In Franz Kafka's 1919 short story, In the Penal Colony, a European explorer visits a South Seas penal colony and is introduced to an infernal machine of torture and punishment by its proud operator. Jerry Zaslove has metaphorically recreated the machine in his visual art installation, The Insurance Man: Kafka in the Penal Colony. Laura Lamb joins us with a review.
