More and more boomers in the street (Le Devoir)

This is a Montreal report, but I'm putting it in labour and consumption as it is an issue that goes far beyond Québec. It is very hard for workers 55 and older to find a job, and there is nothing but welfare until 65 for many. Not many people my age can successfully live with roommates... And the Marois government actually wanted to cut the welfare top-up for people between 55 and 58, saying there are jobs out there for them... http://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/montreal/201309/22/01-4692019-de-plus-...

So much for the "rich baby-boomer" stereotype. They exist, but a lot of people in late middle-age lose their jobs, and not everyone has a lot of savings.

Via Rail scrapping porters who help disabled travellers

This is disgusting. Via Rail is scrapping its "red cap" porters, who are specially trained to help travellers in wheelchairs, frail elderly people and other travellers with disabilities.

Universal access to public transport is a human right. Free public transport in one's own area, affordable public transport to make necessary trips. Grrrrrr....

A Swiss friend of mine with MS made the journey from Basel to Amsterdam to attend a conference, and was able to secure aid at both ends, before taking a low-floor tram to his final destination. There is no excuse for that not being the case here. It provides socially-useful employment as well.

Canada New Environment Minister Leona Aqlukkaq Says The North is Wide Open To Big Business!

“As a northerner, I want to say — first and foremost — that people in the North want development,” said Leona Aglukkaq, emphatically. “We want it!”

“You know, we talk about this as an area that is developing – Canada’s North is developing, the Arctic region of every country’s developing. But it’s the private sector that’s actually going to develop those regions — not scientists.”

Aglukkaq’s gung-ho stance on declaring the Arctic open for business is sure to unsettle many expert observers of the region, the focus of countless conservation campaigns around the world and widely seen as the prime planetary symbol of ecosystem-jarring climate change.
