Public solutions to health care waitlists; update on Zapatistas

Despite claims that private clinics will deliver faster care at a better price, the research shows that for-profit care tends to cost more while providing inferior quality services. Dr. Michael Rachlis says that instead of going down this road, Canadians should choose public sector solutions, in particular, by establishing more specialized public short-stay surgical centres and by adopting modern methods of queue management from other sectors.

The Zapatista rebels of Mexico are emerging from their jungle hideout for a six-month campaign tour of the country, designed to be an alternative to this year's already contentious presidential race. The tour began on New Year's Day. Subcomandante Marcos, the Zapatista leader, has said he will build a nationalist leftist movement that will "shake this country up from below" during a visit to Mexico's 31 states. Chris Arsenault has visited Chiapas a number of times. He brings his assessment of what this new direction will mean for Mexican politics.
