Win! Company gives up plans for Mega Quarry

CTV reports:

"Acknowledging widespread public opposition, the company behind a proposed mega-quarry at a site north of Toronto has backed down. In a statement released Wednesday, the Highland Companies announced it was withdrawing its request to develop the project in Melancthon Township, near Orangeville, Ont. While we believe that the quarry would have brought significant economic benefit to Melancthon Township and served Ontario's well-documented need for aggregate, we acknowledge that the application does not have sufficient support from the community and government to justify proceeding with the approval process," Highland's John Scherer said."

Poppies and Politics

I know that it's traditional for MP's to wear a poppy to commemorate...but, are all the party leaders(INCLUDING THE NDP)requiring their mp's to wear the right-wing, militarist red poppy rather than the white peace poppy?

Harper's tax increase that, can be as much as 10% and targets unionized workers

Now you would think I am making this up because the media is not discussing it. I am not making it up. I will provide the links and information below since so you don't have to take my word for it:

The media is covering how many hidden things are in the budget but are missing this one:

22 changes in the budget bill fine print 457-page omnibus budget implementation bill amends 64 different Acts or regulations

But no mention of a tax increase there.

This tax increase is the decision to make extended group health contributions taxable by the employees as they never were before.

This is how it is today:

From the CRA Employer tax guide:

Bullet points for electoral coalition. If you support cooperation, do these speak for you?

A message to Canada's progressive leaders from ordinary progressive canadians.

We Propose, Given:

  1. The current Conservative Government holds power primarily due to “vote splitting;” a peculiarity of the current “first-past-the-post” electoral system.

  2. The core values of social justice, environmental sustainability and sound fiscal management are shared by Canada's three federalist progressive parties.

  3. The strong acrimony felt by many organizers in each progressive party for the other progressive parties is not shared by the majority of progressive voters.

Idea: Jobs for graduates

An idea occurred to me. I've posted it under "Labour" as it's the closest relevant category other than politics.

I was having a chat with a fellow former graduate student and we were talking about how academia often doesn't give students an opportunity to discover what they can do if they don't stay in academia. So we finish postgrad education and then end up at square one in the job market, anywhere from 25-40 years old having never really held down a full-time job.

I am now employed full-time, but a few things stood out to me during the months that I was making use of career counselling:

What if the black bloc have the right idea?

The more I see the failure of the left to change our society and the more I see the destruction caused by conservatives the more I really start to wonder when (and if) the left will ever take control.

At what point do we force our hand?

This is a serious post, despite lots of talk from the left, we arent effecting much change, sure we have official opposition but harper went from a minority to a majority.

Do we have to wait till feudalism sets in completely before we do something? Its doubtful we would have the brains or nerve to stand up even then.

Im not a member of the black bloc but increasingly my thinking is becoming more radical then theirs.

Georgia Straight alleges VANOC CEO John Furlong abused Aboriginal high school students

Earlier today, Vancouver free weekly The Georgia Straight published allegations that VANOC CEO, Chairperson of Own the Podium and Executive Chair of the Vancouver Whitecaps John Furlong (O.C., O.B.C.), misreported details in his recent autobiography Patriot Hearts of his original entry into Canada. Specifically, Furlong did not enter Canada in 1974, but in 1969 as an Oblate Frontier Apostle missionary.
