Paying for the 2010 Olympics

| October 20, 2008

Show Notes:

The upcoming 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver was the focus of a Redeye special on October 18. From that show, we bring you a variety of different perspectives on the Olympics from security to housing to resistance.

Long before the IOC made the decision to hold the 2010 Winter Olympics in British Columbia, the City of Vancouver had to sign an agreement that they would assume 100% of the debt as a condition of bidding on the Games.

Meanwhile, half of all revenues generated by the event go directly to IOC coffers in Switzerland. Once the Games are over, host cities have no option but to raise taxes or cut services to cover the shortfall.

We speak with Michael Shapcott, founder of Bread Not Circuses and senior policy fellow with the Wellesley Institute.
