Counterfeit drugs in the global South

| April 24, 2007

Show Notes:

According to the World Health Organization, malaria kills more than one million people per year, mostly children living in Africa.

Malaria is treatable but a growing trade in fake medicines is preventing effective treatment and killing many infected patients.

We talk with Facundo Fernandez about his research into the detection of counterfeit anti-malaria drugs.

We also speak with Dora Akunyili, a pharmaceutical scientist and director-general of Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.
