The bodies of girlfriends Jeanine Blanchette, 21, and Chantal Dube, 17, were found in a wooded area in Orangeville on Saturday.

Gay Ontario man loses blood donation negligence suit

This one is bound for the Supreme Court!

A gay Toronto man who concealed his sexual history on a blood donor questionnaire and was sued for negligence by Canadian Blood Services has lost in Ontario Superior Court.

In a decision released Thursday, the court sided with CBS in its suit against Kyle Freeman for "negligent misrepresentation."

The court said Freeman did not have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms defence against the claim of negligence.

Gay Rights in Israel?

Contrary to the image portrayed here in the media about how gay friendly israel is, here is an example of the DEPUTY MAYOR organizing a counter demonstration to a gay rights march.

He wanted to bring live donkeys to show the "bestial" nature of gay people, but was only allowed to bring cardboard cut-outs of donkeys.

Could you imagine a government official here organizing an anti gay rights march and getting away with it?

Perhaps now QAIA can ask Bnai Brith to explain what they meant when they said Israel respects gay rights.

New Version: On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

Ok all you babblers,

I have heard from many people who read the original version of this piece. In response to all your thoughts, I significantly reworked it to include new ideas that people shared with me and to clarify the most important ways we need to build solidarity right now.

Given the ongoing need for unity as we continue to work to get our friends out of jail, get all the charges dropped, and build the movement from within, seems like a good time to post this new and updated version.

Israeli GLBT Politics between Queerness and Homonationalism

Quote:
Debates about homonationalism seemed to be at the focal point of Pride 2010. International attention was lavished on two events in particular. In Germany, Judith Butler refused to accept the Berlin Pride Civil Courage Award, in protest of growing commercialism, complacency towards racism, and the exploitation of GLBT and queer people by war mongers. Across the ocean at Toronto Pride, activists tried and failed to censor the words “Israeli Apartheid” (and hence the group Queers Against Israeli Apartheid).

On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

http://toronto.mediacoop.ca/node/3883

Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.
Frederick Douglass, 1857

This page grows out of dialogue with many community members between the Vancouver Olympics in February and the Toronto G8/G20 in June. It needs saying.

Happy Pride Weekend, Torontonians!

Well, I'm really not in the mood to celebrate, and it hasn't felt like Pride week given the horrendous tragedy and trauma that Toronto experienced last week.

But.

It's fucking Pride weekend and I'm going to try to have fun.

I made a joke on Facebook, trying to put a positive spin, that the water cannon and sound cannons from last weekend could be altered to be more fun and festive-like for the Pride march. That's the best I can do.

Happy Pride everyone.

Cool

Canada-Israel Committee counters criticism of Israel with homophobic tweet

They removed it after they got complaints, but luckily, someone was on their toes and got a screen capture of a homophobic remark the Canada-Israel Committee posted about Libby Davies on Twitter.

Quote:

Davies' goofy views must be denounced - Province ed reminds Libby mouthy lesbians aren't wanted in #Gaza

What morons.  And who does the Canada-Israel claim to represent on Twitter?

The CIC is the official rep of the organized Jewish community on matters re Canada-Israel relations.

Changes in Ontario's sex education curriculum cause causes some britches to bunch

Are props due to McGuinty? I hate to do it, but this does sounds like a very positive move forward.

Quote:
Premier Dalton McGuinty is defending the province's new sex education curriculum against accusations from "family values" groups that it exposes young children to inappropriate material.

Dr. Charles McVety, president of Canada Christian College, said Ontario's revamped sex education curriculum will teach 11-year-olds about oral and anal sex and eight-year-olds about sexual orientation and identity.

City of Toronto threatens funding for Pride Toronto

As mentioned in this babble thread, Pride Toronto was considering a censorship policy to prohibit groups like Queers Against Israeli Apartheid from participating in the annual parade and dyke march.

Pride Toronto has since backed down due to community backlash, but a leaked letter now reveals that the policy emerged as a result of pressure from City Councillor Kyle Rae:

Quote:
Free speech is to be encouraged, but free speech of this nature is not in keeping with the expression of Pride. (link)
