The Wise Little Girl is a Russian folk tale that i've been fond of for quite some time. You can find it in Russian Fairy Tales collected by Aleksandr Afanas'ev (Pantheon Fairy Tales and Folklore Library; Pantheon Books, NY) and The Virago Book of Fairy Tales edited by Angela Carter (Virago Press, London, 1991).
