BC Supreme Court victory for First Nations women

| September 24, 2007

Show Notes:

The Indian Act of 1876 removed the status of First Nations women who married non-Native men.

In 1985, the government of Canada made significant changes to the Act following a charter challenge, but still left 300,000 First Nations people disinherited.

Sharon McIvor challenged the 1985 revisions in BC Supreme Court and won. Now the BC government is planning to appeal - in a case she says they know they won't win.
