Since 1991, more than 2000 labour leaders have been killed in Colombia. Half of these deaths have been in the mining sector, an area of particular interest to Canadian companies.

Violence like this has prevented U.S. President Bush from getting his free trade pact with Colombia ratified by Congress. But it hasn't deterred the Conservative government in Ottawa from pushing ahead with a free trade agreement with Colombia.
