The Good News
We’ve raised $17,000 toward our “rabble-raisers” campaign target of $25,000. And momentum is building.

We’ve got enough to convince us to keep going for the month of November. Thanks to those who gave, and gave generously. We are especially encouraged by the increase in monthly donations we now receive.

The Bad News
We’re operating in November on grace alone. Without more donations from our readers and supporters — and without greater support from organizations and major donors — November will be our final month of operation. In which case there is a chance that none of us will be paid for the work we do through the month.

Already, you might have noticed less original work in the news section. This will only increase because, if we can’t assure writers payment, we don’t want to assign stories. Many of the writers who will appear through November are donating their work or deferring payment — with the understanding that payment might not come. They are willing to do this because they believe in rabble.

We hope you do, too.

Where We’re At
In November, we have one less staff person. As editor in chief, I have made a considerable donation to ensure that writers get paid for work we’ve already published. Others here are reducing their work hours — although I suspect they’ll be online for rabble as much as ever.

We believe in rabble.ca — and we know you do, too. We know because, since June, our statistics have only gone up. In June, we had just over 28,000 unique visitors. In the month of September, we had more than 45,000 unique visitors, 550,000 page views and more than 3.5-million hits.

October hasn’t quite ended, and we’ve already surpassed these numbers. So we know we must be doing something right.

… the columnists we feature, the events we highlight, the cartoonists we run, the links we make, the people who come here to share their thoughts, feelings, opinions and news.

You.

This is rabble.ca. It’s a keeper. But we’re not willing to let it limp along. We’re looking at how to cut more costs, but there isn’t really any fat. Without adequate funding, the doors close Friday, November 30, during a full moon.

rabble.ca will have a few fundraisers over the month. Let me know if you want to help. Already, contributing editor Lynn Coady is setting something fabulous up in Vancouver.

rabble.ca is sending out requests for donations through e-mail and by Canada Post. rabble.ca is negotiating an exciting partnership with oneworld.net and Alternatives. If we make it through this crisis, this new arrangement could deliver the first-ever progressive Internet news source that shares information from Quebec and the rest of Canada, presented in both English and French, with some articles from one source translated and posted to the other.

We also continue to follow up on promising grants and bridge funding. But prospects won’t keep us going after November.

The commitment of our readers will. Spread the word. rabble.ca is here, and it wants to stay.
