Gitxsan remain divided

Opponents of the Gitxsan Treaty Society spent Monday preparing themselves for arrest. For much of the day, Gitxsan community members crowded at one end of Omineca Street before the Gitxsan Treaty Society offices while police assembled a block away.

The day had a strange character. A hot, sunny day in the north, people set up lawn chairs, visited friends and family, and wandered down the block to buy ice cream. Children played on the sidewalk, while elders sat and talked. However, beneath the conviviality of community life lay deep-seated tensions.

Enbridge rally, Freedom Train 2012

I went to a demonstration yesterday, one that started April 30 in Jasper AB, but wound up here in Toronto in front of the King Eddie hotel. The annual Enbridge shareholders meeting was underway.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enbridge:

"Using data from Enbridge's own reports, the Polaris Institute calculated that 804 spills occurred on Enbridge pipelines between 1999 and 2010. These spills released approximately 168,645 barrels (26,812.4 m3) of hydrocarbons into the environment."

A concern about the social and environmental destruction caused by Canadian mining companies brought me to the fourth annual Mining Injustice Conference organized by the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network, held at the University of Toronto.

Made on Haida Gwaii: Dana Bellis brings new energy from the North

Today we introduce a new feature series: 'Made on Haida Gwaii,' by writer April Diamond Dutheil. Each week we will showcase the story of a talented young person who calls Haida Gwaii home. In this vast country, our major urban centres tend to soak up most of the attention. This collection of success stories, about young people living on these beautiful but remote islands off the Pacific coast, aims to disrupt the dominant myths of what it means to grow up in Canada’s North.

<itunes:summary>Friday April 27th 2012 - This Smash the State Report starts off with info on the re-opening of the abortion debate in Canada, then jumps into the Quebec Student strike with a critique from Stefan Christoff of Mainstream coverage, before an update of the April 28th Walk for Peace Respect and Friendship . We also introduce the discuss the Yinka-Dene alliance, their Freedom Train, and the resistance to the Northern Gateway Pipeline, look into the crackdown on Dr. Seuss in BC, the continuing censorship of federal government environmental scientists, and the gutting of the canadian environmental assessment act.

We then look at the the attack on Indigenous in the Amazon by loggers, the gathering of 40,000 Norwegians against fascist racism, then two stories on Canada's increasingly racist and restrictive immigration and refugee system. The first is the story of a mexican refugee claimant who was deported to Mexico from Canada last year and later murdered. The second is of the targetting of Roma refugee claimants from so-called "safe countries" in Europe for rejection.

Finally, we discuss the ontario NDP saving the provincial budget by selling out the poor, federal bureaucrats living in luxury, and we finish with a tie for the "taze of the week" between the arrest of a 6 year old at school, and a search of a 4 year old at an airport for hugging her mom.

And this show finishes up with the announcement of Julian Ichim's 4 million dollar lawsuit against the toronto police and others for the political policing undertaken against anti-poverty, anti-capitalist, and anti-G20 organisers, including himself. check http://julianichim.wordpress.com for more info

- Check http://april28.net for more information about the upcoming rally, walk and community celebration in Caledonia and @Kanonhstaton, Southern Ontario.

This is a weekly 2-hour radio show AW@L Radio on CKMS 100.3 http://soundfm.ca from 16:00-18:00 on Fridays.

When do First Nations children become a priority?

I have been watching and listening with interest over the last few weeks about what issues the media outlets have been featuring, as well as what federal, provincial and First Nation politicians have been speaking about. Despite the fact that some very important court rulings have come out which were in favour of First Nations peoples, they seem to have gone largely unnoticed. Similarly, there have been some pretty significant funding cuts to First Nations communities as well as various First Nations organizations, yet the political world has been all but silent on the issue.

Comox, B.C. speaks out against Northern Gateway Pipeline

Speaker after speaker poured out their passionate pleas to an impassive panel at the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline hearings in Comox, B.C., on March 30 and 31.
