Nobody himself.

Activist Communique: The legendary Mandy Hiscocks

News of Hiscock's court sentence of 16 months for G20-related conspiracy charges spread through Twitter with the hashtag #TheLegendaryMandyHiscocks.

Her new blog -- "bored but not broken" -- which will chronical her life "on the inside" is being hosted on rabble.ca. In her introduction, she writes: "my name is mandy hiscocks, and i expect to spend most of 2012 in jail for my participation in organizing the protests against the G20 leaders summit in toronto in the summer of 2010. this blog is for me to communicate with you while i'm locked up. ideally, this will take some of the pressure off of my friends and family. i'll also share useful information about jail and the criminal 'justice' system, as well as stories from the inside."

Mandy Hiscocks: Welcome to the next year of my life

Today is Monday, Jan. 16 and this is my first written dispatch from jail. It feels strange to write with paper and these little golf-sized pencils we get (no pens allowed) -- it feels a bit like high school all over again. It also feels weird to write about what I've been doing the last few days, it's so mundane that I wonder how it can possibly be interesting. But one of the main ideas behind these dispatches is to share this experience, which is what it is, so here goes!

Lots has happened since I got to unit 2F last Friday, but for today I want to tell you what happened before I got here.
