Newby..

I try to be interested in everything. (If you don't take an interest, it may come back to bite you in the ass!)

I'm currently wondering if Feminism, Unions, & the Left in general can survive the towering current of ignorance flowing through all aspects of our lives these days.

The near total lack of interesting thoughtful media really distresses me. The pandering of news media to the lowest common denominator & the change to 'Opinion Journalism' in the U.S. is frightening!

O.K.... In my day to day life, I spend a lot of time with my adult daughter, & my Mom. My hubby passed away 6 years ago this month. My Mom is handicapped & 96 years old.

Deal to extend Afghan mission without vote 3

I just spoke to someone in Pat Martin's office. There is no truth at all that Layton and the NDP's postion has changed in any way. The NDP is calling for the immediate and permanent removal of all Canadian combat forces from Afghanistan, full stop.

wikileaks - too good to be true?

Am I the only one wondering if there isn't something a bit fishy with this Wikileaks stuff? There is nothing, at least so far, really damaging to anyone, in the sense that it might spark a mass uprising and popular revolt against the US Hegemony - but there do seem to be a few things that are actually possibly going to help them, at least in terms of pushing "public opinion" in a direction they want it pushed - i.e. the Arab countries (apparently) against Iran???? my my, that certainly hinders the US attempt to vilify the country prior to some kind of attack.... and CSIS and others think Canadians are living in wonderland and need to get serious about 'terrorism' ??? Again - this is detrimental to US interests in what way?

The "Democracy" Issue

The failure of society’s ability to deal with the problems we face at the outset of the 21st century stems from the fact that the vested interests of an elite few have been allowed to thwart the will of the population at large.

Brave stand on Israel cost us UN Security Seat, says Harper

“As long as I am Prime Minister, whether it is at the UN or the Francophonie or anywhere else Canada will take a stand whatever the cost.”

Quote:
“Whether it is at the United Nation or any other international forum, the easy thing to do is simply to just get along and go along with this anti-Israeli rhetoric,” Harper told an interparliamentary conference on combating anti-Semitism....

Harper’s position was in a sharp contrast to blaming Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff last month for Canada losing out to Portugal for the UN position.

Ignatieff scoffed at Harper’s latest explanation.

B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell resigns

And here I thought being at babble made me grumpy tonight, but logging off to go listen to the esteemed Premier of BC blowing smoke up BCer's asses, took being grumpy to a whole new level.

Realizing that my taxes were paying for the smoke to be blown up my ass was the kick in the stomach, after the punch to the face.

Hopefully, more BCers realize  the lies and that we paid to be lied to too too.

There are polling questions at the link too.

Rage and Love

Even though I have been here only 20yrs, it does continue to amaze me how much the politics in Canada is so narrowly defined.  Why is it that politicans and political types are constantly advocating - Vote For Me...because I am not the other guy.  It seems like in this type of contest, there is no space for really the discussion of an alternate space or society.

Did Alejandra Bravo doom the Jonah Schein campaign?

Much grumbling in the Jonah Schein campaign for City Council about the role of Alejandra Bravo in the wake of his resounding defeat to Council embarrassment Cesar Palacio in Davenport North. The campaign was in thrall to Bravo, who came very close the last time around, losing to Palacio by less than 300 votes. She endorsed Schein early on and they believed she would be their secret weapon. There is no doubt that Bravo is a star. Very charismatic, talented, Latina, speaks Portugese, the dominant language of Davenport North. Schein, in contrast, is a unilingual anglo. They were obviously counting on Bravo to campaign hard for Schein, who she endorsed early on.

Voting Strategies for Mayor of Toronto

Here's a note I posted to Facebook that some babblers recommended I report here:

If you’re a Joe Pantalone supporter, you probably assume I’m a George Smitherman supporter because I have not been kind to pro-Pantalone arguments, . If you’re a Smitherman supporter, I imagine you think I’m supporting Pantalone because I keep trashing your arguments.

NDP 50th anniversary convention

Hello, all,

Has it been announced when and where the NDP will hold its 50th anniversary convention?

As a member of the International Committee for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), I would like to attend as an observer.

Thanks,

Buying Influence?

Toronto Media Coop has conducted part of an investigation into lobbyists who try to buy influence by donating to Toronto city councillor's election campaigns. Candidates in the current municipal election are not required to disclose their financial backers until March 2011, so the first part of the investigation looks at the current councillors and lobbyists who donated to them in the 2006 election. In April 2011, the second part of our investigation will be released.
