Show Notes:
On April 7 2010, the Grassy Narrows River Run occurred in Toronto. This 400 person march flowed through the streets - huge blue sheets gave the unpermitted march the appearance of a river. The indigenous Anishnabe led the march, carrying a banner with the words "clean Water = Our Survival" painted over a river and forest scene.
Mercury poisoning through pulp and mill operations, as well as clear-cut logging has had long lasting and devastating effects on the Indigenous of a vast region in northwestern Ontario.
The river flooded onto University Ave and rushed to Queens Park where speakers from a range of ally groups (No One is Illegal, CUPE, AW@L, Christian Peacemaker Teams, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Council of Canadians, and Earth Roots) joined Indigenous leaders who spoke of the impacts toxic water has on on their communities and culture, and of systemic abuses of Indigenous people by the colonial government of Canada.
This event was another clear sign of the rising tide of settler-indigenous solidarity which espoused a clear message that Indigenous rights must be respected and that water is a necessity for life, with an unmatchable value.
