Living On Purpose

Episode #111 ~ Song of the Queen Bee

| March 24, 2008

Show Notes:

Since today is my father's birthday, it seems appropriate to offer this little ditty, since it was he who suggested, back in 2002, that I locate a copy of E.B.White's "Second Tree from the Corner", a collection of this author's writings. "Stuart Little" and "Charlotte's Web" are among E.B.'s well-known works.

Having completed two years of Toastmasters by then, I was ready for a public venue and had just discovered the local Errington coffeehouse on Vancouver Island, and began showing up as a performer and occasional MC for the first Saturday of each month. A singing workshop around that time freed my voice and landed me on stage 02/02/02, voice and microphone only, singing this song for the first time in public, after hours of exploration and practice at the seashore, with seals bobbing in the ocean as audience.

The recording here today was sung 'live' during a Living on Purpose broadcast on CHLY in 2006.

The inspiration for E.B.White to compose this poem, by the way, was a US Department of Agriculture bulletin on the artificial insemination of bees, that declared, "The breeding of the bee has always been handicapped by the fact that the Queen mates in the air with whatever drone she encounters".

Enjoy! And happy spring, hey the bees still thrive, thank the goodness!

(P.S. You may notice that this ditty was posted in a slightly longer version as Episode Twenty-One, oh well, that was 90 episodes ago!!)
