A year ago, on February 1, King Gyanendra of Nepal took control of the country's airwaves and announced that he was dissolving the democratically elected government and assuming power in order to bring stability and end the decade-long civil war. Since then, the war has intensified and peace and democracy activists have been imprisoned. The King is holding elections on February 8 that only his candidates are running in. Mati Bernabei was in Nepal at the time of the coup and for several months after.
