Samuel and Malith are former refugees who lived in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. They discuss life in a refugee camp in Kenya and how they feel about living in Canada. The two are organizers with World University Service of Canada (WUSC)'s Shine A light campaign, and talk about the urgency for girls to receive more opportunities and material support for education that will give them the seed of thinking and help their society learn ways to overcome oppression.

About the WUSC Shine a Light Campaign:

Education is a powerful tool and without it few of us would reach our full potential. In refugee camps very few girls have the opportunity to pursue their education beyond primary school and without education these young people have no way out.

The Shine a Light campaign aims to enhance what girls can achieve by helping them overcome the challenges they face in accessing education in the refugee camps. With the help of public donations, WUSC aims to provide these girls with the tools they need to learn, to strive, and to succeed.

For over 30 years, the WUSC Student Refugee Program has been providing opportunities for young refugees to pursue higher education in Canada. Among the students sponsored by WUSC, men greatly outnumber women because few girls finish high school. This is a situation this campaign is working to change.
