Dirk Becker refers to himself as a socio economic environmental political activist and ardent feminist, who is fascinated by ayurvedic neuro bio psychological predisposition and with birth order.
In this rich tapestry of conversation in the CHLY Radio Malaspina studio (July 2007) between Dirk Becker and Lynn Thompson, you will also learn that Dirk has only recently (in his mid-40’s) been making the connection between a diagnosis of A.D.D. and dyslexia with his life experiences. Dirk’s partner, Nicole Shaw is present in the studio with brief appearances during the conversation.
She produces and distributes a free publication since 2004 called “Synergy” ~ The Magazine Dedicated to Growth…Body, Mind & Spirit. Dirk has been engaged in environmental and political activism on Vancouver Island (in British Columbia, Canada) for about fifteen years with groups like NRE (Nanaimo Recycling Exchange), Eco-Wood, GSA (Georgia Strait Alliance), FOC (Friends of Clayoquot) and WCWC (Western Canada Wilderness Committee).
Dirk co-founded: NALT (Nanaimo Area Land Trust), Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition, Nanaimo Co-housing, Eco-Wood, Habitat for Humanity (in Nanaimo), Mid Island Co-op's Food Sustainability committee, and a C.S.A. (community shared and supported agriculture). He ran for city council and is currently working on this bio-region’s 5th farmers’ market.
In the last few years Dirk has focused a lot of attention on how our method of food production affects people, our air, water, soil, insects, animals and the earth in general. Dirk bought 2.5 acres of gravel land in Lantzville (north edge of Nanaimo) and began working with the land, making soil from scratch! Alongside the environmental aspect of Dirk’s passion, what has most profoundly affected his way of being is his increasing awareness of himself and his fellow human beings through numerous courses in: personal growth, counseling, justice institute, health and nutrition, and training in N.L.P. (Neuro-Linguistic Programming).
In addition, Dirk continues to integrate his experiences of: 12 very difficult school years resulting from a traditional German upbringing by his German military father, traveling to Asia, married to a first nations woman for 8 years, living in Texas, and a stint in his 20's looking for "the truth" as a born-again Christian.
